What Christian Leaders Institute is
Christian Leaders Institute (CLI) is an online Christian school that offers its courses free of charge and pays for them through donations. It is a learner product for Christians who want Bible and ministry training, from someone exploring the faith to a volunteer, bi-vocational or full-time minister. The home page describes CLI as "a leading provider of online correspondence Christian education" and points to its listing in the U.S. Department of Education Database.
The funding model is the core of the offer. "All our courses are offered free, thanks to the support of donations," the home page says, adding that "Program fees are also kept affordable, thanks to our model of generosity." The pastoral training page explains the thinking: supporters believe ministry training courses should be free to those called into ministry, and that people called to be volunteer, bi-vocational or full-time ministers should not carry education debt. The FAQ answers the obvious question directly: "Is the biblical study truly free? Yes. Supported by Vision Partners, our courses are free to access." What costs money is the credential layer on top of the courses, covered below.
The home page puts its reach at "900,000+ Signed Up", "70,000+ Graduates" and "200+ Free Online Courses."
How study works
CLI calls itself a correspondence school and is firm that this is not ordinary distance learning. "Don't confuse online correspondence education with distance learning," the home page says. Students progress at their own pace, without required class times, and have 24-hour access. The page sums up the model in three points: it is "100% self-paced" with no scheduled Zooms or discussion boards, it is accessible globally with nothing more than internet access needed to start, and it is donation-supported with "no tuition for courses; low credentialing costs."
In practice that means you create a free access account and start a course whenever you like. There is no group to keep up with and no fixed calendar. The course library includes full courses and shorter mini-courses, sorted into Getting Started Courses, Bible/Theology Studies, Business/Enterprise Studies, General Studies, Ministry Studies, Ministry Skills, and Mini-Courses. Recent posts on the home page announce free courses such as a People Skill Confidence Course, an Introduction to Spiritual Growth course and a Soul Coaching Skills course, which gives a sense of how wide the catalog runs beyond formal theology.
CLI describes its content as "biblically rooted and guided by qualified faculty members," and says its courses "are not only practical but are theologically sound." The site's menus also carry a Statement of Faith, a Student Handbook, a Non-English Admissions page and a Transfer Information page.
The three programs
CLI organizes its offer into three core programs, each with a different reader in mind.
Christian Development School. This is the free entry point, for Christians seeking discipleship, biblical growth or entry-level ministry training. It offers free correspondence courses in Bible, theology, ministry, evangelism, church planting, prayer, apologetics and Christian philosophy, all self-paced. Completing programs here can earn what the site calls low-cost micro-credentials: awards, certificates and diplomas. The school names its audience plainly: people curious about Christianity, new believers wanting discipleship, Christians wanting deeper Bible knowledge, homeschoolers or churches building a discipleship track, and anyone looking for a free Bible school experience.
Leadership Excellence School. The degree track, for Christians pursuing academic degrees for vocational ministry or professional development. Courses stay tuition-free and students pay only for low-cost degrees and services. Degree options listed on the home page are Associate Degrees in Divinity, Chaplaincy or Christian Leadership; a Bachelor of Divinity, Bachelor of Chaplaincy and Bachelor of Christian Leadership; ministry concentrations in Philosophy, Business, Church Planting, Advance Biblical Studies, Women's Ministry and Youth Ministry; Christian Business; and a Christian Philosophy Major. The school is pitched at church leaders needing formal training, missionaries and bi-vocational ministers, and students who want to move on to graduate study.
Christian Leaders Alliance (CLA). The credentialing and ordination arm, for people called to volunteer, part-time or full-time ministry, people asked to officiate a wedding or funeral, and Christians called to chaplaincy, coaching ministry or leading Soul Centers. CLI's courses are recognized by the Alliance, which the home page says "provides low-cost, legally recognized ordination pathways." Officiant roles include Wedding Officiant, Funeral Officiant, Youth Ministry Officiant and Christian Officiant; minister roles include Field Minister, Licensed Minister, Life Coach Minister, Ministry Chaplain, Youth Minister, Ordained Minister and Minister of the Word. The site links to state-by-state ordination requirements, and its FAQ answers "Can women be ordained? Yes! CLI and CLA support women in ministry leadership."
Pastoral and specialized training
The free pastoral training page is aimed at people who feel called to be a pastor and at pastors who never received formal training. Its courses cover Biblical Studies, Theological Studies, Ministry skills and Preaching skills, with many awards programs and courses of study for areas such as youth or marriage ministries. Several specialized programs sit alongside it:
- Licensed Christian Wedding Ministers, for volunteer or bi-vocational ministry, licensing you to perform a Christian wedding ceremony as a minister with the Christian Leaders Alliance.
- Ordained Minister programs, for people who want more in-depth training and ordination recognition.
- Chaplaincy, which the page says "has many courses of study for awards or college credentials."
- Life Coach Minister, which includes advanced training as a life coach and "a three-credit college-level course."
- Matchmaker Minister, "for the pastor called to assist those seeking a Christian spouse."
One ordained graduate quoted on that page, Christopher Nicholson, describes a ministry on his motorcycle and says "The minister training and ordination credential help me to explain my Ministry to others and let them know the level of my commitment to Jesus."
Fees and recognition
The courses are free; credentials carry fees. The home page says that in the United States a full bachelor's degree, including all books and materials, costs just $4,000, and that "In many developing nations, special tier pricing makes it even more affordable." The Leadership Excellence School section repeats the figure for a full Bachelor of Divinity, $4,000 total for U.S. students, with global tier pricing available, and the pastoral page says the college program's administration fees are tiered to be affordable in developing and developed nations. A What Has Fees? page and a list of 10 differences between traditional online education and the correspondence pathway sit behind links on the home page.
On recognition, the pastoral page says the Leadership Excellence School builds certificates, diplomas and degrees from your free courses, and that "the college degree is recognized by accredited institutes like Ohio Christian University if you desire to pursue master-level studies." The FAQ answers "Can I go to seminary after CLI? Many do. CLI graduates have successfully transferred to accredited graduate programs." The site also lists Academic Partners and an Accreditation page in its menus.
Student comments on the home page are consistent about value. Douglas M. from Illinois writes, "CLI is the most complete free education program that I found." Arnold M. from Maine says "The free classes are better than what most are charging for and will improve your life and those around you."
Who it suits
CLI suits a Christian who wants to study the Bible and ministry seriously without paying tuition, and who is comfortable working alone at their own pace. It fits new believers and churches building a discipleship track, people asked to officiate a wedding or funeral who need a recognized credential, bi-vocational and volunteer ministers who want training without debt, and students in developing nations, where the site says special tier pricing makes credentials more affordable.
It is a weaker fit for anyone who learns best in a live class or wants discussion with classmates, since the model deliberately has no scheduled Zooms or discussion boards, and for people looking for secular personal development. Learners who plan to use a CLI degree elsewhere should read its Accreditation and Transfer Information pages before paying degree fees. For a self-starter who wants free, broad Christian training with an optional path to ordination or a degree, it is a generous and well-organized option.
