HSB-Akademie

Tap a star to rate

HSB-Akademie (HSB Akademie Schweiz) is an online academy that sells certificate courses, which it calls Zertifikatslehrgänge, to working adults, career changers and specialists in Switzerland. Its catalog covers IT, management, human resources and digital topics, all taught online through live evening lectures, printed study letters and optional full-day workshops. The home page counts 12 courses and 51 instructors and stresses teaching with a direct link to the Swiss world of work. This is a learner product: you enroll in one course, follow it over several months, sit an online exam, and receive your certificates by post. The site and the courses are in German, and the home page notes that no Matura (the Swiss upper-secondary school certificate) is needed to enroll.

Every course card on the site shows the level and the price in Swiss francs. The courses on the category and course pages are:

  • Sales Manager/-in, for beginners and advanced learners, CHF 3,105
  • Social Media Manager/-in, for beginners and career changers, CHF 2,105
  • IT-Security Manager/-in, for beginners and career changers, CHF 2,405

  • Qualitätsmanager/-in (quality manager), in the office category, CHF 2,605
  • a JavaScript course for beginners, CHF 659

The course finder also has sections for HR management (Personalwirtschaft), design management, personal development, online editing, event management and virtual reality. The Web & IT section, with the two web design courses, the JavaScript course, IT security and AI automation, is where the academy's technical training sits.

The FAQ says there are no hidden costs: lectures, workshops, the learning platform and the video conferencing software are free to use, and the exam fee is already included in the course price.

A course in practice: Webdesigner/-in

The Webdesigner/-in page gives the clearest picture of how a course runs. It lasts five months, includes two workshops, is built around seven focus topics, and ends with a certificate. The topics are website conception and project management, website structure and layout, two design modules, two technical implementation modules, and operation and maintenance. Learners build their own practice project during the course, and comprehension questions check progress along the way. Live lectures run from 19:00 to 20:30 via Zoom, and the page names six instructors with backgrounds ranging from web design and web technologies to data protection and AR/VR. The listed lessons are taught by different instructors in turn, so a learner hears several practitioners rather than one.

The home page describes the same study model for every course: personal study support, printed study letters (Studienbriefe) to deepen the material, instructor office hours, workshops for applying the material in practice, and live online lectures that can be followed from any device, at home, on the way to work or on holiday.

Lectures, recordings and course length

According to the FAQ, lecture times vary by course, but most lectures start at 19:00 and fall on the same weekday throughout a course, with changes announced in advance. Every lecture is recorded, so a learner who cannot attend live watches it later, and earlier recordings are also available, which lets someone work ahead.

The course length is flexible. The academy plans each course around a standard duration, but a learner can ask to shorten or extend it by up to half. The FAQ's example is a four-month course that can be finished in two months at the fastest or stretched to six months at most.

Access does not end with the course. The FAQ promises lifetime access to the content and says a graduate can still watch the latest lecture ten years later at no charge. The Webdesigner page lists lifetime access to the online campus among its features.

The full-day workshops are offered regularly. Because they are not part of the exam, the FAQ says learners can make them up later, even after finishing the course, at no charge.

Exams and certificates

Exams can be taken every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with an extra date on the first Saturday of each month. On exam day the learner receives a link, can start whenever they like and must finish by midnight. The exam has one hour for 15 randomly selected multiple-choice questions and 15 free-text questions, and the FAQ asks that free-text answers be written in the learner's own words, not copied from the study letters or the internet.

On passing, the learner receives two certificates by post, according to the FAQ: one from the Industrie- und Handelskammer (chamber of industry and commerce) in Dresden, which the FAQ compares with the Swiss chambers of commerce, and one from HSB-Akademie. Asked whether its courses are recognized, the FAQ answers yes, explaining that they are practice-oriented and aligned with the requirements of the Swiss labor market, and it links to two official Swiss pages about diploma recognition.

Support and technical needs

The FAQ says both the subject instructors and a study support team are available throughout. Before a course starts there is a short appointment where the academy shows the learner its HSB campus and answers early questions. Instructors hold office hours, and the FAQ stresses that they come from professional practice and bring that experience into the lectures.

The technical requirements are modest: a computer with an internet connection, a microphone and a camera. The FAQ says any standard laptop will do and that lectures run on Zoom, which can be downloaded free. Prospective students can book a free course consultation or request free information material, and the menu offers a taster lecture (Schnuppervorlesung) and a refer-a-friend scheme.

Who it suits

HSB-Akademie fits German-speaking adults in Switzerland who want a structured, certificated course next to a job, in marketing, sales, social media, web design, IT security, quality management or AI automation. Career changers are an explicit audience for several courses, and the flexible length, evening lectures and recordings suit people with irregular schedules. An employer who wants to put a staff member through a certificate course alongside work also has a straightforward option.

The caveats are about scope. The catalog is small, at 12 courses, so someone looking for a wide library of short courses will find more choice elsewhere. Everything is taught in German, so the courses are no help to a learner who needs English instruction. And the commitment is real: a typical course runs for months with a timed exam at the end, which is the point for someone who wants a certificate but more than a casual learner needs.
