Harvard Business School Online is the online learning arm of Harvard Business School, selling certificate courses and credential programs in business to working professionals and to organizations. The About page explains that it "launched as HBX in 2014" to deepen the school's impact and broaden its reach, rebranded to Harvard Business School Online in 2019, and has since "educated 290,000-plus learners from more than 175 countries." Its first two programs were Core Business Essentials, formerly called CORe, and Disruptive Strategy, and from 2015 CORe became the program Harvard Business School offers incoming MBA students to prepare for the classroom. The site lists the school's address at Soldiers Field in Boston. HBS Online describes the result as "an online business education like no other."

How the courses are taught

The learning model is, in the About page's words, "active, social, and case-based": learners "immerse yourself in real-world challenges facing seasoned business leaders and discuss and debate solutions with peers from around the world." Each program features business experts from companies around the globe, and learners work through the real, complex situations those experts faced, collaborating with peers and making decisions "using the same limited, imperfect information." The site adds that "HBS Online courses are taught by Harvard Business School faculty" and that all of its programs are taught fully online.

Courses come in two formats. On-demand courses can be started at any time, while cohort courses run on fixed dates; Dynamic Teaming, for example, starts on November 18, 2026, with payment due two days before. Each course card shows the total hours and the expected weekly or per-module load.

Subjects and individual courses

The catalog covers eight subject areas: Business Essentials, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Leadership & Management, Strategy, Business in Society, Finance & Accounting, Marketing, and Digital Transformation & AI. Most individual courses cost $1,949. Featured examples include Data Science and AI for Decision Making and Transforming Customer Experiences (20-25 hours each), Strategic Financial Analysis (40-45 hours at 5-6 hours a week), Entrepreneurial Marketing (16-20 hours), Creating Brand Value (23-40 hours), and AI Essentials for Business (16-24 hours). Leadership courses run longer: Leadership Principles takes 35-40 hours, Strategy Execution 40-45 hours and Organizational Leadership 45-50 hours. The shortest option is Sprint: Building AI Skills, an on-demand course of 4-5 hours for $489, in which learners leave with "an AI Action Plan, configured AI workspace, HBS-exclusive Prompt Pack" and practice on a realistic business scenario.

Credentials build up in steps. Any single course earns a Certificate of Completion. Completing any three courses within a subject area earns a Certificate of Specialization, which the strategy page describes as a way to "signify your deep expertise in Strategy," and the site calls this route a Learning Track.

Core Business Essentials

Core Business Essentials is the foundational multi-course program. It combines three courses, Business Analytics, Business Strategy and Financial Accounting, with a Negotiation, Trust, and Ethics module and a capstone. It runs for 17 weeks at 5-8 hours a week and costs $2,799, and the home page notes "Save $1,800+ when you enroll in the 3-course bundle." Learners come away with what the site calls fluency "in the language of business."

CLIMB

The Credential of Leadership, Impact, and Management in Business (CLIMB) is the flagship. It takes 1 year at 5-9 hours per module and costs $15,000, paid in four installments of $3,750. Learners choose a New Leaders or an Experienced Leaders path; New Leaders have zero to three years of managerial experience and two-plus years of total professional experience. The program combines 5 pre-set courses, 2 electives and a capstone project. On the published syllabus, those courses include Dynamic Teaming, led by CLIMB Faculty Chair Amy Edmondson, Leadership Principles with its 360° feedback assessment, Personal Branding, Business Strategy, and a new course, Human and Agentic AI Teams, on leading teams that include AI agents. One elective must come from Finance & Accounting and the other can be any certificate course in the portfolio.

Cohorts starting in September 2026 get two live sessions, a topical business discussion in Term 2 and group leadership coaching in Term 3, plus a complimentary Harvard Business Review Executive subscription in Term 4 that the page values at $700. CLIMB learners also get exclusive programming at Connext, the annual in-person conference. The next cohorts start on January 13, 2027, with applications due by December 31, 2026. The page states that prices are in US dollars and do not include applicable international taxes.

Community and outcomes

Learners join a community that extends past the course. The first Connext conference in 2016 brought participants to the HBS campus "for a day of networking, learning, and inspiration," and in 2018 a community launched so online learners could "connect offline in more than 30 regions around the world," with chapter organizers in places such as Shanghai. The site says learners can collaborate with professionals from 190 countries.

On outcomes, the About page cites "a recent survey of past participants conducted by City Square Associates," in which "94 percent of learners said HBS Online is more impactful than other online business programs, while three out of four said HBS Online is worth the investment." Course pages add their own figures, including that 92% of learners developed increased confidence after completing their course and an "11 x return on investment, with 24% of HBS Online learners reporting an average $20,466 salary increase." These are the school's reported survey results, not guarantees.

For organizations

HBS Online sells to employers under For Organizations, offering "shared learning and group discounts for teams of five or more." Organizations can also point employees at CLIMB, and the CLIMB FAQ covers employer reimbursement.

Who it suits

HBS Online suits a professional who wants Harvard Business School teaching and a certificate without leaving a job: an engineer or analyst who needs the business basics of Core Business Essentials, a manager building a Certificate of Specialization in strategy or leadership, or a new or experienced leader ready for a year of CLIMB. Prices are published, so a learner can plan from a $489 sprint up to a $15,000 credential.

The caveats are the commitment and the format. A standard course takes dozens of hours, the case method asks for reading and discussion rather than passive video, and the cohort courses and CLIMB run on fixed start dates. A learner who wants a degree should note that these are certificates and a credential, not an MBA.
