What Productside is
Productside is a product management training and advisory company. It trains individual product managers through live online, in-person and self-study courses with certification exams built in, and it works with companies through private team training, assessments, diagnostics and consulting. The company was formerly known as 280 Group, and the About page says the new name "reflects our singular focus: helping organizations succeed through strong product management." It was "Founded in Silicon Valley in 1998 and now fully remote," and says it supports "teams across industries and regions." The homepage counts 35,000+ certified Productside graduates.
The About page says its principal consultants and trainers "have held leadership roles at Amazon, Microsoft, and Honeywell." The trainers named on the site are Dean Peters, Ryan Cantwell, Kenny Kranseler, Roger Snyder and Tom Evans, each a Principal Consultant and Trainer, and Rina Alexin, Chief Executive Officer and Trainer.
The courses
Four courses lead the catalog, each with a stated audience on the homepage:
- Optimal Product Management: "Master the core skills of product management, from discovery to delivery," for "PMs who want to strengthen their end-to-end product skills."
- AI Product Management: "Design AI-driven products that deliver real business impact while using AI tools to streamline your day-to-day PM workflows."
- Digital Product Management: "Apply design thinking, rapid experimentation, and data-driven strategies to build and scale," for PMs "leading digital transformation for physical products or enhancing digital experiences."
- Agile Product Management: "Lead your team effectively in high-speed environments," for PMs "driving cross-functional collaboration and continuous delivery in fast-paced markets."
The FAQ recommends Optimal Product Management or Digital Product Management for beginners, calling both "great for new PMs or those transitioning into product roles."
Formats and course length
Each course runs in three formats. Live online and in-person courses take 3 to 5 days of training. Live online sessions run on Zoom, and the FAQ lists what a learner needs: a reliable connection of at least 5 Mbps, a laptop or desktop, an updated Chrome or Firefox browser, a webcam and a microphone.
Self-study is fully flexible, with 12 months to finish. The FAQ uses Optimal Product Management to show the structure: 6 units and 24 modules, modules of 8 to 12 minutes with the longest about 18, short interactive activities in most modules, a 3-question quiz after every module, downloadable PDF readings, and a full practice exam and study guide. Most learners finish OPM Self-Study in about 24 hours in total, which the FAQ breaks down as "about 14 h of video + 10 h of recommended practice and reading." Learners reach their courses through a learner login whose dashboard shows every enrolled course.
Certification
Certification is part of each course. The FAQ says "Courses include the corresponding AIPMM® or Productside exam and lifetime certification," and Optimal Product Management includes the AIPMM Certified Product Manager exam, which the homepage marks "(no upsell)." The homepage pitches that credential as "a global credential hiring managers recognize," and says learners "walk away with skills, artifacts, and a badge that boosts signal with recruiters and L&D." The exam cannot be bought without the training.
To earn the certificate of completion, live and in-person learners attend 75%+ of the sessions, and self-study learners complete all modules and pass the final quiz with at least 70%. Either way the certificate arrives by email within one to two business days, and the FAQ says certificates "support your path toward Certified Product Manager or Certified Product Owner credentials."
Exam scheduling instructions come by email after the course. The FAQ recommends booking 7 to 10 business days ahead, and says most exams take 90 minutes to 2 hours. A learner who does not pass after two attempts can buy a new voucher directly from AIPMM, or a $500 extension package from Productside "which includes an additional year of course access and two new exam attempts."
Booking, cancellation and transfers
The site lists no course prices; the chat and contact forms handle certification and pricing questions. The policies around a booking are spelled out in the FAQ. Canceling 10+ business days before a course brings a full refund, while canceling within 10 business days costs a $500 cancellation fee, and Productside may cancel a course with 10+ business days' notice and refund in full. Moving to another course date is free if requested 5+ business days ahead, costs a $500 transfer fee closer in, and is not allowed once the course begins; all training must be completed within 12 months of the original start. A live or in-person seat can be passed to a colleague by emailing support, while a self-study enrollment is a single-user license that can be transferred only before it is started. A buyer purchasing for someone else enters the participant's name and email in the order notes. The FAQ adds that "Many qualify as tax-deductible education expenses" and points learners to their tax advisor.
Assessments and diagnostics
Productside offers two free assessments. The Team Assessment, completed by leaders, "benchmarks your team's maturity and alignment across six key product dimensions": Context, Discover + Investigate, Discover + Define, Create, Deliver, and Leadership. Leaders receive a downloadable scorecard with maturity scores, benchmark comparisons and a gap analysis. The Individual Skills Assessment measures a product manager "in 13 skill areas" and benchmarks them "against over 6,000 PMs worldwide," producing a personalized report with gap analysis, targets and recommendations. Each takes about 10 to 15 minutes, results are immediate, and both can be retaken to track progress. Beyond them sit the Product Management Diagnostic Report, "a deeper, 360° analysis with an exec-ready plan," and consulting and advisory for "guided implementation, operating model tune-ups, and templates."
Team training and consulting
For companies, the homepage says Productside tailors "private, cohort-based enterprise PM training, product workshops, and product leadership coaching to the tools you use, your stage (seed to enterprise), and the KPIs you own." Corporate options include Team Custom Training, an Executive Leadership Workshop and Product Management Collaboration. The FAQ describes "tailored agendas, live exercises, and flexible schedules," and promises to "align content to your goals and coach your team through adoption." After training, the homepage says, "we continue to coach through any dips in the change curve." Consulting covers "diagnostics, org design, role clarity, roadmap governance, and hands-on advisory." The FAQ says Productside has trained companies "from every major industry" and can customize for industry-specific challenges.
Two frameworks run through all of it. The Productside Blueprint is a step-by-step framework linking strategy, execution and outcomes, and the Productside Playbook is described on the homepage as "23 ready-to-use templates for discovery, prioritization, and stakeholder alignment."
The alumni community
Graduates can join Productside Connect, the alumni community, at no cost, because "You already paid for the training." It is "Productside alumni only," and every application is reviewed. The hub sits on productside.com and the daily conversation happens in Slack. It runs biweekly Office Hours with trainers and guest experts, a Career Accelerator with hand-picked PM roles, resume and profile teardowns and hiring manager conversations, and Product Lab, recurring challenges on real product problems that peers review and a Productside expert answers. Profile badges show a member's standing (Founding Member, Ambassador, Trainer, Guest Expert), their participation, and where they trained, such as AIPMM Certified or Course Alum.
Outcomes the company reports
The homepage cites a Certification Outcomes survey in which "85% of Productside alumni report raises, promotions, or success landing new roles within one year of certification." The community page adds that 38% of live-trained graduates were promoted within 18 months, against 24% of self-study graduates, and that 48% "saw an increase in their salary within 18 months of certification." These are the company's own survey figures.
Who it suits
Productside suits product managers who want a structured course with an exam built in, especially those aiming at the AIPMM Certified Product Manager credential through Optimal Product Management. New PMs and career changers have a stated starting point, and people who need flexibility can take self-study with a year of access. It also suits product leaders who want to measure a team before training it, through the free Team Assessment, and companies that want training followed by coaching and consulting rather than a one-off workshop.
It is a less obvious fit for someone who wants to compare course costs online before talking to anyone, and the cancellation and transfer fees mean a live seat is a firm commitment once the course is 10 business days away.
