What learndirect is

learndirect is a UK online learning provider for adults who want a recognized qualification without attending a college: a school-level resit, a route into university, or a vocational certificate for a new career. The homepage calls it "The UK's largest online learning provider" and backs that with its own figures: 25 years helping people learn, more than 4.5 million learners since 2000, 75,000 businesses trained, 12 official awarding bodies, 93% learner satisfaction and over 750 courses across 18 faculties. It is run by learndirect ltd, registered in England and Wales, with an office in Bournemouth. Study is described as flexible and fully online, with courses you can start at any time.

What you can study

The faculty menu gives a good sense of the range. For learners heading to university there are Access to Higher Education Diplomas, which the homepage describes as a way into university without A-Levels and "A recognised route to a degree in under a year", with a separate Access to HE Nursing strand and access routes in health professions, midwifery, medical science and paramedic science. School-level study covers online GCSEs and A-Levels, plus Functional Skills in English and maths, including Level 2 courses. A set of Online Degree Pathways covers computing, accounting, management for health and social care, business and management, law, cyber security, quantity surveying and psychology.

Vocational faculties cover teaching and education (early years, teacher training, teaching assistant), healthcare (Level 3 and Level 5 Diplomas in Adult Care and a Level 3 course on preparing to work in adult care), professional qualifications from AAT, CIPD, CIM and CMI, and TEFL, including a Level 5 Trinity course, a Level 5 TEFL Diploma and TEFL internships. There are also faculties for beauty and well-being (beauty therapy, nail technician, foot health), animal care and veterinary, mental health, creative arts (interior and fashion design at Levels 2 and 3, and an Access to HE in art and design), dental, project management, sustainability, and short courses in business, HR, IT and cyber security.

Two of those faculties matter for readers coming from other parts of this directory. The IT courses are pitched around "web design, coding and IT", sitting next to a networking and cyber security faculty and the computing and cyber security degree pathways. The health and fitness faculty offers fitness and nutrition courses for people who want to work as a coach or personal trainer.

How studying works

Courses are self-paced: the A-Level line reads "Study A-Levels online at your own pace, with no classroom required", while the GCSE line promises "full tutor support throughout". The teacher training page describes the online model in more detail, with immediate access to interactive learning platforms and dedicated tutor support to guide learners through their assignments, and says the courses have qualified tutors to keep learners on track. The site's menu also lists virtual classes, a community hub and free resources, and the course search has categories for course swaps, extensions and fast track study. Course lengths depend on the qualification; the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Education Professions, for instance, lists completion as possible in 9 to 12 months.

Qualifications and awarding bodies

The teacher training page sums up the offer as "Online and workplace learning with RQF, Endorsed and Certified qualifications", and its listings name the awarding body and level for many courses. Examples include the BIIAB Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Advice and Guidance (RQF), the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA), the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills), and TQUK Level 2 certificates in awareness of mental health problems and of bullying in children and young people. The page's FAQ says the Level 5 Diploma is designed to meet the criteria for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status. Elsewhere, the accounting faculty is labeled AAT-accredited, the Access to HE Diplomas are described as a "UCAS-recognised pathway", and the TEFL courses as an "internationally recognised qualification".

Prices and payment

Most courses are priced per month. The homepage lists nursing courses from £1.99 a month, and almost every other faculty, from Access to HE and teaching to IT, TEFL, fitness and short courses, from £29.99 a month. The teacher training listing shows how wide the range is in practice, with every course on that page marked 25% off: the Forest Schools introduction from £22.97 a month, CAVA and the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training from £28 a month, the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching from £49.03 a month, the Access to HE Diploma in Education Professions from £66.62 a month and the Level 3 NVQ in Advice and Guidance from £80 a month. Shorter courses carry a one-off price instead, such as Educational Psychology at £164.99, Education in Psychology at £194.99 and the two TQUK Level 2 certificates at £244.07 and £299.99. A code on the homepage, FS5, takes an extra 5% off Functional Skills courses.

The credit terms explain the monthly model. Buy now pay later is described as an up to 12 month, 0% APR, unregulated payment option provided by learndirect ltd, while regulated credit may be offered by partners, with learndirect acting as a credit broker. Credit is available on selected products only, is subject to status, and is for over 18s only.

For employers

The business side runs through Click HSE, which the site presents as a learndirect company. It offers CPD-accredited compliance training for UK businesses across 82 courses, covering health and safety (DSE, manual handling, RIDDOR), fire safety, first aid, HR and compliance topics such as GDPR, safeguarding and equality, food hygiene levels 1 to 3 and HACCP, and soft skills, with reporting from a single dashboard. Pricing starts from £25 per license, with volume discounts.

Support and reviews

Prospective learners can take a free career quiz of one to two minutes that matches them to courses and careers and produces a personalized Career Guidance Report to download. Course advisers are reachable by phone or through a callback request for a morning, afternoon or evening slot, and existing students can use the same form for course advice or tutor and admin support, or go to the support center. The site shows a Trustpilot rating of 4.5 out of 5 based on 32,336 reviews, and the reviews shown mostly praise named advisers; one parent looking for a Functional Skills course for a neurodiverse daughter calls an adviser named Callum incredibly knowledgeable and praises the company for being patient and understanding.

Who it suits

learndirect suits UK adults who want a formal, named qualification studied from home on a monthly payment: someone resitting GCSEs, a career changer heading for university through an Access to HE Diploma, a teaching assistant working toward a Level 5 teaching diploma, or a bookkeeper studying AAT. Its breadth also covers fitness, IT and creative courses, and employers can use Click HSE for compliance training. Because prices vary so much between a £1.99 monthly nursing course and a multi-level diploma, it is worth comparing the monthly figure and the course length together before enrolling.
