TutorLyft
Tap a star to rate
TutorLyft is a Canadian tutoring platform that lists vetted private tutors for one-to-one lessons, online or in person across Canada. Students and parents browse tutor profiles and introductory videos, book a free phone consultation with the tutor they like, and then schedule paid sessions directly on that tutor's profile. Each tutor sets an hourly rate, and the FAQ puts the range at $40 to $100 an hour depending on experience. There is no subscription and no fee to use the platform. It is a learner product, built for students from elementary school through university and adults, and for the parents booking on their behalf.
How it works
The home page sets out three steps. First, find a tutor for one-to-one private tutoring by browsing profiles and watching introductory videos. Second, book a free consultation: "Your tutor will give you a call to discuss goals and ensure a great fit." Third, book lessons that fit your schedule: after the consultation, sessions are scheduled directly on the tutor's profile, "no back-and-forth needed." The search starts from the subject and the level of study, from elementary upward.
Booking and payment happen inside the platform. A student or parent does not need an account to book a session, the FAQ says, but a free client account makes it easier to manage bookings and view upcoming sessions. Once signed in, the client portal is where students and parents manage bookings, join sessions and message tutors. Tutors have their own sign-in, which the site describes as an invite-only portal for registered TutorLyft tutors.
Prices and policies
The FAQ answers the cost question directly: tutors charge between $40 and $100 an hour per session, depending on their level of experience, and each tutor's price is shown next to their name and on their profile. Asked whether there is a subscription fee or any other charge, the FAQ answers "Absolutely not!": there are no subscription fees or initial costs, exploring and contacting tutors is free, and clients pay only for the sessions they book. The comparison table on the home page lists pay-as-you-go pricing with no subscriptions or minimum hours requirement. A blog post on the site adds that TutorLyft offers discounts on bulk tutoring packages for students who want to book multiple sessions.
Two policies cover things going wrong. The Tutor Match Guarantee says that if a client is not completely satisfied, TutorLyft will "not only refund your session but also offer the next hour of tutoring with a new tutor for free." The cancellation policy gives a full refund, no questions asked, for a session canceled at least 24 hours before the start time. Cancelling with less than 24 hours' notice, or not showing up, results in a full charge, though the FAQ says these cases are handled one by one and the company will try to find a solution fair to both sides.
Tutors and vetting
The home page promises vetted tutors and links to a page on how they are vetted. A TutorLyft blog post spells out the criteria in the company's own words: at least three years of tutoring experience, a university education and exceptional communication skills, with tutors drawn from teachers, professors and other experts in their fields. It says TutorLyft conducts thorough interviews and accepts less than 5% of those who apply. Profiles carry introductory videos meant to show each tutor's personality and teaching style, together with their availability.
The home page also lists the tutor bench by subject: 19 tutors available in math, 7 each in biology and chemistry, 6 in English, 4 each in economics and physics, 3 each in ESL, accounting and computer science, and smaller numbers in finance, Japanese, French, Canadian law, science, business, linguistics, sociology, Spanish and MCAT. The full subject list adds Chinese (Mandarin), philosophy and LSAT. Featured profiles show tutors who combine subjects, for example math with physics, economics with accounting and finance, or English with ESL and psychology.
Services and locations
Beyond regular tutoring, the services menu lists the free consultation, summer tutoring and classes, learning a new language, exam and test preparation, catch-up and remedial assistance, special education, and services for institutions. A featured item advertises live exam prep for AP Microeconomics, which the site says runs once a year each May, with 70 hours of live instruction from a Harvard-educated instructor.
In-person lessons are offered in cities across Canada. The location pages include Vancouver, Victoria, Burnaby and Surrey in British Columbia; Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge in Alberta; Toronto and much of Ontario, from Mississauga, Brampton, Markham and Vaughan to Ottawa, Kingston, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph and Windsor; Montreal; and Halifax. Online lessons are available anywhere in the country.
Free tools and resources
TutorLyft publishes a set of free tools: GPA calculators, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics and SAT score calculators, a student budget calculator, an LSAT quiz of the day, a guide to the grading system in Canada, a university comparison, and an AI Worksheet Generator for educators. There are guides for students (choosing a major, a Notion workspace, writing a personal statement, personality and career quizzes) and for parents (university prep, and a quiz on how much tutoring a child needs). The Learning Lighthouse is a monthly newsletter of study tips and education trends.
Reviews
The home page advertises verified 5-star reviews and shows a carousel of reviews marked "Verified student." Their headlines report results such as "58% to 73%", "From 60% to 90%" in one semester, and "From Low 70s to Above 80" in English, alongside comments on flexible physics support, first-year university support and career progress. These are student testimonials; the site publishes no overall satisfaction figure.
Who it suits
TutorLyft suits Canadian families and students who want to choose a vetted tutor themselves, talk to them before paying anything, and pay per session without a subscription or a prepaid block. Its subject bench is strongest in math and the sciences, with good cover for English, economics, accounting and ESL, and specialist tutors for MCAT, LSAT and Canadian law. The match guarantee and the 24-hour cancellation rule make the first booking low-risk.
It suits less well a learner who needs a subject with only one or two listed tutors, where the choice is thin, or a family that wants a fixed curriculum delivered the same way by every tutor, since each tutor plans their own lessons.
