What it is

Lawline is an online provider of continuing legal education (CLE) for attorneys, sold to individual lawyers and to law firms and legal teams. The home page sums up the offer in three lines: "2,000+ courses across every practice area and all 50 states", "Unlimited credits, one flat annual price", and "Instant certificates and automatic credit reporting." The About page traces the company back to its founding in 1999 as a TV program on which legal experts shared what they knew. It says that over the past 25 years Lawline has created over 14,000 programs and issued more than 8 million CLE credits, added over 1,000 new courses in 2024, and calls itself "the online leader in CLE."

The pitch goes past compliance. The site says its subject matter "transforms traditional Continuing Legal Education (CLE) compliance into practical knowledge", and the home page invites lawyers to "Come for your CLE, stay to advance your practice."

The course catalog

The catalog holds 2,000+ on-demand courses. The app page puts them in "over 50 categories across all credit types", and the courses page lets you filter by topic, difficulty level and format. Beyond the core credits, the site points to "hard-to-find areas and high-demand fields such as ethics, elimination of bias, wellness, AI, and developments in legal tech." Courses are grouped into Content Pillars, which the home page describes as foundational legal knowledge and practical insights for a working practice. The site also runs a DEI Institute and an AI Hub, and a podcast called Lawyers Who Learn.

Faculty numbers are given as 1,600+. The About page says faculty range across "In-house counsel, solo practitioners, government agencies, nonprofits, and Am Law 100 lawyers", and it introduces Amy Peck of Jackson Lewis P.C., Christopher E. Loh of Venable, Joey Jackson of Joey Jackson Law PLLC and Kathleen A. Scott of Norton Rose Fulbright. Practitioners who want to teach can apply through the site.

Taking a course

Courses are video or audio, watched in the browser or in the mobile app, which the site calls "Award Winning" and offers for iOS and Android. On the app you can:

  • download courses to your device and watch or listen offline;
  • follow slide presentations synced to any video or audio course;
  • add and save timestamped SmartNotes;
  • download course materials for later reference;
  • claim credit in the app and get the CLE credit and certificate by email straight away.

The Universal Credit Tracker records your progress for any state, "including credits earned outside of Lawline", so a lawyer can keep one record even if some hours came from elsewhere. The home page adds automatic credit reporting and promises certificates the moment you finish: "Receive credits right away (procrastinators, this is for you!)". Free tools sit around the courses: a CLE requirements guide, a deadline checker, a lawyer directory and a license lookup.

Two short testimonials on the app page show how lawyers use it. One user wrote that "the mobile app works perfectly. Earned 1.5 general credits today. Quick and easy." Stacy Stern described nearly filing for an extension as her deadline approached, and wrote, "Thanks to your App, I was able to easily complete the courses in time without stress."

Plans and prices for individuals

The individual product is Lawline Unlimited, sold as unlimited credits for one flat annual price. The app page advertises "1 Year of Unlimited CLE for Just $299!" Before paying, you can start a "no-risk free trial to experience Lawline Unlimited", and the courses page says the trial gives "instant access to Lawline's CLE courses for 10 days." The footer also lists Gift Lawline and a financial aid page.

Lawline for Teams

The Teams product is aimed at small firms and legal teams: "Unlimited CLE courses. Easy tracking. Simple team management." The FAQ says a Teams subscription carries every benefit of an individual Lawline Unlimited Plus subscription: the 2,000+ courses, instant certificates of completion, offline access in the app and the credit tracker.

Pricing is per user, per year, on the Teams pricing page:

  • 3-10 attorneys: $199 per user per year, shown against a crossed-out $299.
  • 11-30 attorneys: $189 per user per year, also against $299.
  • 31+ attorneys: custom pricing, with integrations, SSO, advanced reporting and dedicated support, through the enterprise option.

The page headline promises firms can "save up to $3,300 annually", and a calculator shows the saving for a given number of attorneys. All Teams memberships are annual contracts that renew automatically each year, and the Team admin counts as a user. Setup is simple: after purchase you add your attorneys, Lawline emails the invitations, and each attorney accepts and logs in. Users can be added or removed at any time, and attorneys who already hold individual subscriptions can be merged into the firm's account by customer support.

For firms with lawyers admitted in several places, the FAQ says the Teams catalog has "courses available in all mandatory jurisdictions", so each attorney can earn and track credit for every jurisdiction they hold. Some jurisdictions also allow self-apply credit, which widens the content that counts. On the organization side, the home page says Lawline's "fully integrated tools make program management a snap for administrators." The Teams page shows a SOC2 Certified badge and says Lawline is trusted by 200+ firms.

Size and support

The headline figures differ slightly between pages. The home page lists 160,000+ attorneys, 10M+ credits completed, 2,000+ expert-led courses and 1,600+ faculty; the About page gives 160,000+ members and 5.8M+ credits completed. The home page also points to reviews from over 1,600+ members on Trustpilot.

Support runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm ET, by chat, email and phone, and a help center and system requirements page sit in the footer.

Who it suits

Lawline fits an attorney who wants to clear CLE on their own schedule, on a phone during a commute or at a desk, and who likes knowing the whole year's credits are covered by one price. Lawyers admitted in more than one state get the most from the Universal Credit Tracker and the jurisdiction coverage. Small and mid-sized firms can put everyone on one annual Teams contract at a per-user price published up front, and larger legal departments can ask for the enterprise tier with SSO and reporting.

It is built around on-demand courses rather than scheduled classes. The catalog's range, from ethics and bias to AI and legal tech, suits lawyers who use CLE to learn something new as well as to stay licensed.
