The Open College
Tap a star to rate
The Open College is an Irish distance learning college that sells QQI-accredited online courses to adults, mostly at Levels 5 and 6 of Ireland's National Framework of Qualifications. Its pages describe it as "Ireland's largest provider of QQI Accredited Online Distance Learning Courses" and say it has "successfully educated and awarded in excess of 44,500 students with QQI qualifications". According to its About page, the college "was established in 2004 and was one of the first Private Colleges in 2008 to be fully recognised, approved and accredited" by FETAC, then the national awarding body, and received a second approval for accredited eLearning in 2012 when awards moved to QQI. Its reader is a working adult in Ireland who wants a recognized qualification for a care, childcare, special needs, business or training role, studied from home around a job.
What learners can study
The catalog is built around QQI component certificates and major awards. The About page offers "a choice of over 90 QQI Levels 5 & 6 component Certificates and Major Award programmes", and the homepage, counting undergraduate degree programs too, says over 100.
Healthcare is the largest area, with over 20 Level 5 and 6 courses according to the homepage: Care Skills, Care of the Older Person, Infection Prevention and Control, Palliative Care Support, Dementia Care and Awareness, Medical Terminology, Nursing Theory and Practice, Mental Health at Level 6, a Healthcare Support (Pre Nursing) major award, a Healthcare Support Assistant major award, and a Care Assistant for HSE Disability Services major award. Childcare and education courses include the QQI Level 5 and Level 6 Early Learning and Care major awards, School Age Childcare, Children with Additional Needs, Autism in the Early Years Sector, Child Psychology, and Special Needs Assistant courses at Level 5, Level 6 or combined.
Business and management offers "25+ QQI Accredited Online Courses", among them Business Administration, Business Management, Business Law, Business Planning, Finance, Human Resources, Employment Law, Project Management, Purchasing and Procurement, Supervisory Management, Customer Service, Event Management and an Advanced Business Management major award. Smaller groups cover digital marketing and eBusiness, psychology and sports psychology, creative writing and journalism, sports and fitness, law, and training, where Train the Trainer at Level 6 and a Training and Development Special Purpose Award sit. The college also offers a BA (Hons) in Health and Social Care as an online degree.
How study works
Study is mostly online, through a Moodle learning platform, but the About page lists "Distance learning, eLearning, Classroom & Blended Learning" as formats. Enrollment never closes: "Start our courses at any time. We enrol students throughout the year and with our Online Learning format you can study at your own pace and anywhere that suits you." On length, it says the "Majority of our courses can be completed in less than 3 months." The major awards are "8 module, Year long programmes", and the Early Learning and Care major awards run in intakes, with the next ones advertised for January 2027.
Each learner is "appointed a tutor for the duration of your course". Tutors help with course content, assess progress through assignments, give written feedback on assignments, and help with course-related problems. The About page adds that "you can always contact the College staff or drop into us if you have a particular difficulty." Attendance courses run at a Learning Centre in Dublin 18 and in Drogheda, Galway, Limerick, Cork and Waterford. Reviews on the homepage name tutors and mention weekly virtual sessions on the Train the Trainer course.
Recognition and protections
The About page states: "All our Awards are Fully Validated & Approved by QQI", and describes the college as a "QQI and SOLAS Approved Training Provider". It says learners can "gain an Internationally Recognised Qualification". Two practical points stand out for care and childcare learners: the college is "an approved Garda Vetting Organisation" and "can also cover our Learners Insurance requirements while out on Work Placements." On fees, it says "All Open College courses of over 3 months in duration are bonded and protected", so that if students ever had to rely on that fee protection scheme they "will have their course finished out for them and when this is not possible they will have their fees refunded." There is also a Recognition of Prior Learning route.
Prices and payment plans
Prices are published, and the college says so as a policy: "We always publish all our course prices and inform the learners on everything they need to make the proper decision." Every distance learning and eLearning course "can be paid for over a two, three or twelve month period (depending on course length)."
The sample single module is QQI Special Needs (Level 6), a 3-month module with a full course fee of €335.00, or two monthly payments of €170.00. The major awards start "from only €104 per month over 12 months". The listed examples are the Level 5 Early Learning and Care major award at €129 a month, Healthcare Support and Care Assistant for HSE Disability Services at €104 a month each, the Advanced Level 6 Early Learning and Care major award at €129 a month, Advanced Business Management at €106 a month, and Sports, Recreation and Exercise at €112 a month.
The terms are spelled out. The page warns that "In most cases Easy Payment options will cost more than if you paid in full and upfront" and that a plan is "a legally binding contract for which you will be personally liable." Payments fall due on the enrollment date each month, and "A late or non payment invalidates this arrangement and to continue with the course the outstanding balance must be paid within two weeks of missed date." A learner may cancel in writing within 7 days but will "lose the value of your first payment"; after 7 days the full outstanding balance is owed. Payment is by debit or credit card, standing order, bank draft or postal order.
Employers, support and community
A corporate training service offers "bespoke Corporate Training solutions" built on the same QQI programs, and the college runs in-house training for companies. Course advisers answer questions by phone, with advice lines open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5.00pm, and by email, and a free prospectus is available on request. A Careers Hub offers job listings and career advice. The college's charity partner is Mental Health Ireland: learners can add a small donation at checkout, which the college matches up to €3,000.
Who it suits and who it does not
The Open College suits an adult in Ireland who needs a QQI award for work: a healthcare assistant, a special needs assistant, an early years educator working toward a Level 5 or 6 major award, or an office worker adding a Level 6 business or HR module. Published prices, monthly payment plans, year-round enrollment, a dedicated tutor and fee protection make the commitment clear before signing up.
The payment plan terms are strict, though, and learners should read them before enrolling, since canceling after 7 days leaves the full balance owed. Learners who want a live, timetabled class will find most of the catalog self-paced, with classroom attendance offered at the Dublin center and a handful of regional locations.
