What it is
JN CPE is an online self-study continuing education provider for accountants. Its home page headline is "Online CPE for CPAs, IRS Enrolled Agents and Accounting Professionals," and the About section says the company "has been providing self-study, interactive online CPE for CPAs since 1994 to CPAs, Enrolled Agents, CMAs and professional accountants." For a learner, it is a catalog of text and video courses with online exams, bought one at a time, in bundles, or through an unlimited yearly subscription. The copyright line names JN Productions CPE Courses, and the footer credits the video production to JN Productions.
The pitch on the home page is short: "Save time… Save money… Your self-study CPE solution!"
Acceptance and approvals
The approval statements are what a CPA or an Enrolled Agent checks first, and the home page puts them up front. "We are NASBA QAS sponsors and our courses are accepted in all 50 states." The About section adds: "Our courses are accepted nationwide for CPE and by the IRS for CE credit. Therefore, you can rest assured that your hours will be accepted."
For Enrolled Agents and ERPAs, the site says "JN CPE is an approved IRS CE Provider" and "we report your hours directly to the IRS." It also carries the "2-hr required Tax Preparer Ethics course," included in the tax bundle, and tax courses "are available online or with optional printed workbooks." CMAs are named as a third audience, with qualifying courses alongside the CPA catalog.
The catalog
The home page claims "Over 1,000 CPE hours to choose from in accounting, auditing, tax, ethics, management services, and more," and says courses run "from Basic to Advanced difficulty and from 2 to 35 hours of Credit." The catalog page sorts the courses into categories, the largest being Accounting (67), Taxes (66), Ethics (28), Finance (25) and Auditing (24), with smaller ones for Artificial Intelligence (AI) (11), Information Technology (12), Governmental, Fraud, Business Law, Economics, Communications & Marketing, and a Video category (14).
A few examples show the range and the pricing model, with each course priced on its own:
- Crypto Asset Accounting and Reporting, 1 hour, $12
- Corporate Taxation, 2 hours, $24
- Ethics for Accountants, 4 hours, $39
- Fair Value Accounting, 5.5 hours, $69
- AI Essentials for CPAs, 8 hours, $70
- Revenue Standard ASC 606: Implementation & Guidance for Private Entities, 8 hours, $70
- Defensive Divorce: Divorce Tax Issues, 15.5 hours, $114
- Corporate Tax Planning, 21 hours, $137
- Complete Guide to Estate & Gift Taxation, 35.5 hours, $178
Short courses come in at $12 and the long tax references cost the most, so the price tracks the credit hours. The AI category holds a set of 1-hour AI Series courses on audit and compliance, tax preparation and research, data analysis and ethics, and the newest courses include Big Beautiful Bill: Summary of Selected Tax Provisions (4 hours) and Tax Implications of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (32 hours), both covering the same recent tax law at different depths.
Ethics
Ethics gets its own section. The home page says learners can "Choose from qualifying state-specific, AICPA, and general ethics courses accepted in most states," and the menu links a State Ethics CPE Requirements page. The catalog lists state courses for Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington, most at 4 hours for $39. For CPAs in states without a state-specific requirement, CPA Ethics: General Standards and Acts Discreditable "fulfills a 1-hour ethics requirement in states that do not require a state-specific course," and CPA Ethics: Integrity, Objectivity, and Independence is a 2-hour regulatory ethics course for the same group.
How a course works
The process is laid out under How Does it Work. A learner can "Purchase online or call 800-479-5636," and then "Begin taking courses immediately or save for later with 1-year access. Exams are graded instantly, with certificates available immediately for printing. Additionally, they are saved in your account for future access."
Text courses use "an online pdf textbook format," and "printed book options are available." The site says "Our video course library is growing!" and the catalog marks the video titles, such as Behavioral Finance, the 3-part Better Budgeting series, Business Loan Basics and Marginal Profitability Analysis, which includes Excel templates. Online testing and grading cost nothing extra: "As a result, you will never have unexpected charges." Learners can also "Utilize our online texts, even print them out, for tax and accounting research."
Subscriptions, bundles and discounts
The MEGA CPE Special gives "unlimited online access to over 1,000 hours of CPE credits for one full year," with "Every non-ethics course in our catalog" included and all resource materials available to review or print while the subscription is active. The price is "$229/yr.", or "$199/yr." for "the Mega CPE Subscription option with automatic renewal." The site's own note on timing is practical: since a purchase lasts a year, "you can use the MEGA Special for this year AND next year’s CPE requirement."
The bundles group courses by field:
- Accounting and Auditing CPE Bundle, $169. The home page says "Eighteen courses" and "178 hours of CPE," while the catalog entry describes "A Total of 20 courses, 184 CPE hours."
- Unlimited Tax Preparer Bundle, $179 a year for "Unlimited online access to all tax courses for one full year, as well as the 2-hr. Ethics for Tax Professionals course."
- Financial Reporting CPE Bundle, $159 for "nine courses and 57.5 hrs. of credit."
- Video CPE Bundle, $149. The home page gives "37.5 hrs (11 courses)," and the catalog entry describes "A Total of 12 courses, 40 hours of Finance & Management CPE."
- 1040 Workshop Bundle, $144 for the practical side of 1040 return preparation and individual planning.
Firms get a break too: "Quantity and group discounts are available, so order with your office associates for extra savings." Newsletter subscribers are promised "course updates and money-saving coupons," and "New subscribers receive a 10% Welcome Discount!" The footer links the site's Terms and Conditions and Return Policy.
Who it suits
JN CPE suits CPAs, Enrolled Agents and CMAs who want to meet their requirements on their own schedule from text or video, with an instant certificate after each exam. The MEGA subscription makes most sense for a CPA who needs a full year of hours and likes to pick from a wide catalog, while a tax preparer who mainly needs IRS CE and the required ethics course can buy the tax bundle instead. Individual courses at $12 to $39 cover a single gap, such as a state ethics course before a deadline.
The limits are part of the format. Everything is self-study by design, so a learner who wants a live instructor will not find one here, and ethics courses sit outside the MEGA subscription, so a CPA budgeting for a renewal year should add the state ethics course on top.
