What Wordwall is

Wordwall is an interactive activity maker for teachers. A teacher types in a short list of words, questions or pairs, picks a template, and Wordwall turns it into a game, a quiz or a printable worksheet that the class can play on a shared screen or on their own devices. The homepage sums up the pitch as "More teaching, less prep," and says an activity takes about one minute to create. It is a tool for the lesson itself rather than a course platform: the unit of work is a single activity, which can then be assigned, embedded or printed. The pricing page says "Over 600,000 educators have subscribed to Wordwall," and a counter on the homepage reads "120,167,804 resources created."

Templates and activity types

The homepage advertises "30+ activity types," and the pricing page spells them out in two groups. The 12 standard templates come with every plan: Quiz, Match up, Flash cards, Speaking cards, Spin the wheel, Group sort, Find the match, Complete the sentence, Anagram, Open the box, Unjumble and Matching pairs. The Pro plan adds 22 more, among them Gameshow quiz, Type the answer, Spell the word, Flip tiles, Wordsearch, Hangman, Crossword, Maze chase, True or false, Balloon pop, Rank order, Whack-a-mole, Image quiz, Speed sorting, Win or lose quiz and Word magnets.

Each template has a simple rule, described on the homepage. In Match up, students drag each keyword next to its definition. Quiz is "A series of multiple choice questions. Tap the correct answer to proceed." Flash cards carry prompts on the front and answers on the back, Speaking cards are dealt at random from a shuffled deck for conversation practice, Group sort asks students to drag each item into its correct group, and Spin the wheel picks the next item at random, which teachers use for discussion questions and icebreakers. Complete the sentence is a cloze exercise, and Unjumble has students drag words back into the right order.

The matching game page describes the use cases plainly: vocabulary practice, language learning, math review and science concepts, with students matching "words to definitions, questions to answers, or images to labels." Students "get immediate feedback as they match pairs," and activities work on desktop, tablet or phone.

Building and adapting activities

Content goes in once and can then be switched between templates in one click, so the same word list can become a Wordsearch for individual practice or a whole-class Gameshow quiz on the big screen, in the pricing page's own example. Teachers can change the visual style with different backgrounds, sounds, music and animations, and adjust game options such as scoring, time limits and question randomization.

Paid plans include AI generation. The pricing page says the AI creates content that fits the chosen template, subject and student age group, or takes a few items the teacher entered and generates similar material.

The community library is the other half of the product. The pricing page puts it at over 25 million ready-made activities created by teachers, the homepage at 30 million, searchable by subject, age group or template. Any community activity can be copied and edited, or assigned as it is. The example activities on the template pages show how international the library is, with German grammar drills, French adjective agreement, Italian arithmetic and phonics, Chinese HSK vocabulary and English conversation prompts side by side.

Playing, assigning and printing

Activities can be played together on a classroom screen, or students can play on their own devices. The pricing page describes assignments for any activity, the teacher's own or one from the community, which students complete at their own pace while the teacher tracks class and individual progress and performance on specific questions. Activities can also be embedded on a school website, a blog or a learning management system. For offline teaching, any activity prints as a worksheet for class or homework and can be downloaded as a PDF to email or keep.

Plans and pricing

The pricing page shows prices in Swiss francs (CHF) and three individual plans, with school plans on a separate tab.

• Basic is free: up to 3 activities, the 12 standard templates and basic sharing options.
  • Standard, "For regular usage of our most popular templates," costs Fr. 10 a month, or Fr. 80 a year billed annually, a saving of Fr. 40 a year. It adds unlimited activities, access to the 25 million resources, AI generation, timers and scoring, and printing.
  • Pro, marked Recommended, costs Fr. 15 a month, or Fr. 120 a year billed annually (Fr. 10 a month, a saving of Fr. 60 a year). It adds the 22 extra templates and early access to new ones.

Annual billing is described as "12 months for the price of 8," marked 33% off. Payment is by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Apple Pay, Union Pay, SEPA Direct Debit or PayPal, and school plans can be paid by bank transfer. The first payment is taken on the day the subscription starts. Subscribers can switch between Standard and Pro, and between monthly and annual billing, from the Manage Payments menu.

The cancellation terms are spelled out. A subscriber can cancel at any time and no further payments are taken. After canceling, the teacher keeps the My Activities folder and can still play existing resources, and anything published or embedded keeps working, but new activities cannot be created and existing ones cannot be edited. A subscription can be resumed later.

Research the site cites

The homepage has a section headed "Backed by independent classroom research." It summarizes a 2025 pre-experimental study in the Journal of Education Technology of junior high school students aged 12 to 15, in which "Average test scores rose from 31.5 to 80.3." It also cites a 2022 survey in ELT Forum: Journal of English Language Teaching of 29 Indonesian 8th-grade students, who described Wordwall as exciting, interesting, motivating and fun and reported paying more attention in class. The site presents both as external research rather than its own, with links to the papers.

Teacher quotes on the pricing page are short and specific. A primary school teacher named Hayley writes: "Wordwall has my whole heart when teaching Gaeilge. So versatile and so many great pre-made games too!"

Who it suits

Wordwall suits classroom teachers who want quick, game-style practice: language teachers drilling vocabulary and grammar, primary teachers running review games, and anyone who needs a warm-up, a spinner for discussion topics or a fast quiz before the bell. The size of the community library means a teacher can often find an activity for tomorrow's lesson and adapt it in minutes, and printing makes the same content usable without devices.

It is less suited to anyone building a full online course, because everything in Wordwall is organized around single activities; assignments track progress activity by activity. The free Basic plan is tight at three activities, so regular users will need Standard, and the extra templates such as Crossword, Hangman and Gameshow quiz sit on Pro.
