ADInstruments makes data acquisition software and hardware for life science researchers and educators, and Lt is its teaching platform. The home page calls Lt "the only cloud-based learning platform for data acquisition": students record physiological signals with USB-based PowerLab Sensors, and the recordings go straight into Lt for real-time work. Around that recording sits the course side a lab class needs, which the company sums up as "900+ interactive and customizable lessons, intuitive authoring, and student grading and learning analytics to streamline your teaching inside and outside the lab."

The education pitch is active learning with real data. "Engage your science students in active learning with our integrated teaching solutions," the home page says, offering content, data acquisition and data analysis tools to learners "whether in class or online." This entry is about Lt and the education products around it; the company's research line, built on PowerLab hardware and LabChart software, is the background it grew from.

The company behind it

According to the home page, ADInstruments was founded by Michael and Tony Macknight on November 25, 1986, and is counting down to its 40th birthday. It reports 10,000+ organizations served worldwide, 100 of the top 100 universities served and 50,000+ citations in peer-reviewed journals, and it names itself a strategic partner of the American Physiological Society. Those figures describe the whole company, research customers included, rather than Lt alone. The site is available in English, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese.

Lessons and content collections

Lt's lessons are organized into content collections. The education menu lists anatomy, animal physiology, biology, exercise physiology, human physiology, neuroscience, nursing, pharmacology, preclinical medicine, psychophysiology and veterinary physiology, and the footer adds a medical and pre-med collection. A supplementary course resource called Understand Your Physiology sits alongside them.

The lessons are described as interactive and customizable, so instructors can adapt what the library offers rather than take it as fixed. Lt also includes its own authoring, which the company calls intuitive, for writing new lessons. Together that gives a department two routes into the platform: adopt a ready-made collection for a course, or build its own practicals and keep them in the same place as the published ones.

Recording real data

The hardware is what separates Lt from a general course platform. PowerLab Sensors, which ADInstruments introduces as "the next generation of educational hardware, designed with teaching at the forefront," record biosignals directly in Lt or in Lt LabStation. The site offers them in sensor bundles, an Advanced Human Physiology Sensor Bundle and a Core Human Physiology Sensor Bundle, and in hardware kits such as the Animal Physiology Kit II, the Education Psychophysiology Kit II, the Exercise Breathing Kit II, the Reflex Kit II and a range of nerve and muscle kits. Vernier Go Direct Biology Sensors also appear in the education hardware menu, and the PowerLab unit itself is listed for advanced data acquisition.

The research menus show the range of signals the PowerLab family covers, from ECG, EEG, EMG and EOG to force, GSR and NIBP. The home page describes what students capture in Lt as "authentic real-time physiological signal recording."

Grading, analytics and three software options

Lt includes student grading and learning analytics, which the company presents as part of streamlining teaching inside and outside the lab. Combined with the lessons and the recording tools, that puts the practical, the data and the marking in one platform.

ADInstruments offers three education software products, and the footer labels them clearly. Lt is the in-lab and online software. Lt LabStation is the lab-only software for places without a dependable connection; the home page says it lets instructors "teach effectively with PowerLab Sensors in an offline lab environment," and it has its own content line in the support menu. LabChart for Education is the research-level software, for courses where students should learn on the same analysis tool researchers use.

Partners, case studies and resources

The education menu names Bio-Rad, Massey University, TolTech and Vernier as education partners. Lt customer case studies cover Otago Polytechnic and the University of Sydney (both listed under ANZ), the University of Colorado (USA) and the University of the West of Scotland (EU). The site also profiles a group it calls Science Heroes, researchers at institutions including King's College London, Northeastern University, the University of Auckland and the University of Pretoria.

For teaching staff, the company runs an Lt Resource Hub, a blog, and events and webinars. It also offers a free ebook, Education 4.0: Science Teaching in the AI Era, on modernizing undergraduate science and health education while keeping authentic, hands-on learning at the center. Visitors can sign up for ADI Updates, a newsletter of research and education news, innovations and offers, or send a question straight from the home page.

Support

The support menu is long. It lists an Ask Support Assistant tool, a support article library, a video library, technical support, training and workshops, events and webinars, a software downloads library and product documentation. Education product support is split into Lt, Lt Student Support, Lt LabStation, PowerLab and hardware, Lt Sampling, Lt LabStation Content and LabChart Experiments, so students have a help section of their own. The home page adds that the company's support team will work with customers to identify best practices for experiments, advise on technical specifications and design a laboratory setup.

Buying

Purchasing runs through quotes. The site carries a quote request basket, and the contact menu offers Request a Quote, General Inquiry and Technical Support. The footer links terms of use, privacy, accessibility, GDPR, software license, safety and intended use, and warranty pages.

Who it suits

Lt suits university and college departments teaching physiology and the health sciences that want students to record and analyze their own biosignals as part of coursework, with nursing, exercise physiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, veterinary and pre-med programs all covered by named collections. A department that already owns PowerLab hardware gets a teaching layer on top of it, and one starting fresh can buy sensors, kits and lessons from a single supplier. LabStation covers labs where the network cannot be relied on.

The caveat is scope. Lt is a specialist platform for practical life science teaching built around ADInstruments hardware, not a campus LMS for every subject, so an institution would run it alongside the system it uses for the rest of its courses.
