What cometas Is
cometas is a Swiss e-learning company based in Basel that offers three things from one team: the cometas LMS, a learning platform built on the open-source Moodle; the cometas Creator, an AI authoring tool; and custom e-learning development. The company's own summary reads: "Seit 2016 entwickeln wir massgeschneiderte Lerninhalte und betreiben ein Moodle-basiertes Learning Management System (LMS) mit Schweizer Hosting" (since 2016 we have developed custom learning content and run a Moodle-based LMS with Swiss hosting). It says more than 100 organizations in health, education, industry and public administration use its solutions.
The LMS page describes the platform as flexible, scalable and "ideal für Unternehmen jeder Grösse" (ideal for companies of any size), and the company names its target customers as Swiss SMEs, banks, insurers and public institutions. Its sector pages cover public and education, health and care, corporate and SME, and nonprofits and associations. The site is written in German.
Why Moodle
The open-source base is central to the pitch. The About page sets out the principle as "Freiheit als Prinzip" (freedom as a principle): customers should stay because the service is good, not because of lock-in. It continues: "Deine Daten gehören dir. Deine Plattform gehört dir." (Your data belongs to you. Your platform belongs to you.) cometas calls Moodle "das weltweit meistgenutzte Lernmanagementsystem" (the world's most widely used learning management system), backed by one of the largest open-source communities, and says "Niemand bietet dir ein breiteres Ökosystem an Funktionen, Integrationen und Weiterentwicklungen" (no one offers you a broader ecosystem of features, integrations and further development). What cometas adds is local expertise, personal support and the technical know-how to tailor Moodle, which it says it has optimized for Swiss companies with a modern design and simpler administration.
The cometas LMS
The LMS page lists the modules, all included in the price: an AI authoring tool, administration automation, reporting and audits with "Revisionssicherheit auf Knopfdruck" (audit-proof records at the push of a button), a course and seminar manager to replace spreadsheets, Microsoft integration, HR system sync, and open standards to protect existing content. The FAQ adds that the platform supports SCORM 1.2 and 2004, xAPI and LTI, so courses built in tools such as Articulate Storyline, Rise or Adobe Captivate can be imported in a few clicks. Single sign-on works through Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), so employees do not need a new password.
It is a cloud service: learners need only a browser or the cometas app. The home page says that anyone who can use a smartphone can learn on the platform, and that administrators get AI tools that handle routine tasks such as course descriptions and tests in seconds. Setup is fast by the company's account: technical provisioning of a preconfigured LMS takes 30 minutes, and a full rollout with branding and Microsoft 365 connections usually takes a few working days. The home page lists onboarding, compliance and safety, leadership development, and knowledge and processes as the main uses, with mandatory training "rechtssicher und nachweisbar" (legally sound and verifiable).
The cometas Creator
The Creator is the authoring tool, and it can work inside the cometas LMS or with another LMS. Its block builder offers "15 Bausteine" (15 building blocks) covering text, image and video through multiple choice, matching, slider and hotgraphics, all placed by drag and drop. The AI assistant works on the principle "Füge deine Inhalte ein, und die KI baut daraus ein fertiges, interaktives E-Learning" (paste in your content and the AI builds a finished, interactive e-learning course from it), leaving the author to refine it. The FAQ says the AI drafts course structures, writes text and quiz questions, and prepares existing material.
Other features include video hosted in Switzerland inside the platform, multiple language versions per activity with automatic translation that authors can then edit, team review with comments on individual blocks, branching that shows blocks according to a learner's answers or progress, interactive scenes for simulations and custom learning apps, and an AI tutor that "begleitet Lernende durch den Kurs, reagiert auf ihre Antworten und gibt individuelle Rückmeldung" (guides learners through the course, responds to their answers and gives individual feedback). Content is mobile first and responsive across devices.
For tracking, the Creator page points out that SCORM reports only roughly whether a learner passed, while the Creator "erfasst den Fortschritt pro Block und pro Interaktion" (records progress per block and per interaction). It connects to an existing LMS "über den offenen Standard LTI" (through the open LTI standard), without SCORM file handling. On AI and data, the AI model is interchangeable and can be connected to a company's own in-house LLM or a Swiss-hosted model.
Custom E-Learning Development
cometas also builds courses for clients. Its e-learning page lists the formats it produces: scenario-based web trainings, explainer videos and learning films "Mit echten Personen aus deinem Unternehmen oder als Animation" (with real people from your company or as animation), microlearning, interactive videos with questions and branching, chatbot and conversational learning, 360° video and VR scenarios, assessments, simulations, social and collaborative learning, blended learning and an AI chatbot. Its stance is "Didaktik statt Dekoration" (didactics, not decoration), and it measures success by behavior: "Ein E-Learning ist dann erfolgreich, wenn sich das Verhalten im Arbeitsalltag verändert. Nicht wenn eine Abschlussquote stimmt." (An e-learning succeeds when behavior at work changes, not when a completion rate looks right.) A typical module takes 4 to 8 weeks, courses can be built in German, French, Italian and English, and cometas delivers SCORM and xAPI packages for other LMSs.
Hosting and Data Protection
All instances are hosted in an ISO 27001 certified data center in Switzerland, and the company says data does not leave the country. It claims full compliance with the Swiss Data Protection Act (nDSG) and the GDPR, strict isolation of each customer's platform data, and no exposure to the US CLOUD Act or foreign authorities. Support comes from Basel.
Pricing and Getting Started
cometas publishes no price list. The LMS page promises "keine starren Nutzerlizenzen, keine versteckten Kosten" (no rigid user licenses, no hidden costs), and the FAQ explains that because the platform is open source, customers pay mainly for hosting, support and cometas's optimizations rather than per-head software licenses. The first step is a free, non-binding 15-minute consultation, followed by a strategy call with a live platform demo of 15 to 30 minutes.
Results the Company Cites
For medi, a Swiss center for medical education, cometas built 64 interactive anatomy modules across 10 organ systems with 3D models, used by more than 1600 students. For Basel-Stadt, it prepared 700 volunteers for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 with a bilingual mobile learning path. For AD Swiss Net AG and the Swiss Lung League, it turned a 100-page COPD brochure into 6 interactive modules in German, French and Italian on the cometas LMS. Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe used it for mandatory noise protection training.
Who It Suits
cometas fits Swiss organizations that want an LMS, an authoring tool and course production from one local partner, and that care where their data lives: SMEs, banks, insurers, hospitals, public bodies and associations, especially those with multilingual staff. Teams that value Moodle's open ecosystem but do not want to run it themselves get a hosted, maintained version with personal support.
Organizations looking for a self-service platform with a public price list will need a conversation first, and the site, written in German, addresses customers in Basel, Zurich, Bern and the wider DACH region.
