What Digital Marketing Institute is

Digital Marketing Institute (DMI) is an online school and certification body for digital marketing. It sells self-paced certified courses to individuals, training memberships to companies, and its certifications to universities and training providers. Its about page calls DMI "the global standard in Digital Marketing Certification" and says it has certified over 75k people with 300k+ members worldwide; the partner page puts those members in 135 countries, and a student review on the home page calls it an Ireland-based school.

The timeline on the about page starts with its founding in 2009 by Ian Dodson and Anthony Quigley and a first classroom delivery of the Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing. It goes on to quality assurance from the Scottish Qualifications Authority and content mapped to the European Qualifications Framework, a €26 million investment from Spectrum Equity with an office in Brisbane, a membership platform, and a partnership with the American Marketing Association (AMA) for dual certification on core course content. DMI partnered with the Australian Marketing Institute in 2021 and with Neil Patel Digital on a new Search Marketing Specialist course in 2022. In 2023 it was acquired by BPP Education Group and launched a new Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing. The CEO named on the about page is Michael Goeden.

The courses and certifications

Courses for individuals are self-paced and 100% online, delivered through the MyDMI platform with expert-led video tutorials, live webinars, podcasts, practical exercises, discussion forums and tutor support. The catalog runs in levels:

  • Short courses and AI tracks of a few hours each, such as AI Fundamentals for Marketing (5 hours), Advanced AI for Digital Marketing (8 hours), Social Media Strategy with AI (9 hours) and AI for Marketing, Agentic AI and Orchestration (13.5 hours), alongside Digital Marketing Essentials, Content Marketing, SEO, Paid Search (PPC), Email Marketing, eCommerce, Data & Web Analytics, UX & Website Design and a new Professional Soft Skills course.
  • DMI Pro, the Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing, which leads to the Certified Digital Marketing Professional (CDMP) credential and is pitched at career switchers, business owners and marketing managers. In the USA it is also offered as a DMI + AMA Professional Certificate with dual certification.
  • Specialist courses in Search Marketing and Social Media Marketing (27 hours each), Digital Strategy & Leadership, and Social Selling.
  • Advanced programs: DMI Expert, the Expert Diploma in Digital Marketing (52 weeks, also offered with AMA dual certification), the Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Marketing (16 months) and a Master (MSc) in Digital Marketing (24 months), which the site describes as BPP's master's program.

Inside a specialist course

The Digital Marketing Strategy & Leadership course shows how a DMI certification works. Co-developed with leaders who manage strategy and teams at companies such as Google, Microsoft and Kantar, it has 10 modules and approximately 32 hours of content, from managing marketing activities and brand communications through AI, analytics, data and ethics (including GDPR and privacy with AI) to managing a digital team, budgeting, digital leadership and building a digital strategy with SWOT and PESTEL analysis. Learners have up to 24 weeks to finish.

Assessment is one two-hour exam with a minimum pass mark of 60%. The first sitting is included in the course price, and re-sits after a failed attempt cost approximately €75 or the local currency equivalent. The FAQ places the course at level 5 in the UK grading system. Beforehand, a skills test and practice exams benchmark the learner against industry standards and produce a skills assessment report for each skill. The course page lists six months free with all courses and says enrollment makes the learner a DMI Professional Member with premium resources it values at €150, among them a digital marketing plan template, a social media calendar, an email campaign calendar and guides to AI tools for content, SEO and image generation. The syllabus is kept current by the Global Industry Advisory Council, which the course page lists with marketers from Google, Microsoft Advertising, YouTube, HubSpot, IBM, Kantar, the American Marketing Association and BPP University, among others.

Membership and keeping the credential current

DMI certifications stay valid through Continuing Professional Development. Certified members earn and record CPD credits through bite-size activities, from live webinars to micro-lessons, and renewing membership also gives access to the latest version of the course they studied. The Membership Hub holds toolkits, templates, webinars, micro-lessons and walkthroughs, updated weekly for a community the site puts at 300k members, and a Free Member tier gives limited access to it. A free online skills test is open to anyone.

Results the institute reports

DMI publishes its own survey results. Its 2024 CMO survey says 87% of employers are more likely to hire candidates with a DMI certification on their CV, and its 2024 Digital Skills Gap & Corporate Training Report says 93% of employers prioritize candidates with professional industry certifications when hiring. Its 2024 alumni survey reports that 44% of graduates got a promotion within 12 months of certifying, that 73% of those promoted credit the DMI certification, and that the 74% who got a salary increase gained €11k on average. These are DMI's own figures from its own surveys.

Pricing and payment

The course pages advertise sale discounts of up to 30% and payment in full or in 3 installments. Among the prices the site prints, the Professional Soft Skills course usually costs €495 per user (£370 in the UK). In the UK, DMI also partners with Estio on a Digital Marketing Apprenticeship Programme (Multichannel Marketer): 13 months plus assessment, costing £11,500, covered by the Apprenticeship Levy, and leading to the Level 3 Multi-Channel Marketer standard and the CDMP.

For businesses

The business offer is a training library sold as membership: Business Membership for 2 to 30 users and Enterprise plans for 31+ users. Teams get 20 certified courses and learning pathways, which the site says hold thousands of lessons across 20+ digital marketing and sales topics, plus over 2,000 micro-lessons, live webinars, a community forum, how-to guides, toolkits, video tutorials and podcasts, with new content added weekly. Plans start from as little as €195 per person, with fees set by team size and access plan, savings of up to 50% against individual fees, a current 20% offer on the Business Team Plan for 3+ users, and a multi-year billing option.

Companies mix and match courses into learning paths, such as the Specialist Course Plan of 1 Pro and 3 Specialist courses, and can assess their people first with the Digital Skills Evaluation & Benchmarking Tool. The case studies include IBM, which rolled out custom training for 4K+ marketing and sales professionals across 23 countries, Vodafone with 4,000 marketers across 23 markets, and SAP with 300 employees. The home page says 96% of business members report that they upskilled and improved their role-related performance.

For universities and training providers

DMI's partner network counts 130+ partners across six continents. Partners can certify their students at associate level, based on the partner's existing assessments, or at professional level, where students become a CDMP after an exam. They choose from a catalog of 23 programs, can teach in classroom, online or blended formats, and their students and faculty get DMI Power Membership with over 1200+ pieces of content.

Who it suits

DMI suits marketers who want an assessed credential they can earn around a job, from a career switcher taking DMI Pro to a manager moving into strategy or leadership, and companies that want one standard across a marketing or sales department. The UK level mapping, the AMA dual certification and the BPP master's give options to people who need formal standing. It suits learners who like structure without fixed class times, while those who want live cohort teaching should note that individual courses are self-paced, with webinars and tutor support as the live elements.
