Canvas is the learning management system made by Instructure, an education technology company whose About page calls it "The makers of Canvas, Mastery, and Parchment (solutions for learning, assessment, and credentialing)." Canvas serves three kinds of buyer: K-12 schools and districts, colleges and universities, and businesses and government agencies training staff, members or customers. The Canvas page describes it as "The world's most-loved LMS" and, on the products page, "North America's most-loved learning management system"; those are the company's own words. The site gives offices in Salt Lake City, Utah (North America), London (Europe) and Quezon City in the Philippines (Asia Pacific). This entry covers Canvas, with Instructure's other products as context.
Teaching in Canvas
The Canvas page groups the teacher's tools as "Simple educator workflows". SpeedGrader lets a teacher "Grade student submissions, leave comments, and annotate documents, all in one place." Message Students Who lets teachers "Connect with students based on instructor-defined criteria", so a teacher can reach, say, every student who has not submitted an assignment. The Gradebook is described as "More than just marks": educators enter marks, manage assignments, adjust weightings and choose how the data is viewed and organized.
For administrators there are two headline tools. Blueprint courses let an institution "Scale engaging curriculum across your school, district, or institution, and push course updates with a single click", which is how a district keeps one centrally designed course in sync across many sections. Customizable feature settings create "secure and managed teaching and learning spaces" that reflect "your institution's branding, hierarchy, and roles."
For data, Canvas Data gives "raw, event-level data files" for custom dashboards, advanced queries and an institution's data warehouse, and in-app reporting shows course activity, student progress and engagement trends without leaving Canvas.
Free mobile apps
Canvas has three free mobile apps. The Student app lets learners view grades and course content, submit assignments, use to-do lists and calendars, send and receive messages, post to discussions, watch videos and take quizzes. The Teacher app includes a mobile SpeedGrader, announcements, messages, discussions, and the ability to change due dates, publish assignments and edit course content. The Parent app, for schools, lets parents view assignment descriptions and due dates and course announcements, set reminders for assignments, and see grades for assignments and courses. The Canvas page counts "27M mobile app downloads".
Tiers, scale and languages
The Canvas page says Canvas comes in three tiers, ranging from core LMS capabilities to expanded engagement tools and AI features. The site does not name the tiers or give their prices; buyers are sent to a "Get Canvas" request or a demo.
The same page gives the platform's scale: "10s of millions of users", a peak of "6 million concurrent users", "99.9% uptime", availability "in 100+ countries" and 33 languages. The home page adds "8000+ customers" in over 100 countries. The site's location selector offers English versions for North America, Asia-Pacific and the United Kingdom, plus Spanish, Italian, Dutch, German, Portuguese, Japanese and Korean versions.
The page also lists "Our non-negotiables": "a strong commitment to accessibility standards and inclusive design", community-powered development through "regular feedback loops with a global community of educators and technologists", and integration. On that last point it says Canvas is "Built in the cloud on open technology" and "integrates with 1000+ external tools, giving educators the freedom to compose their ideal teaching and learning environments." A marketplace of what it calls "1000+ Canvas partners and integrations" sits behind that.
Canvas for business and government
The business page presents Canvas Career and the Canvas LMS for learning and development. Canvas Career is "For skills-based, non-degree, and professional learning", and the products page calls it "The IgniteAI-powered LMS that connects learning to real-world skills and outcomes." It offers role-based, skills-aligned learning paths, content creation accelerated with IgniteAI, and dashboards that track skills progress and ROI in real time. The page says Canvas scales from "a team of 50" to "an association of 50,000", and that it supports both in-person and remote learning.
Three add-ons are described there. Canvas Studio lets a team "create, share, and comment on videos", with in-line commenting. Canvas Catalog lets an organization "Organize, manage, and market all of your courses in one place", track "registrations, revenue, and enrollment trends with built-in reporting", "Tailor course pages with rich content editing, CSS, and JavaScript", and run "a scalable, localized storefront", which is how Canvas serves customer and member education. Parchment Digital Badges award "digital badges and certificates" for structured learning journeys.
For live sessions the business page names Zoom ("Zoom meetings in any Canvas course, module, or calendar"), Webex, GoToMeeting and Adobe Connect, under the heading "One login. Hundreds of tools and apps." The case studies it links include LA County DPH and New Energy New York's Battery Academy.
Assessment and the rest of the ecosystem
Assessment is mainly Mastery's job. Mastery Connect is described as "Standards-aligned assessments" that "Inform and improve teaching and learning with high-quality assessments and actionable insights", with Mastery Assessments and a Mastery Item Bank. The home page cites Hamilton County Schools in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which "increased student achievement and became the fastest-improving district in the state" using Mastery. Within Canvas itself, quizzes and SpeedGrader cover classroom assessment. Parchment handles records and "Secure, verified credentials". Platform enhancements include LearnPlatform, Impact, Intelligent Insights and IgniteAI, which the products page says "brings powerful AI tools into the flow of teaching and learning." The menu also links to Canvas Network, which its own site titles "Free Online Courses for Educators", with classes taught by experts around the world.
The company behind it
The About page's timeline says Instructure was founded in 2008, launched Canvas in 2011, opened offices in London, Sydney and São Paulo in 2014, and acquired Mastery in 2019, the year it "reached (and quickly exceeded) 30 million users." In 2024 Parchment joined, and "KKR acquired said fam shortly afterward." The Instructure Community reached 2M members in 2023, and the About page calls it "the world's largest online community of educators." Customer quotes on the home page come from Fairfield County Schools, Champlain College, the Braille Institute, the University of Cincinnati and Seminole State College of Florida.
Who it suits
Canvas suits a school district that wants Blueprint courses pushed to many classrooms, a parent app and Mastery assessments from the same company; a university that wants SpeedGrader, Canvas Data and a large integration marketplace; and an organization of 50 to 50,000 learners running staff, member or customer training through Canvas Career and Catalog. A solo creator selling one course would be buying far more institution than needed, and anyone wanting to compare tier prices online will have to request them.
