What The Institutes is

The Institutes is an education and research organization for people who work in risk management and insurance. Its site sells the full ladder of a working insurance career: prelicensing study packages for the state producer exam, state-approved continuing education through its CEU brand, short online courses and certificate programs, masterclasses, and The Institutes Designations, the professional credentials led by the CPCU. The copyright line names the organization behind it as the American Institute For Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters.

The home page describes the mission as providing "educational support, resources and leading research to help those in risk management and insurance better serve the public", and says it works "on a global scale as the leading provider of education and research" through its affiliates. It backs that with three figures of its own: 100,000+ unique students served a year, 697,000+ people who have earned designations worldwide through The Institutes, and 182,000+ annual courses completed.

The entry is filed under professional continuing education because CEU is the part most licensed producers and adjusters will buy every renewal cycle, but the designation programs are the larger offer and are covered below.

CEU: continuing education for producers and adjusters

CEU is the continuing education arm. Its page says it "makes earning your CE easy, affordable, and accessible for producers and adjusters licensed in property and casualty or life and health insurance with more than 150 on-demand courses and live CE webinars with NO state reporting fees and NO hidden fees." It offers three ways to earn CE.

Individual courses. The on-demand catalog holds 150+ approved courses for P&C and L&H producers and adjusters, sold one at a time so a licensee can "buy only what you need, when you need it." The page lists them as approved in all 50 states and DC, available 24/7 on any device, and with unlimited exam retakes. The catalog is grouped by subject, and the menus show what sits inside each group:

  • Claims and coverage: Bodily Injury Claims, Exploring Homeowners Coverage, Liability Claims.
  • Commercial insurance: Essentials of Commercial Underwriting and Key Commercial Coverage Products.
  • Employee benefits: a course on guiding clients through the Affordable Care Act.
  • Ethics and compliance: Insurance Ethics Essentials.
  • Flood and disaster: Earthquake Insurance and Risk Management Essentials, NFIP flood insurance, and a course on terrorism and risk management.
  • Long term care and the Paul J. Winn Collection: eight-hour and four-hour LTC courses, LTC Partnership Plans, Principles of Wealth Management and Secure Act 2.0.
  • Reinsurance and financing, retirement and financial planning (annuities and life insurance in retirement and financial plans), risk management (including Managing Cyber Risk Through ERM and an Insurance Fraud course labeled CA Anti-Fraud Training), and analytics (Data Analytics & Claims).

The home page also promotes more than 20 new courses on trending topics and state requirements.

Live CE webinars. CEU runs live webinars "on timely insurance topics" that earn CE credit in real time, state-approved for producers and adjusters, with new webinars added weekly and no reporting fees. The webinar list is long and current: AI and emerging tech (AI fraud detection, ethics and algorithms, biometrics and privacy), auto (autonomous vehicles, gig drivers, electric and hybrid vehicles), climate and natural disasters, commercial lines (business interruption, D&O for small organizations, additional insured endorsements), coverage and claims (condo and HOA coverage, excess and umbrella gaps, canine bite claims), ethics, risk and strategy (captives, elder exploitation, builders risk), specialty insurance (cannabis, parametric insurance, FAIR plans) and workplace topics such as remote work and workplace violence.

CEU Unlimited. The subscription is the page's "Best Value": 12 months of full access to every on-demand course and every live webinar for $85 a year, covering P&C and L&H in all states, with no discount codes needed. It auto-renews annually and can be canceled any time.

On top of the formats, the page lists what CEU does around them. Course exams can be retaken as needed at no additional cost. CEU reports contact hours itself, under the heading "Fast, Reliable CE Credit Reporting", and pricing carries "No state reporting fees. No add-ons. No fine print." The courses and webinars are described as "designed to meet compliance standards across jurisdictions", including required topics such as NFIP and ethics. Learners are told to verify their state CE requirements before enrolling, the site keeps a State CE and License Information section and a My CE Licenses area, and purchased courses live on the "My Courses & Exams" page of the learner's profile.

Designations and the CPCU

The designations are The Institutes' core credential line. The CPCU is built from core courses (CPCU 500 through CPCU 550, on leadership, insurance operations, legal concepts, insurer financial performance, and data and technology), concentration courses in commercial or personal lines, electives drawn from other designations, an ethics course (Ethics 311) and a matriculation step. The site supports it with CPCU study groups and classes, a page on CPCU cross-credits, an ARM path to CPCU, a CPCU and MBA comparison, and The CPCU Society.

Around it sits a long list of associate designations grouped by field. Claims and underwriting includes the AIC, AIC-M, AU and AU-M, plus bonding, marine, personal insurance and surplus lines programs. Data and technology covers AI, information technology and data analytics (AIDA). Early career includes the AINS and AIO, risk management includes the ARM, the Associate in Cyber Risk Management (ACRM) and the Associate in National Flood Insurance, and there are management, finance and regulation, and reinsurance (ARe) tracks. New additions include the Associate in Insurance AI (AIAI), which the home page says teaches practical, insurance-specific AI skills "in as little as 6 months", the Associate in Catastrophe Risk and Resiliency, the Chartered Insurance Investment Manager and the Professional Employee Benefits Consultant. The PRC and PEBC are offered in collaboration with The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers.

Each designation has free sample courses, so a learner can try a course before buying. An exam resources section covers exam information, practice questions and question format, and an external waiver program lists advanced degrees and RMI professional waivers.

Masterclasses, short courses and prelicensing

For learners who want something shorter than a designation, the site sells masterclasses, online courses and certificate programs. Two masterclasses are featured with prices: Strategic Leadership in Insurance and Risk Management, built on real-world case studies, and AI and the Insurance Value Chain, marked CE approved, each at $79. Other masterclasses cover coaching and mentoring, communicating in a global marketplace, auto insurance in the era of AI and autonomy, high-exposure claims and consultative selling.

Online courses are grouped by role (agents and brokers, claims, risk management, underwriting) with Essentials and AI online course series, and the certificate programs include a Property Technical Certificate and Micro-Certs. Learning pathways are laid out by role, from early career and customer service to operations, data and technology, and workers compensation. A CourseFinder and a short quiz match a learner's role and goals to a course and designation. For people entering the field, Insurance Licensing Exam Prep sells prelicensing study packages for the state producer property and casualty licensing exam. A mobile app is listed among the student resources.

For teams and colleges

Employers have their own section. Develop My Team covers a corporate customer toolkit, custom education solutions, key person support, a team online course list, ordering for a team, leadership acceleration and free guides on onboarding and building a skills-based team, along with a 2026 Skills Report on in-demand skills among the learner base. For continuing education specifically, CEU Unlimited+ and CEU Corporate Solutions are offered to organizations that want CEU to deliver "a comprehensive CE solution" that keeps a team compliant. The site publishes no team prices.

College students get collegiate studies resources, professor resources, study materials, and a 2026 CPCU Designation Scholarship with rolling admissions. International resources include information for international students and a Middle East page.

Support

CEU support is by phone at (800) 295-9010, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, by fax, by email at info@ceu.com, and by mail to Malvern, PA. The Institutes itself lists separate contacts, with (800) 644-2101 for the U.S. and Canada and (610) 644-2100 from outside the U.S.

Who it suits

CEU suits licensed P&C and L&H producers and adjusters who renew every cycle and want a large state-approved catalog without reporting fees. A licensee who needs more than a couple of courses a cycle, or holds licenses in several lines, will find the $85 Unlimited plan simpler than buying course by course, while someone short a single credit can buy one course. The designations suit insurance and risk professionals building a career over years, from a new hire taking the AINS to an underwriter working toward the AU and the CPCU. Masterclasses suit managers who want a priced, single course. Insurance employers can run both CE and designations for staff. People outside insurance and risk management have nothing here: the whole catalog is built for that field.
