Oxford Home Study Centre, usually shortened to OHSC, is a UK-based online learning provider selling self-paced home-study courses to adults around the world. The homepage calls it "a trusted leader in flexible distance learning" whose courses "cover business, management, teaching, healthcare, digital skills, and many other in-demand fields." Its model has two halves: a large catalog of free short courses, where study is free and a certificate is an optional purchase, and paid diplomas, many carrying QLS endorsement and CPD accreditation with the certificates included in the price. The reader is an individual learner, from a beginner sampling a subject to a working adult adding a diploma to a CV.

Size and reach

OHSC publishes its own figures on the free courses page: "More than three million learners have studied with OHSC, contributing to over two million course completions," and it "serves learners across 195 countries." The same page counts "468 free courses" in its numbers section and gives the full catalog as "1,000+ Courses". The subject menu covers areas including artificial intelligence, forensic accounting, construction management, project management, fashion design, supply chain management, hotel management, diet and nutrition, beauty therapy, interior design, event management, public relations, health and safety, psychology, wedding planning, cyber security, human resource management, life coaching, logistics, teaching assistant, bookkeeping, food hygiene, counseling skills, security management, legal studies and remote work careers.

Free courses

The free side is spelled out carefully. "Course access, learning materials and required assessments are free. Certificates are optional paid products." Enrollment opens year round, and free enrollment "includes access to the selected course, its online learning materials and the assessments required for completion." After passing, "learners may choose to purchase an optional certificate. Buying a certificate is not required to study or complete a free course." The FAQ adds that a learner can "optionally purchase a CPD or QLS certificate for a small fee" after finishing a free course.

The free catalog leans toward short practical and AI topics. The homepage shows ChatGPT for Beginners, Advanced ChatGPT and Prompt Writing, Generative AI Explained for Beginners, Machine Learning Fundamentals, Deep Learning Fundamentals, AI Content Creation with ChatGPT, Work-Life Balance with AI, Data Entry Skills for Beginners, Interview Skills for Beginners and Problem Solving Skills for Beginners. The most-taken free courses on the homepage are safety short courses: the COVID-19 Coronavirus short course shows 108931 enrolled and Fire Safety shows 12146. On entry, the FAQ says "All free courses are open to everyone, with no prior qualifications or experience required," and on time, "Many students complete their free courses within a few days or a couple of weeks." To qualify for the optional certificate, "you must pass the simple online assessments included at the end of each module." The FAQ also says learners on free courses "have access to guidance and support to help them understand the course content."

Paid diplomas

Paid courses are longer and carry their certificates in the price. The homepage lists the "Top Endorsed Courses for Professional Development", most of them advanced diplomas at £110, down from £275.00: digital marketing (42156 enrolled), building and construction (36484), cyber security (34572), bookkeeping QLS Level 5 (29878), teaching assistant (26789), facilities management (26752), warehouse management (21467), leadership and management (21464) and logistics management (18742). Shorter professional courses such as Critical Thinking Skills, Creativity and Creative Thinking, and Remote Digital Marketing Careers are £160, down from £400.00. A few courses cost more: a Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Information Technology at £595 (from £695.00), an SIA Door Supervisor Training Course at £350 (from £875.00), and a Level 5 Extended Diploma in Law at £1295 (from £1,395.00).

The Diploma in Personal Development QLS Level 7 shows what a paid course includes. It lists 620 hours of online, self-paced study, "No Requirements" for entry, a 4.5 rating and 18,543 students, at £198 down from £495 ("60% OFF"), with a "30-Days money-back guarantee". The syllabus runs over eight modules, from foundations of personal effectiveness and time management through emotional intelligence, stress and anger management, digital communication, creative problem solving, digital literacy and research, to executive presence. On certificates the page is explicit: "we will provide you with both a QLS-endorsed certificate and a CPD-accredited certificate in PDF format. The cost of both digital certificates is already included in your course price." Its feature list adds "Tutor Support Included" and "Online Assessments".

What the certificates are

OHSC is direct about what its certificates are not. The free courses page states that a "QLS-endorsed course is not the same as an Ofqual-regulated qualification", that CPD accreditation "does not automatically carry a level on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, confer professional status or provide a licence to practise", and that "purchasing one does not guarantee employment, promotion, university admission or professional recognition." It also warns that teaching-related courses "do not replace regulated qualifications, practical placements or safeguarding requirements", and that introductory accounting courses "do not confer professional accountant status." For a reader, that means the "QLS Level 7" in a course title names the endorsed course, not a regulated Level 7 award.

Study and support

All study is online with "No timeframe - Self Paced" on every listing. Assessment varies by course: "Some courses use module-based assessments, while others follow a topic-based structure." The homepage promises that "Every programme includes professional tutor support, engaging study materials, and optional accredited certificates," and the FAQ says "Assistance from the OHSC team is available throughout the learning process." Learner reviews on the homepage mention "full supports and fast action on every units that i submitted," and one learner whose first language is not English praised the plain language: "it was very helpful for me to understand everything."

Who it suits and who it does not

OHSC suits a learner who wants to try a subject at no cost and decide later whether a certificate is worth paying for, and an adult who wants an inexpensive, self-paced diploma with QLS and CPD certificates for a CV or personal development record. The very large free AI and job-skills catalog makes it a useful first stop for someone exploring a new field, and the 30-day money-back guarantee on the paid course shown lowers the risk of trying a diploma.

It is not the route to a regulated qualification or a license to practice, and the site says so itself. Learners who need an Ofqual-regulated award, supervised placements or live teaching should treat OHSC as background study rather than the qualification itself.
