Proctorio is an online proctoring and assessment security platform from Proctorio Inc. Its homepage says that "Since 2013, organizations worldwide have trusted Proctorio to protect millions of assessments," and puts the total at 300M+ exams proctored globally. Proctorio serves higher education institutions, K-12 schools, and professional sectors including workforce verification, government hiring and licensing assessments, and credentialing organizations. The platform delivers a complete approach to authenticity verification, combining layers of proctoring, identity verification, and AI-powered integrity tools designed to protect online assessments at scale.
Core Platform Architecture
Proctorio is built around three solution pillars: Integrity, Origin, and Vault. The Integrity pillar ensures authenticity by verifying identities, securing testing environments, and providing proctored session monitoring. Secure Proctoring delivers assessment monitoring, and Secure Interviews enable video-based assessments. The Origin pillar verifies that assignments and projects were completed by humans rather than AI, using Behavior Tracker for human activity validation and AuthorProof for authentic writing validation. The Vault pillar keeps assessment content secure by preventing exposure, tracking leaks, and providing remediation tools. WebSweep provides content leak management, and ScreenBlock prevents screenshots and videos.
The Proctorio Shield icon appears in the browser toolbar, changing color to reflect the current status of the Secure Exam Proctor extension. Light gray indicates the extension is inactive and not connected to Proctorio. Dark gray shows the extension is active and connected. Blue indicates an active chat with a Proctorio Support agent. Green shows the test-taker is in an active exam attempt and being monitored. Orange indicates Proctorio is experiencing connectivity issues or the extension needs updating. Red signals an error or temporarily restricted account.
Extension and Browser Integration
On a desktop or laptop, every test-taker and exam administrator needs the Secure Exam Proctor extension, installed from getproctorio.com in a Chromium-based browser: Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave or Opera. Administrators need it to create, edit and review exams as well, and the help center warns that editing a Proctorio exam in an unsupported browser such as Firefox or Safari can cause configuration problems that stop test-takers from getting in. On a phone or tablet, test-takers use the Proctorio Mobile App instead. The extension switches itself on when a Proctorio-enabled exam opens in the LMS or assessment platform and off when the test-taker exits, and some exams also require Incognito access to be enabled. If a school-managed browser profile blocks the install, the help center suggests switching to a personal profile or asking the institution's IT team.
The Proctorio extension requires specific permissions that are limited to exam sessions. The permission "Read and change all your data on all websites" allows Proctorio to detect and launch Proctorio-enabled exams within a learning management system or assessment platform, and to record open tabs or sites visited during the exam (only if recording options are enabled by the exam administrator). Proctorio does not alter data and only records website activity during an active exam attempt.
The "Display notifications" permission enables Proctorio to display instructional and warning notifications during exams. "Modify data you copy and paste" allows Proctorio to clear clipboard contents when copy and paste are prohibited. "Capture content of your screen" allows Proctorio to record screens during exams if enabled, though the extension cannot initiate recording automatically and users must manually grant permission before each attempt.
"Manage your downloads" allows Proctorio to restrict downloads during exams when prohibited by administrators. "Identify and eject storage devices" allows Proctorio to view system information like available memory and operating system version to confirm devices meet Proctorio's minimum requirements. This information may be used by Proctorio Support to troubleshoot hardware issues, but Proctorio will never eject a storage device. "Manage your apps, extensions, and themes" allows Proctorio to view and temporarily disable additional browser extensions during exams if prohibited, without modifying browser themes or uninstalling extensions. "Change your privacy-related settings" allows Proctorio to provide chat support, requiring third-party cookies to be enabled, but Proctorio cannot change browser privacy settings automatically.
Accessibility and Design
Proctorio explicitly commits to not disabling approved assistive technology extensions or apps, including ReadSpeaker, Read The Web, JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver. The company emphasizes accessibility built into every test-taker experience and publishes accessibility commitments alongside compliance certifications. The help center also answers common privacy questions directly: Proctorio "never accesses personal information or files stored on your device," the extension can only record the sites visited during an active exam attempt rather than browser history, and test-takers may remove the extension as soon as they submit their exam.
Configuration and Flexibility
The platform offers a comprehensive menu of proctoring capabilities that institutions select based on their needs. The homepage lists the settings by name. Lockdown options include Block Downloads, Block New Tabs, Clear Cache, Close Existing Tabs, Disable Clipboard, Disable Extensions, Disable Printing, Disable Right Click, Force Full Screen, Prevent Incognito and In-Quiz Links Only. Detection options include Advanced Hardware Detected, Advanced Program Detected and Advanced VM Detected. Recording options cover Record Audio, Record Video, Record Web Traffic and Record Desk, with a desk scan at the start or periodically. Exams can also offer a standard, scientific or graphing calculator, a whiteboard, screen readers, mobile access and multiple monitors, and can add a Live Proctor.
Further options cover breaks and reentry (Allow Breaks, Allow Reentry, Allow Reentry With Agent, Reentry Blocked) and verification (Verify ID, Verify Signature, Verify Audio, Verify Desk, Verify Video). The granularity of these settings enables institutions to calibrate proctoring intensity to exam stakes.
Human-Centered AI and Purpose-Built Technology
Proctorio emphasizes that its AI helps identify patterns and potential concerns, making reviews faster and more efficient. Unlike general-purpose AI, Proctorio develops technology specifically designed for authenticity verification and learning integrity. Institutions retain control over how AI is used, receiving configurable tools and insights while every decision stays with the institution. The platform is designed for complex and evolving educational environments where questions about academic integrity, AI-assisted work, and authenticity require nuanced, institution-specific responses.
Industries and Educational Sectors
The platform serves K-12 schools supporting secure, flexible testing environments; higher education protecting academic integrity at scale; workforce sectors verifying candidate authenticity remotely; and credentialing bodies ensuring credential value and fairness. Workforce, government and credentialing are grouped under ProctorioPro, the company's professional assessment line, while K-12 and higher education sit under its education solutions. The government offering covers secure hiring and licensing assessments.
Support and Trust
Help comes through several routes. Institutions can contact sales or sign up directly, and live chat support is available, in the homepage's words, "24/7, 365 days a year." Test-takers get a device checker, a requirements page and a help center organized around creating, taking, reviewing and preparing for exams, including live exams. The site links compliance certifications, a Trust Center, a Service Level Agreement, an Acceptable Use Policy, privacy and accessibility pages, integration and developer documentation, and a monthly webinar on upcoming features; the most recent one introduced new Live ID features for "Real-time identity confirmation for every session."
The company holds that "When authenticity can be verified, remote education, digital credentialing, and distributed hiring can scale with confidence."
Who it suits and who it does not
Proctorio serves institutions requiring sophisticated, configurable proctoring solutions that balance security with user experience. Higher education institutions managing high-stakes exams benefit from the range of options and AI-assisted review capabilities. K-12 schools appreciate the flexible configurations supporting varied test types and student needs. Organizations conducting workforce verification and hiring assessments value the Origin pillar's AI detection capabilities. Credentialing bodies managing professional licensing and certification exams rely on the comprehensive approach to authenticity and identity verification. Institutions with diverse assessment needs (from low-stakes quizzes to high-stakes licensing exams) benefit from the ability to apply different configurations to different exam types. Organizations seeking to balance security with student experience and accessibility commitments find alignment with Proctorio's stated design philosophy.
The main practical caveat is the browser. On a computer, Proctorio runs only in Chromium-based browsers with its extension installed, so test-takers who use Firefox or Safari will need to switch for the exam, and students on locked-down school or work browser profiles may need IT help or a personal profile before exam day.
