D2L Brightspace
Tap a star to rate
D2L Brightspace is a learning management system made by D2L Corporation, which its homepage describes as the "Creators of the Brightspace LMS Software". The product page calls Brightspace "the LMS built to focus on the learning moment, bringing artificial intelligence, learning science, and human ingenuity together to improve learner achievement." It is sold to institutions and organizations rather than to individual instructors: universities and colleges, K-12 districts, companies training staff, associations educating members, training organizations selling programs, and government agencies. The company says it has "over 25 years behind us", and the product page states that "Brightspace Is Trusted by 1,400+ Customers Globally."
The homepage sums up the pitch as "Stop stitching tools together. Brightspace keeps course design, assessments, analytics and AI all in one place, so intelligence shows up where the work is already happening."
What the core LMS covers
The Brightspace page groups the platform into four capabilities. Under "Create and Deliver Content With Ease", it promises learning experiences that are "more interactive, engaging and accessible." Under "Personalized Education at Scale", it describes experiences "that adapt to each learner's performance." Under "Track and Improve With Data and Analytics", it offers trend analysis and "actionable insights", and "Achieve More With Intuitive Tools" covers the everyday workflow.
D2L's own blog adds detail on these. Its Brightspace profile lists adaptive learning paths that "respond to each learner's performance in real time, automatically adjusting difficulty and sequencing", and a mobile app, Brightspace Pulse, with access on iOS and Android "including offline, so learners can keep going on the train, on the plant floor, or out in the field." It describes content as "born-accessible", with "WCAG 2.2 conformance at release", and the site footer links to an Accessibility Conformance page. The same post says Brightspace includes native competency-based education frameworks, stackable credentials and Credly badging.
The add-ons
Much of Brightspace's depth sits in named add-ons, which the FAQ calls "optional add-ons for you to further enhance the learning experience." The product page lists them:
- D2L Lumi (AI-enabled learning): "powerful AI-driven assistance, while keeping full control." D2L's blog says Lumi offers generative AI "for content creation, practice questions and personalization, with educators directing every interaction", and that "No customer data is used to train the LLM."
- D2L Creator+ (course authoring): interactive course content to raise engagement and completion. The blog says it lets instructional teams build no-code interactive content inside the LMS "with deep H5P support and mastery-aligned rubrics."
- D2L Achievement+ (outcomes-based education): a dashboard for reporting on learning outcomes against an institution's goals. The blog says it "maps learning activities directly to competency frameworks."
- D2L Performance+ (learning insights): course and learner data for faster decisions. The blog pairs it with Intelligent Agents for "predictive analytics paired with automated intervention."
- D2L Course Merchant (e-commerce): lets anyone "discover, browse, purchase and self-enroll in course offerings through your own branded storefront."
- D2L Link (integrations): faster connections between Brightspace and other systems.
The site menu also lists D2L Accessibility+, which the blog says extends "auto-remediation and accessibility-check workflows."
AI in Brightspace
AI is the lead message on the homepage: "Artificial Intelligence should never be applied to learning as an afterthought. It should be intentionally designed from the ground up." Lumi is the AI that is "embedded in our Brightspace platform", and the site has an AI Hub explaining how and why D2L built it that way and the research behind it. The homepage frames the intent as "Great AI doesn't replace instructors. It gives them room to teach, not more to manage." The blog says Lumi was recognized at the 2026 AI Excellence Awards, and the homepage links to the Artificial Intelligence Excellence Award.
Integrations and standards
The FAQ answers the SIS question directly. Brightspace "integrates with a number of third-party tools and platforms, including learning management platforms, data tools and content providers of all types." D2L describes itself as "currently leading the industry with 1EdTech Global certifications and being the first commercial LMS certified for Learning Tools Interoperability." Beyond standards it offers "full-featured and customizable batch data processing, real-time APIs, and even no-code integration recipes through D2L Link."
For corporate buyers, D2L's blog names HRIS and CRM connections through open APIs and D2L Link: "Salesforce, Workday, ADP, BambooHR, Dayforce and Microsoft Dynamics 365", with services support for non-standard builds.
Migration, services and support
On moving from another LMS, the FAQ says "Our bulk migration tools allow you to transfer hundreds" of courses, up to hundreds of thousands, "in a single batch", and that the process "can run efficiently behind the scenes at night, requiring no manual effort", with support from D2L's change management experts.
Services are a large part of the offer. The menu lists Onboard Brightspace, Optimize Brightspace, Transform Brightspace, Customer Success and Change Management Consulting. The product page says organizations choose D2L "for our award-winning and personalized approach to customer success, professional services and proactive support", covering "platform migration, course design to tailored service and everything in between." Training for staff is available through D2L Academy, and the Teaching and Learning Studio offers podcasts and free masterclasses.
By sector
Higher education. The page promises to "Simplify course creation, foster engagement and track progress", and the homepage adds boosting enrollments, raising engagement and completion rates, and reporting. Use cases include content modernization, faculty burnout and streamlined workflows. A testimonial from Harold Watkins of Western Michigan University says the school used Data Hub in Brightspace "to make sure students are meeting the outcomes they need to graduate."
K-12. "Equip teachers with intuitive tools and analytics to create engaging, personalized learning experiences that support every student's success." The homepage mentions district-wide insights, content creation tools with integrated professional development for teachers, and use cases for reducing teacher workload and early intervention.
Business. Programs for employee onboarding, sales and product enablement, leadership development, role-based training, and upskilling and reskilling.
Associations and training organizations. Continuing education and continuous professional development, member engagement and retention, and non-dues revenue through "e-commerce workflows for an integrated storefront experience", which is Course Merchant. That storefront is also how a company could sell or deliver courses to customers outside its own staff.
Government. "Safe, Secure and Scalable Online Learning" for regulatory and security requirements; the homepage says the platform "partners with Carahsoft."
Results D2L reports
The product page gives three figures without stating the method: an "82% retention rate with CBE programs" (competency-based education), a "300% Increase in certificates of completion issued" and a "30% increase in course enrollments". D2L's blog puts its customer count at "more than 1,500 customers globally", higher than the product page's 1,400+, and cites (ISC)² reaching "2x course enrollment and 4x course completion with satisfaction scores between 92-99%" and Energy Safety Canada training "over 100,000 workers on the platform." It also points to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology migrating "over 34,000 learners" to Brightspace.
Pricing
D2L publishes no prices. Its blog states that "Pricing requires consultation and is customized based on organization size, use case and feature needs", and every page routes buyers to "Request a Demo" or Contact Sales.
Who it fits
Brightspace fits a university, college or school district that wants one LMS with mobile access, accessibility built into authoring, standards-based integration with its SIS, and a vendor that runs migration and change management. Companies, associations and training providers get the same platform plus a storefront for selling courses and HRIS connections. Because add-ons carry much of the AI, authoring and analytics, buyers should be clear which of them are in their quote. A solo instructor or small creator selling a single course is not the customer this product is built for.
