What Surgent CPE is
Surgent CPE is a continuing professional education provider for accountants and finance professionals: CPAs in public accounting, corporate finance staff, enrolled agents and tax preparers, and certified financial planners. It sells individual courses, unlimited subscriptions and certificate programs, and it runs a firm portal for accounting firms that need to keep a whole team compliant. The About page calls it "the accounting and finance industry's most comprehensive continuing professional education platform" and puts the numbers at 10,000+ CPE credits, 2,300+ live webinars per year, 150+ expert instructors and 500+ Speaker of the Year awards.
The company is older than most online CPE brands. The About page says it was founded in 1985 by Jack Surgent in Devon, Pa., took a majority investment from Spire Capital in 2013 to 2015, became part of KnowFully Learning Group in 2019 to 2020, and in 2026 was acquired by UWorld, which the page describes as a global leader in exam preparation. The site now carries the line "A UWorld Company" and says Surgent serves more than 100,000 professionals across all 50 states. Its contact address is in Dallas, Texas. Surgent's CPA exam review is a separate product; this entry covers the CPE side.
Credits and approvals
The accreditation list matters more than anything else for a CPE buyer, and Surgent prints it in full. It is registered with NASBA on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors and approved as a QAS Self-Study provider; it is an IRS-approved CE provider for enrolled agents and tax return preparers under Circular 230; it is an approved CE provider for the CFP Board; and it is approved by the California Tax Education Council (CTEC) for state-licensed preparers in California. The site says every course "is accepted for credit in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.", adding that state-specific requirements vary and linking to a state requirements lookup.
For enrolled agents and tax preparers, the About page mentions Annual Filing Season Program packages "with automatic IRS reporting built in".
The catalog and formats
The topic list covers tax, accounting and auditing, ethics, artificial intelligence, data analytics, financial planning, fraud and forensics, government and nonprofit, technology and practice management, plus Microsoft Excel, business and industry, personal development, and update courses. The About page names FASB and PCAOB standards among the subjects, and says corporate finance staff such as CFOs, controllers and comptrollers use it to keep up with FASB changes and internal controls.
Courses come in four formats: live webinars, on-demand webcasts, self-study text, and interactive courses. The home page says Surgent runs daily events for all time zones alongside 24/7 on-demand CPE. The upcoming webinars on the home page show the level: audits of 401(k) plans, an advanced version of the same topic, and a strategic review of changes under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
The interactive courses are gamified. The About page describes them as "Bite-sized, scenario-based courses" in which professionals earn CPE "while engaging with real-world simulations". The firms page explains the idea further: short, credit-earning courses built on scenarios that mirror real tax and audit challenges.
Speed on new rules is the claim Surgent leads with. The About page says it has "always been known as the first to market when tax legislation passes or auditing standards shift", that it had One Big Beautiful Bill Act courses ready "before most providers had even begun development", and that a "48-hour regulatory SOP" keeps it current. The home page currently promotes an expanded OBBBA CPE series.
Certificate programs
Beyond single courses, Surgent sells certificate programs in Agentic AI, Data Analytics, Fraud Fundamentals, Microsoft Excel, Not-for-Profit A&A, Tax Engagement Letters, Enrolled Agent CE and Yellow Book. The newest, the Agentic AI Certificate Series, is "A five-module, on-demand CPE program teaching practical AI skills for accounting, audit, tax and finance", with a Credly badge on completion.
Subscriptions and buying
Buying works several ways. Individual courses can be bought one at a time. Unlimited subscriptions come as Unlimited Webinars and Unlimited Self-Study, which the home page says give access to "thousands of CPE credits". Unlimited PLUS, marked "Best Deal", is described as the top subscription, "ideal for professionals who want unlimited flexibility and advanced resources". Packages such as AFSP and Audit Skills bundle credits for a purpose, and the home page pitches packages to anyone facing a CPE deadline. A free course lets a newcomer try the platform first. No subscription prices appear on these pages, though the home page's structured data states a price range of "$29 to $899".
For firms
The firms page is aimed at accounting firms and corporations. Its admin portal tracks and manages CPE hours for the whole firm, with automatic tracking, reminders and detailed compliance reporting against state and industry requirements. L&D managers can assign training and choose from webinars, self-study and gamified formats; firm partners get a program they can scale; staff get learning "you can fit around client deadlines and busy seasons". The page lists unlimited and bulk CPE options, a Weekly Expert Hour of industry updates, Flex Access and custom programs for seasonal, part-time and full-time staff, and a dedicated account manager with technical support. The About page says this works "from 5-person boutiques to 500-person firms". Pricing for firms comes through a demo or pricing request form, and two free whitepapers cover gamified CPE and the choice between bulk and unlimited plans.
Instructors
The instructors page says faculty bring Big-4, regional, local and industry experience, and that many have run their own practice or business. Examples include Robert Lickwar, a CPA with more than 30 years of practice in small-business taxation; Charles Blanton, director of government and nonprofit content, with over 25 years in auditing and industry including KPMG and the AICPA; Michael J. Tucker, J.D., CPA, VP of Tax and Advisory Content, who worked with KPMG Peat Marwick and Deloitte & Touche; and Denise Appleby, a retirement plans specialist with over 22 years in the field. The home page says instructors consistently earn 4.6+ star ratings. Subject-matter experts in assurance, tax, financial reporting, internal audit, consulting or financial planning can apply to join the faculty by email.
What customers say
The About and firms pages quote three CPAs, among them Richard, who says he has been a CPA for more than 30 years and praises the webinars. Jennifer: "We recently switched from a competitor specifically because you offer more than 'just the basics'." Edward: "I will take more Surgent courses based on this one."
Who it suits
Surgent CPE suits CPAs who need a full year of credits and want the choice of live, on-demand, self-study and gamified courses under one subscription, with NASBA registration and acceptance in every state. Enrolled agents, tax preparers and CFPs are covered by the IRS, CTEC and CFP Board approvals. Firms get the strongest case: a portal, compliance reporting, assignments and an account manager, at sizes from a small boutique to several hundred people. A professional who needs one specific course can buy it alone, and anyone unsure can start with the free course.
