What AMBOSS is

AMBOSS is a German-language medical knowledge and exam-preparation platform for medical students, nursing trainees, physician assistants and practicing doctors and nurses. Its home page sums it up as "Medizin auf den Punkt gebracht" (medicine, straight to the point) and describes the product as a digital companion for practicing, learning and teaching, built "Von Mediziner:innen für Mediziner:innen" (by physicians for physicians). One product does two jobs: it is a study platform for exams such as the written and oral medical state exams (M2 and M3) and the nursing final exam, and it is a reference clinicians consult on the ward. That overlap is the point. The chapters a student learns for the exam are the same chapters they later look up when making therapy decisions.

The company's own figures are large. The home page says 95% of all students learn with AMBOSS and that every fourth physician trusts it, and the cancellation page puts it at more than 125,000 physicians and 95% of all students. The home page also states that 26% of therapy decisions are adjusted after a search in AMBOSS. These are AMBOSS's own claims, published without a method.

The knowledge library

At the core sits the chapter library. The chapter overview describes "über 1.400 Kapitel" (over 1,400 chapters) with over 50,000 indexed technical terms, over 250,000 cross-links and thousands of multimedia items. It covers the entire preclinical and clinical knowledge of medical school, plus current, guideline-based know-how for treatment decisions, and the page stresses that the chapters are connected across specialties. For a student, that means a gap spotted while revising one topic can be followed into the chapter that fills it. The footer also points to a drug database (Arzneimitteldatenbank), a quality assurance page and the company's AI principles.

Access works across devices. The mobile apps for reading and for question practice ("Wissen- und Kreuzen-Apps") have an offline function, which the home page pitches for hospital corridors without reception. A browser version serves the library desk or the ward computer, and a Chrome extension adds short definitions of medical terms on other websites, linked directly to AMBOSS chapters. The menu lists ANKI, AMBOSS Audio and a USMLE product among further products, alongside an AMBOSS podcast and two newsletters: the Leitlinien-Telegramm on clinical guidelines and the Kongress-Telegramm on congresses.

Exam preparation for medical students

The M2 and M3 page calls AMBOSS "Deine No. 1 in der Examensvorbereitung" (your number one in exam preparation) and says the program accompanies over 95% of all exam candidates successfully through the written M2 exam every year. Two study plans and a case bank carry this.

  • The 100-day study plan for M2. Built with the Medi-Learn team specifically for AMBOSS, it gives a set of topics for each day. The learner reads them in AMBOSS and then works original IMPP questions from all subjects, so every subject keeps coming back over the whole plan.
  • The M3 study plan. For the oral-practical exam, it covers central topics in internal medicine, surgery and other exam subjects and builds in the most important practical skills. It includes tips on writing doctor's letters and presenting cases, practical advice for exam day, and a flexible planning template that adapts to the learner's subject combination and leaves room for planned breaks.
  • AMBOSS cases for M3. Over 50 clinical case examples from internal medicine, surgery and other exam-relevant areas, in an open question-and-answer format. The learner follows a patient from presentation to therapy and trains differential diagnosis, with multimedia features such as interactive auscultation and scrollable CTs, and every keyword links back into the library.

The student menu goes further: preclinical study and the Physikum, model degree programs, clinical clerkships and the practical year (Famulatur & PJ), dentistry (Zahnmedizin) and physician assistants each have a section, with an AI Mode for learning alongside them. One medical student's testimonial on the home page reads "Ich hätte das Studium nicht ohne geschafft." (I would not have made it through my degree without it.)

Nursing: a free state exam study plan

Nursing trainees get their own track. The headline resource is a free study plan for the state final exam in nursing (staatliche Abschlussprüfung Pflege). It is a key-topics guide rather than a day-by-day schedule: it lists every exam-relevant topic, includes complete AMBOSS nursing chapters, and also names chapters where only certain sections matter, with the instruction to focus strictly on those sections. Learners are asked to prioritize first, working out how much study time they have, what they already know well and which topics need extra time, and then to fit the plan to their available time and knowledge.

The FAQ says the plan was written by the AMBOSS nursing team, made up of qualified nurses, and follows the federal framework curriculum (bundeseinheitlicher Rahmenlehrplan). It is candid about the limits: the nursing exam is not set centrally, so what is tested depends on the responsible authority, and AMBOSS cannot predict the questions. The plan itself is free on sign-up through a form, but it links into AMBOSS chapters, and reading those needs an AMBOSS account. Whole classes or cohorts that want to learn with AMBOSS can ask for a group discount, which the FAQ confirms exists. Beyond the exam, the nursing menu lists specialist further training (Fachweiterbildung), study plans for nursing training, CE courses and AI Mode for nurses.

Continuing education and institutions

AMBOSS also runs online continuing education (Fortbildungen) for physicians and for nurses, including mandatory training (Pflichtfortbildungen), radiation protection courses (Strahlenschutzkurse) and Fachkunde courses. For doctors, the menu adds preparation for the medical language and knowledge exams (Fachsprach- & Kenntnisprüfung) and for the specialist board exam (Fachärztliche Prüfung), which keeps the platform in use after graduation. Practices, clinics and universities are addressed separately, with clinic and practice licenses, separate terms for institutions and mandatory nursing training for employers. On its partner page, AMBOSS says it works with renowned medical societies, professional associations and product and media partners.

Plans and access

The site has separate pricing pages for physicians, medical students, nurses, a clinic license and a practice license. Every page carries a "Kostenfrei testen" (try for free) button, and the nursing FAQ says that after registering with AMBOSS free of charge you choose your plan (Tarif). Membership runs as a subscription: the cancellation page says a canceled subscription ends at the next possible date and that questions go to the help center, and the footer links to pages for ending and for withdrawing from a subscription. The site comes in German, Polish and Portuguese, with English versions for the US and for international users.

Who it suits

AMBOSS suits German-speaking medical students most directly, from the Physikum through M2 and M3, and especially those who want one tool that combines a structured plan, original IMPP questions and a reference library they will keep using as junior doctors. Nursing trainees preparing for the state final exam get a free, nurse-written topic guide that tells them where to focus, with the full chapters behind a paid account. Practicing physicians and nurses who want fast, guideline-based answers on the ward, plus mandatory and specialist CE, are the third group, and clinics and practices can license it for their teams.

The limits follow from the focus. The study plans are built around German exams and the German nursing curriculum, so a learner preparing for exams elsewhere would lean on the general library or the separate USMLE product instead. And while the nursing plan is free, the chapters it points to are not, so the real cost of preparing with AMBOSS is the subscription.
