What it is
Virtual College is an online training provider whose catalog centers on the mandatory and compliance subjects that UK workplaces deal with: safeguarding, food hygiene, health and safety and business compliance, alongside personal development and leadership and management. It sells to two readers at once. Individuals can buy a single course or take a free one and download a certificate, and organizations can put staff through training with a business subscription or buy courses in volume. The free courses page says there are over 300 online accredited courses available, that the business subscription opens over 200 of them, and that UK businesses trust its CPD Approved training to develop their teams. The site footer reads "Virtual College by Netex", and bespoke training solutions are offered under the Netex name.
What a user actually gets
The course categories listed on the site are business compliance, charities and not-for-profit, education, food hygiene, healthcare, health and safety, leadership and management, personal and professional development, safeguarding, social housing and social care. A banner across the site says the CPD approved safeguarding courses have been updated to include changes to KCSIE and WTSC 2026 legislation, which matters to schools and social care employers that must keep that training current.
The paid courses listed under "Our most popular courses" on the free courses page show the range of length and price:
- Level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene for Catering, CPD Certified and RoSPA Assured, 2-3 hours, £16.00 + VAT
- Level 3 Food Safety and Hygiene for Supervisors, RoSPA Assured and CPD Certified, 8-9 hours, £89.00 + VAT
- Safeguarding Children Level 3, CPD Certified, 2-3 hours, £40.00 + VAT
- Food Allergy Awareness and Level 2 Food Hygiene Training Package, 3-4 hours, £28.00 + VAT, down from £32.00
- Level 2 Safeguarding Children, CPD Certified, 1-2 hours, £35.00 + VAT
- How to Carry out Portable Appliance Testing, RoSPA Assured and CPD Certified, 30-45 minutes, £31.00 + VAT
Each course is labeled with the marks it carries, so a buyer can see before paying which ones are CPD Certified and which are also RoSPA Assured. The site's search suggestions also point to COSHH and cyber security courses on the business compliance side.
The free catalog is unusually deep in safeguarding. It includes Female Genital Mutilation: Recognising and Preventing FGM, Awareness of Forced Marriage, Learning from Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews (written for everyone who comes into contact with children, on responding to neglect, abuse and extra-familial harm), Protecting Children from Child Sexual Exploitation, a Level 1 course on Child Criminal Exploitation and County Lines, Understanding Young Minds on teenage self-harm, a Fire Prevention and Safeguarding course for people who work with those at increased risk of fire at home, and Understanding Animal Welfare in Violent Homes for professionals working with families with pets. The course descriptions put the subjects in context: the forced marriage course cites an estimate of approximately 8,000 to 10,000 forced marriages of British citizens every year, and the county lines course notes that around 27,000 children in England have been identified as involved in county lines activity. On the health side there is Prepared to Save a Life, which the page says takes less than an hour in five short 10 minute sections, and Get Moving, Get Healthy on physical activity and diet. The free courses come with a downloadable certificate, and the page pitches them for a CV, a promotion case or a first look at a new career.
The learning is self-paced on Virtual College's own LMS. The company says it wanted a platform that "made e-learning as simple as possible to access and as engaging and memorable as possible to help it stick." Learners can open it whenever they have time and pause when they need to stop, which the page sums up as fitting learning around life "with no deadlines or pressure." Reviews on the page mention videos, interactive content and links to supplementary sources.
Buying for a team
For organizations, the business subscription is priced per person: in the page's words, "one price per person gets as many team members as you need an unlimited access pass to over 200 courses." The per-person subscription price is not shown alongside that offer, so a team starts from the subscription options page and a conversation with the company. Many courses also carry volume discounts when bought for larger teams or projects. The site's company menu lists onboarding and customer success, help and support, accreditations and frameworks, and its contact block gives a phone number and an email address. For training that does not exist in the catalog, the solutions menu points to bespoke training from Netex, and a podcasts and audio learning section sits beside the courses.
Virtual College also runs an affiliate program through Awin, paying 10% commission on approved sales from new customers and 5% on sales from existing customers, with a 30-day referral period. That matters mainly to training consultants and websites that recommend courses to their own audiences.
What learners say
The free courses page shows a rating of 4.8 out of 5 from 16,473 reviews, with recent verified reviews underneath. One reviewer found it "So easy to book online & you can start your course straight away." Another writes: "Been using VC for a number of years. Easy access and process through the detailed course. Excellent service." A third says the content was "thorough, but not overwhelming, with plenty of links to supplementary sources of information." Others praised "clear helpful videos and well explained questions", and one reviewer adds that the certificates "are accredited and recognised by more than one body", which is a learner's view rather than a claim the page makes for every course.
Who it suits and who it does not
Virtual College suits UK employers in sectors where safeguarding, food hygiene and health and safety training is a routine obligation: schools, social care and housing providers, charities, caterers and hospitality businesses. A manager can buy a £16 food hygiene course for one new starter or move the whole team onto a subscription, and the free safeguarding courses let staff build awareness of specific risks such as county lines or forced marriage at no cost. Individual learners get a low-risk way to add CPD-certified courses to a CV.
The limits are those of a UK compliance catalog. The courses track UK legislation and guidance, so organizations elsewhere will find less of it relevant. The courses on the popular list run between 30 minutes and a few hours, which suits awareness and refresher training better than in-depth study, and the subscription price per person has to be requested before a team can compare it with buying courses one at a time.
