Respondus

Respondus is an assessment software company whose products sit alongside a school's learning system rather than replacing it. Its own tagline is "Assessment Tools for Learning Systems", and the About page says it "develops assessment applications for the education, training and certification markets." The buyers are institutions: universities, K-12 districts, assessment vendors and other education companies, which the site names as the partners it has worked with for over 20 years. A teacher or a student usually meets Respondus because their institution, or a platform their institution uses, has already licensed it. The About page says David, the founder, started the company in 2000.

The product family

The site organizes the products into two groups. The first is about exam integrity. LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor are the two names here, and the home page says that "Each year hundreds of millions of exams use LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor to ensure academic integrity at educational institutions." For a testing office this is the reason the company is listed among proctoring tools, and the tagline frames both products as additions to the learning system a school already runs rather than a separate exam platform.

The second group is about writing assessments. Respondus 4 and StudyMate Campus are, in the home page's words, "used to create exam questions, self-assessments and learning games across thousands of universities and school districts." This is the part of the catalog that serves a quiz or assessment buyer: the same company that secures the exam also sells the tools faculty use to write the questions, self-assessments and learning games that come before it.

The menus show how the line-up changes with the customer. The higher education menu lists LockDown Browser, Respondus Monitor, Respondus 4, StudyMate Campus and the Test Bank Network. The K-12 menu lists LockDown Browser, StudyMate Campus and Respondus 4.0, without Respondus Monitor or the Test Bank Network. A school district and a university therefore start from different sets of products, and only the higher education list includes Respondus Monitor.

Partnerships and the SDK

A large part of Respondus's reach does not come through its own products. The home page says "You'll also find Respondus technology embedded in 70+ third-party assessment platforms, ranging from homework systems to certification testing." The partnership section of the site splits this into SDK Licensing, Technology Partners and Publishing Partners, and the home page carries a block of Learning System Partners. In practice a student may meet Respondus technology inside a homework system or a certification test run by another company.

The team section of the About page backs this up. One team member manages technical integrations with partner companies, which the page lists as educational publishers and LMS vendors. For an assessment vendor that wants exam integrity or question authoring inside its own product, the SDK route is the relevant door, and it is presented as a separate line of business with its own menu.

Scale, ownership and track record

The company's figures are about volume and longevity rather than features. The About page says that each year "hundreds of millions of assessments are created, delivered, proctored, or analyzed using Respondus technology." The investors section, which opens with a joke ("Tricked you."), says Respondus has no outside investors, is debt free and is 100% employee owned. It credits that independence for "customer renewal rates topping 95% each year and more than two decades of uninterrupted growth and profitability."

The company also describes its giving. Respondus employees have given millions of dollars to charities over the past decade, the page says, "with the majority going to educational initiatives for minority and disadvantaged students." The About page adds that the company does not use this for marketing, which is why it appears only there.

The About page describes the team as "a mix of education veterans, technology entrepreneurs, and customer-obsessed wonks." The founder spent nine years at an EdTech startup before starting Respondus, the COO has worked with him for over 25 years, and one designer is responsible for everything Respondus users see on screen.

Support, training and pricing

Support is where the About page is most specific. It describes a 24/7 technical support team and mentions live chat alongside customer support. A product specialist runs webinars and customer trainings that the page says are viewed by thousands of people each month, and the site has its own Webinars section, a Support and Resources area and a Student Help page in the footer. The Giving Back section says the company's customer support and training teams "go the extra mile to ensure your success."

The site publishes no prices for any product. What it does say about cost is a value statement: the company points to "low pricing that allows even the most budget-strapped schools to use our tools and services." An institution starts that conversation through the Contact page.

What a customer says

The About page closes with a quote from Steve Kaufman, Senior Instructional Designer at the University of Akron. He describes his job as helping faculty give students "a fair, secure, and consistent experience", one "where the technology fades into the background and their excellent content can shine through", and adds that "Respondus helps us to do just that." The point he makes is the one the product family is built around: faculty write the content, and the Respondus tools try to stay out of the way while the exam runs.

Who it suits

Respondus suits institutions that already run a learning system and want to add exam integrity and question authoring without changing platforms: a university testing office that needs LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor across many courses, a K-12 district that wants LockDown Browser and StudyMate Campus for its teachers, or an assessment or publishing company that wants Respondus technology inside its own product through the SDK. The 24/7 support team, the training webinars and the student help pages make it a reasonable choice for an institution whose faculty and students are not specialists.

It is not a course platform. There is no catalog of courses to sell or take, and an independent creator looking for a place to build and sell lessons will find nothing here. The site is also brief about the products themselves: the home and About pages name each product and its purpose, and a buyer comparing proctoring options will want to go through each product's own page, a webinar or the sales team before choosing.
