What UpSkill is

UpSkill is a cloud learning management system that lets an organization build, manage and sell its own training courses, and pay only when a learner starts one. The home page pitches it as "a powerful new business tool that enables organizations to BUILD, MANAGE and SELL their own training courses," and the headline speaks to two readers at once: companies that want to "slash internal training costs" and those that want to "Monetize your intellectual property" by selling what they already know. The product is run by UpSkill Learning Management System Pty Ltd.

What sets it apart is the pricing model. There is no subscription and no contract. Courses are free to build, and the organization pays with course credits each time a person goes through a course. The About page frames this as a reaction against the "excessive and unjustifiable" setup and license fees of older LMS products and the compromises of open-source ones, and describes the platform as a fully managed learning management system built on Microsoft technologies.

Building courses

The home page says "All courses are FREE to build," and the sign-up path is a free account: register, build as many courses as you like, and pay only when you invite people to take them. Course building runs through a free step-by-step course builder, and the platform supports "Flexible assessment and certification."

UpSkill handles six course types, listed on every page: online courses, SCORM courses, instructor-led or offline courses, video short courses, blended courses and 3rd party LMS courses. That range matters for a training team that runs classroom sessions alongside online modules, or that already has SCORM content from another tool. The "Build or buy" section adds that a course can either be created in UpSkill or purchased as an existing course from multiple providers, and managed with the same tools either way.

A free, customizable training website builder comes with the account, along with custom branding, so a company can put its courses on a branded training site rather than a generic portal.

Managing learners

On the management side, UpSkill offers "total control" of training: unlimited administrators, unlimited learners, usage tracking, completion reports, and automated account creation, notifications and reminders. The site's menus also list learner management, client management, aggregate training and powerful reporting. Accounts separate the two roles at login, where a person chooses to sign in as an administrator managing courses or as a learner taking one. The pricing page lists the platform as iOS and Android compatible, with API integration and automated upgrades.

A newer feature lets an organization authorize an external AI assistant to work in the platform. UpSkill creates a separate, permission-isolated AI Identity that cannot sign in to the website and has no administrator rights. The site states that the assistant cannot make purchases, that prices and quotes are always calculated by the platform's own pricing rules, and that every action is recorded against the identity and an accountable person on the client's team, who can adjust or suspend it at any time.

Selling courses

For organizations that sell training, UpSkill lets you set your own price, currency and tax rate at no extra cost. It includes an integrated quotation and invoicing system to keep track of orders, and PayPal and credit card payment options. To process a sale you need the required course credits in your account, and the pricing page says "all sales revenue goes directly into your designated account." Other selling features listed include custom pricing and terms, fast quotes, simple invoicing and client management.

A Course Marketplace is announced as "Coming Soon." It is described as the place to buy and sell courses developed on UpSkill, with search by free text, category and course provider, course overview pages, information packs, free course demos and learner ratings. The page says "All training courses are free to advertise," and lists sales features such as custom client license terms, volume discounts and online or offline invoicing.

Pricing in detail

The pricing page leads with "Pay as little as $2 or less per learner, per course." It then lists what is not charged: no license fees, no monthly access fees, no setup fees, no course creation fees and no hosting fees.

Payment works through course credits. "To put 1 person through your training course you will need 1 course credit," and credits can be used across all of an organization's courses. The feature list adds an important detail: an internal course costs 1 credit per learner, while a course for sale costs 3 credits. Credits are bought in packs, priced in AUD on the page with a switch for USD, GBP and EUR:

  • 50 credits for $175 AUD ($3.5 per credit)
  • 500 credits for $1,625 AUD ($3.25 per credit, save 7%)
  • 1,000 credits for $3,000 AUD ($3 per credit, save 14%)
  • 2,500 credits for $6,875 AUD ($2.75 per credit, save 21%)
  • 5,000 credits for $12,500 AUD ($2.5 per credit, save 29%)
  • 10,000 credits for $20,000 AUD ($2 per credit, save 43%)

For larger or ongoing requirements, the page offers larger credit packages and Enterprise Solutions through the sales team.

The one fixed cost is data storage for course resources such as images and video: $10.00 AUD per GB per month, with the first month free. The page explains this charge is what lets the rest of the service run without a contract or subscription.

Customization is a paid extra, quoted against an agreed scope of work. The services cover training course design, content design and development (copywriting, graphic design, video production, animation and interactive development), system and application integration, workflow process design, feature development, and custom website design. On integration, the page says that beyond the standard APIs, UpSkill can connect to payment gateways, HRIS, financial applications, client databases, existing learning management systems and other third-party software.

Support is listed as a 24 hour helpdesk, feature tours, help videos, and tips and hints.

Who it suits

UpSkill suits organizations whose training volume goes up and down: a company onboarding staff in waves, a training provider running courses for clients, or a professional body that wants to sell a course without committing to a yearly license. Because building is free and cost only arrives when a learner starts, a team can set up its whole catalog before spending anything beyond storage. The mix of course types, including instructor-led and blended courses, suits trainers who still teach in a room as well as online, and the quotation and invoicing tools fit businesses that sell training to other companies.

The trade-off is that cost scales with every learner. An organization putting the same large workforce through many courses every year should work out its credit spend against a flat license before choosing, and sellers should budget the 3 credits a sale consumes. The marketplace is not yet live, so a creator looking for a ready audience will need to bring their own buyers for now. For a small or mid-size organization that wants a capable LMS without a contract, it is a simple, transparent model.
