Stonebridge Associated Colleges

Tap a star to rate

Stonebridge Associated Colleges is a distance learning college for adults that sells its online courses on a monthly subscription rather than course by course. The home page says "We established Stonebridge College in 1997 giving us over 21 years of solid experience in the delivery of professional distance learning," and adds that in that time it has "introduced hundreds of online courses" which "have made vocational training convenient, affordable and beneficial for a wide range of mature students." Its current catalog centers on Access to Higher Education Diplomas for adults heading to university, plus vocational courses in education, health and social care, functional skills English and maths, and veterinary science and animal care. Every course is studied online with tutor support, and the site carries the company's UK registrations.

How the subscription works

The subscription is the defining feature, and the site describes it in plain terms: "Pay an affordable monthly subscription fee." There is no fixed term. The home page headline reads "You're in Control...No Commitment. Cancel Anytime," and the text underneath explains what that means in practice: "You can pause or cancel your studies and payments anytime. If you want to return later, just reactivate your subscription and pick up right where you left off," with no long-term credit agreement involved. A note beside the sign-up button repeats "*No credit agreement."

For an adult learner, the pause option is the practical difference from buying a course outright. A learner whose circumstances change can stop paying and stop studying, then come back to the same point later instead of losing what has already been paid for. The company's blog sets out the reasoning: the ability to halt studies and payments "removes the pressure and cost of losing access to materials you've paid for but haven't completed," and a monthly payment replaces "a large upfront fee." The same post describes Stonebridge's offer as "100% Online Study: Complete flexibility to study from anywhere in the world." It also stresses that the pause or cancel option means learners are not locked into a long-term credit agreement and keep control of their enrollment and their payments.

The home page and the blog do not state the monthly fee itself.

What learners study

The course finder groups the catalog into five areas, each with a stated course count.

Access to Higher Education Diploma courses are the largest group, with 14 courses available. The subjects listed are Nursing, Midwifery, Health Professionals, Social Science, Medicine and Healthcare Professions, Science, Humanities, Business and Management, Social Work, Education and Health. The blog names further diplomas, including Access to Higher Education Diplomas in Veterinary Science, Criminology, Psychology and Health Science Professions, and describes the group as "a powerful university-entry route for adults without traditional A-Levels." For an adult who left school without the qualifications a university asks for, this is the main reason to look at Stonebridge.

Education courses number two: Early Years Educator and Childcare, and Teaching Assistant. The blog groups these as "Essential Vocational Qualifications" for "career-specific training."

Healthcare courses number three, listed under Health and Social Care. The blog also mentions a Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care (RQF) for learners who want "to advance in the health sector."

English and Maths has one course, English and Maths Functional Skills. The blog describes it as "Functional Skills English & Maths Level 2 Including Exams" and calls it "vital for securing many jobs or progressing to higher education." The course title itself says the exams are included.

Veterinary Science and Animal Care has three courses, listed under Veterinary and Zoology Qualifications.

Taken together, the five areas work as a ladder, which is how the blog presents them. Functional skills English and maths at Level 2 cover the basics many jobs and further study ask for. The vocational courses lead toward early years, teaching assistant and care roles. The Access to Higher Education Diplomas sit at the top for adults who want a degree. The same post says the college concentrates on career-focused and academic programs, which matches the catalog: every area leads either to a job or to a university place.

Study and support

Study is fully online: "Complete your course and get qualified entirely online." Learners reach their course materials through the student portal, Access My Learning, and the login screen separates students who registered on or before 12 December 2018 from those who registered after, so long-standing and newer students sign in by different routes. Because study happens when the learner chooses, it fits around work and family, which is the point the blog makes most often.

Support comes from tutors. The home page promises "Qualified tutors who will support, encourage and care for you," and the blog says learners receive dedicated support from qualified tutors, "ensuring help is always available, even while studying independently." Before enrolling, prospective students can call a career adviser line, which the home page advertises with "Speak to a career adviser now," or use the live chat on the site. The site also runs a refer-a-friend scheme, and the home page points to Stonebridge's Trustpilot reviews.

Registration and regulation

The site states that Stonebridge Associated Colleges Limited is registered with the UK Register of Learning Providers under UK Provider Reference Number 10006352, and that it is authorized and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference number 673930. The pages do not name the awarding body behind each diploma. The blog goes further in its own wording, saying "Stonebridge is accredited by the UK Register of Learning Providers and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, maintaining rigorous academic and financial standards."

Who it suits

Stonebridge suits an adult who wants a route into university without going back to a classroom, especially one aiming at nursing, midwifery, social work or another health and social care degree, where the Access to Higher Education list is deepest. It also suits someone training for work in an early years setting or in a school as a teaching assistant, a care worker looking at an adult care diploma, and an adult who needs a Level 2 functional skills qualification in English or maths with the exam included. Mature students are the audience the college names itself.

The subscription is the strongest reason to choose it: no credit agreement, a monthly payment, and the right to pause or cancel. The trade-offs are that the price is not on the home page, and that study is self-directed with tutor support rather than taught in live classes, so a learner who needs fixed lessons to keep momentum will have to build a routine of their own.
