What VirTutor Online is

VirTutor Online is a live online tutoring platform based in Accra, Ghana. Parents and students choose a tutor from its roster, agree lessons in the platform's chat, pay through its checkout and meet in its own online lesson space; every lesson is recorded for the family to watch back. The About page calls it "Ghana's first online tutoring platform with excellent online tutors in a wide range of subject areas," and the home page describes it as "West Africa's leading online tutoring platform." Both are the company's own claims. The About page names Laura Pepera as founder and CEO, and her welcome note says she "ventured into the online learning space from the young age of 16" before completing degrees in Clinical Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Spanish.

The home page invites families to "Join over 600+ Students Achieve Academic Excellence with VirTutor Online." The tutor search reads "Showing 6 of 45 tutors."

The problem it sets out to solve

The About page frames the service around how tutoring usually works in West Africa: "In-person tutorials are seen as the 'norm' in West Africa, however, this introduces a series of obstacles such as high costs due to transportation and restrictions of being able to select tutors in the student's immediate vicinity." It adds that "parents are often not present for their child's tutorials, therefore, it proves difficult to keep track of their child's academic progress and more importantly, their safety." Its answers are online lessons with tutors from anywhere, lesson recordings that let parents follow along, and tutors who have been screened and trained.

Curricula and subjects

The home page asks families to "Select your curriculum," with WASSCE, SAT, A Level and IGCSE as the headline choices. The tutor search filters by level: WASSCE, BECE, IGCSE, A Level, Lower Secondary, Primary (including "Primary (6-11 Years)"), International Baccalaureate, Test Prep, Certification, University and Languages.

The subject list is long and follows those syllabuses closely: Core, Elective, Additional and Further Mathematics; Integrated Science, General Science and Agricultural Science; English as a first and second language, English Language and Literature, and Literature-in-English; French and Spanish Language and Literature; Arabic; Business Studies and Business Management; Computer Science, Computing, Elective ICT, Information Technology and Digital Literacy; Art and Design, Creative Arts and Design Technology; Christian Religious Studies, Religious and Moral Education and Biblical Studies; Global Perspectives; Physical Education and Sports, Exercise and Health Science; and Ghanaian languages including Twi and Ewe. For test prep the list includes SAT, PSAT, GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, TCF and TEF, plus Personal Statement Support and Academic Applications. The home page also mentions a Young Athlete Development offer that supports "student-athletes with education, public speaking, and life skills alongside sports careers."

How booking and lessons work

The home page sets out four steps: tell the platform what tutoring is needed and when; read tutor profiles and message tutors; "Request a 15-minute free meeting call from your chosen tutors to determine who you click with best"; then accept the tutor's booking request and pay. The tutor search page puts it as "Book a Free Meeting with a Tutor."

The FAQ fills in the mechanics. A student messages the tutor from the profile, the tutor creates the lesson at the agreed time, and the student clicks that booking on the tutor's calendar to reach checkout, where lessons can be paid "via credit/debit card, mobile money or bank transfer." For several lessons, the student raises the number of hours at checkout and the price updates. The FAQ says "payment must be made 24 hours prior to the lesson taking place," and a lesson only appears on the student's dashboard once paid. Contact details stay private: "the sharing of contact details is strictly prohibited on the site," and documents are exchanged as attachments in the platform's chat.

Scheduled lessons "can be cancelled up to one hour before the start of the lesson" by messaging the tutor, and the student can then reschedule or request a refund through the site's refund form. The About page adds that a lesson can be rescheduled "FREE of charge." After each lesson, "all students/parents are provided with the recordings of each lesson in order to assist the students with their revision and allow parents to monitor their child's lessons closely." Separate sign-ins exist for parents or facilitators, students, tutors, and administrators who manage students for academies and schools.

The site recommends a desktop or laptop and says its mobile version "is currently under maintenance." The FAQ lists the latest Chrome, Firefox and Edge as the supported browsers.

The tutors

Tutor cards show qualifications and a self-written bio. Examples on the search page include a Ghanaian French graduate with over 5 years of teaching who also works in translation, a German tutor with four years of language teaching, a business leader who teaches Spanish to beginners and intermediate learners, and TESOL and TEFL certified English tutors.

On entry, the FAQ says: "Anyone with an academic qualification can be a tutor! The subject level you can teach is dependent on the highest level of your qualifications." The Become a Tutor page adds that the company is "looking for tutors who were at the top of their class, and have relevant experience." Applicants fill in a form that asks about criminal convictions, upload proof of their highest qualification and references, add a bio and an optional short intro video, give Ghanaian bank details and a Ghana Card number, and book an interview. Accepted tutors, the About page says, "have undergone a series of training to ensure they incorporate key activities in their lesson plans."

Tutors choose a Payment Level, starting at Level 1 and moving "towards Level 6 as you become more experienced and in demand." The FAQ says "VirTutors earn between GHS 50 and GHS 195 per lesson (per hour)." On payout timing the site is inconsistent: the FAQ says earnings are paid "on the first of the subsequent month," while the Become a Tutor page says tutors are paid "on the 10th of the following month" and, in another section, "twice a month."

Recognition and reviews

The home page carries a quote attributed to "CENDLOS, Minsitry Of Education": "VIRTUTORONLINE.COM has shown that it is a valuable tool for delivering and managing online learning." Student reviews include one from a learner of Ewe ("I have struggled for years to find a suitable teacher to study with and VirTutor Online solved that problem for me") who plans to keep studying from Tokyo, and one from an A Level student who says the team is "quick to respond."

Who it suits

VirTutor Online suits families in Ghana and the wider West African curriculum system who want a vetted online tutor for WASSCE, BECE, IGCSE, A Level or IB subjects, and who value lesson recordings and in-platform payment by mobile money. It also suits diaspora and international learners of Twi or Ewe, and students preparing for the SAT, TOEFL or French TCF and TEF exams. Schools and academies can manage students through the administrator account.

It is less suited to learners who want to book on a phone right away, since the site steers users to a computer, or to spontaneous same-day help, since lessons must be paid a day ahead.
