TutorOcean

Tap a star to rate

TutorOcean is a global online tutoring marketplace. The company's own description calls TutorOcean.com its "global tutoring marketplace where we help students gain knowledge, learn new skills and achieve their academic inspirations", and the site says it has vetted tutors "for every level and budget", from math homework help and language learning to university prep tests and music lessons. Students search for tutors by subject, language, price and availability, message them, book and pay online, and meet in TutorOcean's interactive online classroom. Each tutor sets their own rate and hours. Next to the human tutors, the site offers an AI Tutor for quick answers. The marketplace is the consumer face of a company that also sells tutoring software to universities, schools and employers.

How it works for students

The home page sets out three steps. Find an online tutor: the site says its tutors cover all subjects and levels. Book online sessions at any time, scheduling via desktop or mobile. Join the online classroom, where the student can share a course syllabus and build a plan with the tutor. The FAQ fills in the process: search for a tutor in the subject, open the tutor's profile, message the tutor, and once a time is agreed, book the session and pay for it online.

The FAQ is candid about response times. Tutors typically respond within a few hours, but it depends on their availability and time zone, so TutorOcean recommends messaging at least 3 to 5 tutors at a time and checking each tutor's time zone. Students who would rather not search can fill in a Request a Tutor form, and the customer success team will match them with a tutor who fits their budget and learning style. The menu offers the same for parents, with separate searches for K-12 tutors and university tutors.

Online tutoring is available 24/7, the FAQ says, while individual tutor availability varies with time zone and location, and students can search by availability to find a slot. The platform also hosts a Questions & Answers section where students ask questions and get answers from experts, and it sells learning gift cards.

The online classroom

TutorOcean describes its classroom as secure and all-inclusive, featuring real-time video, whiteboard, chat, file sharing, a coding editor, recording, and more. The FAQ sets out the system requirements: an up-to-date Google Chrome (preferred) or Firefox browser, a laptop or desktop with a webcam, headphones or earbuds with a microphone, and a good broadband connection, wired if possible. It also says the digital classroom does not currently work on mobile devices, iPads or tablets, though a mobile version is in progress. Scheduling works from a phone; the lesson itself needs a computer.

The AI side

The home page headline is "24/7 Study Help Made Easy", split between an AI Tutor for quick answers and human tutors "for Deep Understanding and Motivation." The AI Tutor is pitched as combining human tutoring expertise with AI, and the AI Copilot for teaching helps tutors with planning, grading and personalizing lessons.

Subjects

The subject menu is wide. Popular subjects include biology, business, chemistry, computer science, economics, reading and science. Math help runs from algebra, geometry and trigonometry to calculus, statistics and physics. Languages include Chinese, English, French, Spanish, Japanese and German, plus TOEFL. Test prep covers the ACT, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT and SAT, and university application prep. Programming covers C++/C, HTML, Java, JavaScript, Python, machine learning, PHP and R. Business covers accounting, Microsoft Excel, finance and marketing, and hobbies include chess, parenting and lessons on flute, guitar, piano, trumpet and violin. Students can also browse tutors by university, from the University of Toronto and Waterloo to UC Berkeley, Cambridge and Melbourne, and by country, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, India and Australia. A form lets students request new subjects.

Prices, payment and refunds

TutorOcean publishes no price list, because tutors set their own rates. Its FAQ answer on cost reads: "Setting up your student account is free. The cost of online tutoring varies depending on the tutor and the subject being taught." Students compare rates on profiles and pay as they go, and the site says they can "save with our package deals offered by private tutors."

Payment is taken online by credit card or gift card. Payments are held 24 hours before a session and processed 48 hours after it ends; for a session booked with less than 24 hours' notice, payment is held at the time of the booking request. A student can cancel up to 24 hours before the session; a later cancellation may be charged. TutorOcean also offers a satisfaction guarantee: a student who is not satisfied can request a refund within 24 hours of the session.

Tutors

According to the FAQ, tutors come from a variety of backgrounds: "Many tutors are certified teachers, while others have extensive experience in their subject area." Students see vetted profiles with ratings before choosing. Featured profiles on the home page give a feel for the pool: a chemistry, biology, anatomy, CASPER and MCAT tutor who is a medical resident with 10 years of experience; a math, calculus and statistics tutor who lists UBC, SFU, TRU, BCIT, UVIC and Langara; a chemistry tutor for university and high school. The home page headline promises trusted online tutors from top universities. For tutors, the Teach section explains how to get paid teaching from home and stresses that they set their own rate and hours.

Reviews on the home page come from students: help with pre-calculus at university level, linear algebra and matrices, chemistry and isomers, direction on papers, and a college essay revision on Greek mythology.

Beyond the marketplace

The company's Solutions menu lists a Higher-Ed academic support platform for universities and colleges, a K-12 offer for schools and districts, corporate employee benefits, tutoring management software and a white-label tutoring platform. Those are separate products; the marketplace is where an individual learner starts.

Who it suits

TutorOcean suits students who want to choose their own tutor from a large international pool, compare prices and availability, and pay per session, with a refund window if a session goes badly. It is strongest for university and high school coursework, test prep for North American admissions exams, programming and languages, and its time-zone spread helps students who need help late in the day. Students who do not want to search can ask the team to match them, and the AI Tutor covers quick questions between sessions.

It suits less well a learner who only has a phone or tablet, since the classroom needs a laptop or desktop, or a family that wants one company to plan and run a structured program: each tutor works independently and sets their own approach.
