What NHA is
NHA is a Dutch home-study school (thuisstudie) for adults who want to learn a profession, a language, a hobby or a secondary school subject at their own pace. Its homepage describes NHA as "één van de grootste opleiders van Nederland" (one of the largest training providers in the Netherlands) offering more than 700 programs and courses, and says it has specialized in distance learning since 1935. The school is based in Panningen, its slogan is "Dit is jouw tijd" (this is your time), and the homepage shows a score of 9.0 out of 10 on eKomi from more than 10,000 students. Courses are sold one at a time, and every course can be tried free for 15 days.
What you can study
The catalog has five main branches. Professional training (beroepsopleidingen) is the broadest, with fields such as administration, beauty and wellness, building and engineering, coaching, communication, complementary care, computers, counseling, animal care, drugstore work, health care and welfare, hospitality and events, HRM, ICT, logistics, real estate and financial services, management, marketing, enterprise, education, public order and safety, psychology, law, social and educational work, tourism, and nutrition and sport. A second branch, Eigen Bedrijf Starten, groups courses aimed at starting your own business, from beauty and photography to coaching and writing.
Coaching is one of the deepest areas. The professional coaching page lists 52 studies, from breath coach and ADHD coach to life coach, career coach, children's coach, burn-out coach, budget coach, sleep coach, personal trainer, professional organizer and walking coach, alongside related programs such as doula, grief counseling, debt assistance and train the trainer. The page points to branch-recognized courses such as BGN weight consultant, which leads to admission to the register of the Nederlandse Federatie Gezondheidszorg so that future clients can claim reimbursement from their health insurer. The start-your-own-business version of the coaching page lists 35 studies for people who want their own practice.
Language courses cover popular languages such as Spanish, French, English, German and Italian, others such as Arabic, Turkish, Polish and Japanese, and less common choices including Dutch Sign Language, Papiamento, Indonesian, Frisian and Swedish, plus business courses such as Business English and Dutch for speakers of other languages. A secondary school branch prepares adults for VMBO, HAVO and VWO subjects and full profiles, and a hobby branch covers creative courses, music, photography and film, writing and more. Featured courses on the homepage include Spanish, basic bookkeeping (BKB), dental assistant, photography, Excel and VWO mathematics B, and newer titles include a ChatGPT course.
How studying works
The course pages describe the lesson package arriving as a printed ring binder by post, with the material in most cases also in Plaza, NHA's online learning environment. Students send their homework to their teacher through Plaza at the end of each lesson, and it comes back corrected with advice, an explanation, a grade and answers to any questions. The course pages say that choosing a course with help ("cursus met hulp") brings "3 jaar lang persoonlijke studiebegeleiding" (3 years of personal study guidance), and that the personal teacher introduces themselves at the start.
Plaza also holds the study guide, lessons, videos, a read-aloud function, all homework and exam grades, a media library with downloads, an online motivation coach who monitors progress and sends tips, and contact with fellow students on the same course. Students get access to an e-book library of 75 e-books and 41 audiobooks. NHA groups its study tools under the name Easy Learning, which, depending on the course, can include instruction videos, a language app, listening and speaking exercises, practice days, practice exams, a materials package and even an entrepreneur coach. A smart assistant answers subject questions at any time of day alongside the teacher.
Two courses in detail
The Papiamento for Beginners course has 20 lessons built around the course book "Dosplak i boka", with a support book and audio files, and is developed at CEFR level B1. It is planned at 12 months at 4 hours a week and costs €269, or 12 payments of €25.00. It ends with an exam for the NHA institute diploma, which can be taken digitally at a location near you: "Dagelijks kun je digitaal je examen afleggen op een locatie bij jou in de buurt." The exam fee is €132.50, paid only on registration. Without an exam, a certificate (getuigschrift) costs €29 if all homework averages 5.5 or higher. Enrolling also brings five years of free access to the NHA language app, valued at €50, with more than 50 topics and over 50 hours of extra practice.
VMBO Maatschappijleer (civics) prepares for the official state exam, covering culture and socialization, social differences, power and influence, and image formation and stereotyping. It is planned at 6 months at 4 hours a week and costs €259, or 12 payments of €24.00, ending in a recognized certificate. Students register for the state exam with DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs) by 31 December each year, choosing an exam location near them. The government sets the exam fees: up to about €720 for a full VMBO exam, about €144 per subject with both a central written exam and a school exam, and about €71 per subject with one of the two. Practice exams are available for many subjects.
Recognition and guarantees
The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has recognized NHA under the WEO (Wet erkende onderwijsinstellingen) to train students for the secondary school state exams, and the pages list the VMBO, HAVO and VWO subjects and profiles covered. The Papiamento course, for example, falls outside it, as its own page states. The course pages also state "NHA is Cedeo-erkend" and describe that recognition as a strong recommendation from HR managers, useful for students whose employer contributes through a personal development budget. On exams, NHA gives what it calls a full exam guarantee: if you fail, your teacher guides you free of charge until you pass. A separate rule refunds the tuition for a failed exam if all homework was sent in monthly, the student sat one theory exam twice without passing, and the whole course was completed and paid for, valid up to three years after enrollment.
Support and offers
Students can call or WhatsApp customer service from Monday to Wednesday 08:30 to 21:00, Thursday and Friday 08:30 to 18:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 15:00, book a free advice conversation, take a free study choice test or try a free trial lesson. The homepage was also running a promotion with a welcome gift and a second course free. The homepage tells student stories such as Jorrit, 34, who became a personal trainer and opened his own sports studio, Cristina, 47, who started her own children's coaching practice, and Kees, 62, who became a beer specialist through home study.
Who it suits
NHA suits Dutch-speaking adults who like to learn from printed material with a personal teacher behind them: someone retraining as a coach, an adult finishing VMBO, HAVO or VWO subject by subject for the state exam, a holidaymaker learning Papiamento or Spanish, or an employee using a training budget. The 15-day trial and per-course pricing make it easy to start small, and the long guidance period on courses with help suits people who need time.
