Emeritus is an online education company that builds and runs programs in collaboration with universities and business schools, for individual professionals and for companies. In its own words, Emeritus "collaborates with more than 80 top-tier universities to make high-quality education accessible and affordable worldwide," across the United States, Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, India and China, and its "short courses, degree programs, professional certificates, and senior executive programs help individuals learn new skills and transform their lives, companies and organizations." The home page counts 500K learners globally, 80+ universities worldwide and 700+ programs. Its contact page lists addresses in Singapore, Boston and China, and the site links to regional arms for Latin America, Brazil, China, France and India.

What an individual learner can take

The program catalog is organized by level. Senior Executive Programs are aimed at the C-suite: examples on the home page include Columbia Business School Executive Education's Chief Financial Officer Program (9 to 12 months, blended), the INSEAD Chief Strategy Officer program (10 to 12 months, blended) and Wharton Executive Education's Global C-Suite Program (9 to 12 months, online). Emerging Executive Programs prepare people for those roles, such as Wharton's Emerging CFO and Emerging COO programs (6 months each, online) and Imperial Executive Education's Emerging CTO program (8 months).

Below that sit Certificate Programs, which are shorter skill courses: Wharton's Executive Presence and Influence runs 6 weeks, MIT xPRO's Designing and Building AI Products and Services 10 weeks, and a Harvard Medical School Executive Education course on designing a sustainable nutrition plan 8 weeks. Professional Certificates are longer and aimed at a new career: MIT xPRO's Professional Certificate in Cybersecurity runs 24 weeks, and UC Berkeley Executive Education's Professional Certificate in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and Kellogg's Professional Certificate in AI-Enabled Product Management run 6 months each. Learning Journeys, such as Harvard Medical School's 18-week AI-Driven Health Care Transformation, sit between the two.

Other partners named on the home page include Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science (Deep Learning for AI, 10 weeks), National University of Singapore Business School Executive Education (AI For Senior Executives, 5 months), Cambridge Judge Business School Executive Education, MIT Sloan and ISB Online, whose Applied Business Analytics runs 14 weeks. Each program card shows a duration, a format (online or blended) and a start date, and most offer a downloadable brochure.

The catalog by topic shows where the depth is. Leadership has 101 programs, AI and Machine Learning 75, Business Management 75, Finance 52, Healthcare 42, Technology 34, Data Science and Analytics 31 and Digital Transformation 30, with smaller lines in strategy, marketing, product design, project management, human resources, business analytics, sustainability, supply chain, entrepreneurship, coding and cybersecurity.

How the learning works

The home page summarizes the approach under "The Emeritus Impact." Courses are designed around specific learning outcomes "to boost career growth," and the programs help learners build skills "they can apply immediately to their jobs." It reports that "Nine out of ten Emeritus learners reported a positive impact on their careers" and that "Instructor-led courses and cohort-based learning experiences provide one of the highest completion rates in the edtech industry, ie, over 80%," citing the Emeritus Impact Survey, 2023. The About page describes a model that combines technology, curriculum innovation and "hands-on instruction from senior faculty, mentors, and coaches," and says Emeritus has "educated more than 350,000 individuals across 80+ countries."

For open enrollment programs, the enterprise page explains who teaches and who certifies. Short Certificate Programs carry "Content by university faculty" with a "Digital certificate awarded directly by the university." Career Enhancement Programs are "Bootcamps and diplomas co-delivered by Emeritus and university faculty. For working professionals." Senior Executive Programs are "Designed for CxO and C-1 leaders," and are "University faculty-delivered with live immersion and coaching."

Before enrolling, learners can join program information sessions, watch a course preview, or browse a library of microlearning videos, split into free and premium, on topics from business management and leadership to coding and supply chain.

For companies

The enterprise page reports 2,000+ enterprise clients across 40+ industries, 85+ university partners, 500K+ leaders developed across 80+ countries, a 92% program completion rate in enterprise cohorts and a network of 1,400+ global thought leaders. Companies can buy in three ways. Open enrollment gives employees access to "800+ programs from 85+ world-class universities," either as group enrollments in a public cohort or as private cohorts made up only of the company's own staff, with content adapted to the industry if needed. Ready-to-deploy journeys come under Emeritus EDGE, whose "Learning elements are packaged, priced and ready to deploy," in three types: AI Readiness Journeys, Leadership & Manager Effectiveness Journeys, and Functional Excellence Journeys for sales, marketing, finance, operations and HR. Bespoke learning journeys come in three formats: masterclasses, functional journeys built as multi-module academies, and leadership pipeline programs.

The method runs in four steps: Diagnose, Architect, Deploy and Measure, with "dedicated program management and real-time cohort analytics" and dashboards that link learning to outcomes. Programs draw on university faculty, 360 degree assessments, business simulations, coaching, and on-campus, on-site and global immersions. The case studies give a sense of scale: a 6-week program with Northwestern Kellogg for 70+ directors and senior directors at a technology services company, 18-week journeys across Columbia, MIT and Cambridge Judge for 80 managers, 40 leaders and 12 country heads at a beverage company, and a 6-month program for 23 leaders at an insurance group. The industries served include technology, government, healthcare and life sciences, consumer goods, financial services and energy.

Prices and support

The pages show no program prices; a Financing page is linked from the site. Program questions go to an info address, enrolled learners have a separate program support address, and companies have an enterprise sales address. The contact page says Emeritus attempts "to respond to queries in 24 hours or less," with up to 72 hours over weekends and holidays.

Who it suits

Emeritus suits a mid-career or senior professional who wants a credential from a named university without leaving a job: a finance director heading for a CFO role, a manager moving into AI product work, or a technologist aiming at a CTO seat. The range from 6-week certificates to 12-month C-suite programs lets a learner match the commitment to the goal. For an enterprise L&D team, it offers university-backed content at scale, with packaged journeys for speed and bespoke programs for larger transformations.

The caveat for individuals is that cost and fit have to be checked program by program, since each university's program has its own length, format and start date. For companies, the bespoke route depends on a diagnostic and design phase with the Emeritus team before anything runs.
