Tuteria is a tutoring marketplace from Nigeria that connects clients with private tutors who teach online or in person around the client's area. Clients book and pay through Tuteria; tutors apply, pass a test and take up the jobs that match their subjects. The company, Tuteria, Ltd., calls itself "Africa's Most Trusted Tutoring Platform", and its tutor pages say that the majority of clients are in Nigeria. Tuteria explains its service mainly through what it asks of tutors, which is also where a client learns most about who will teach.

What clients get

The subject range is wide. The FAQ says Tuteria supports "over 200 subjects on Tuteria, from Phonics to Math, German, GMAT, IELTS, ACCA etc.", and the page groups them into academics, test prep, languages and music, which it says are its current focus while other categories are restructured. The tutor portraits on the page show how far that goes in practice: a math and English tutor, a German language tutor, a GMAT tutor, a fashion design tutor, a Yoruba language tutor, a financial analysis tutor and a swimming tutor. Testimonials add a maths and test prep tutor, a certified phonics tutor who teaches phonetics and diction in English, and a primary subjects tutor.

Lessons happen wherever the client chooses. The FAQ says "The clients decide how they'd like to have lessons," online or in person; tutors can mark on their profile that they do only one of the two, but those who do both see more clients. In-person lessons take place in the tutor's area, which is why tutors are told to cover their own transport.

Payment is up front. The page says "Clients pay ahead of commencing lessons," and the tutor is paid only after the lessons are delivered and recorded in Tuteria's system. Tuteria's tools manage the lessons in between, and the page promises tutors support "every step of the way." For a family, that means paying Tuteria rather than the tutor directly, with the platform holding the money until lessons are done.

Tuteria publishes no lesson prices for clients on its tutor pages. It does show the take-home side: each booking tells the tutor what they will earn, and Tuteria's commission comes out of the lesson price.

Who teaches and how they are vetted

Tuteria does not require a teaching qualification. The FAQ says "There are no specific certifications or teaching experience required!" and instead asks for applicants who are 18 or older with the right to work, are willing to put the student's needs first, are "Very brilliant, and have impressive academic or professional track-records," enjoy sharing knowledge, and have great communication and customer service.

The vetting is a process rather than a credential check. An applicant completes an application, adds the subjects they want to teach, takes "a quick test" in each, and describes their expertise before starting to receive tutoring jobs. Once approved, they receive job offers matched to their profile. Tutors then build a track record through client reviews. The page also promises training: tutors "Attend training webinars, collect reviews and get tips to upgrade your skills," and are invited to a tutor community on Telegram where they can reach the team directly.

The page puts numbers on the network's size: earnings made by tutors of ₦516M, 358K+ lesson hours taught, and 23,235 students impacted. It calls itself "the largest community of professional tutors."

Terms for tutors

Becoming a tutor is free: creating a profile, getting clients and using Tuteria's tools to manage lessons cost nothing. Tuteria earns by commission. The FAQ says "We typically charge 25% - 30% in commissions from each lesson booked. We do not charge any other fees." Some of the most active tutors, it says, earn "anywhere from ₦40,000 - ₦300,000 per month" depending on availability, demand for their subjects and location, and tutors cover their own data or transportation costs.

Tutors decide when and how many hours they teach, and the page promises "a constant stream of students" and payment "on time and without hassles." Payout follows delivery. Once all lessons in a booking are delivered and submitted, and if there are no pending issues with the booking, the money reaches the tutor's connected bank account 24 hours afterwards. Tutors can apply from outside Nigeria to teach online, but they must account for the time difference with mostly Nigerian clients and need a Naira-denominated Nigerian bank account to be paid.

Tutor testimonials on the page are about the experience as much as the money. One maths and test prep tutor credits "The tutor webinars and various workshops" with improving their work; the phonics tutor mentions a flexible schedule and "satisfactory remuneration," and describes learners who improved in communication skills, eloquence and confidence; Nancy, a primary subjects tutor, writes of working with Tuteria's clients "for over 3 years" and thanks the administrative team. Questions go to a tutor email address on the page.

Who it suits and who it does not

For a client in Nigeria, Tuteria suits a parent who wants a private tutor for a child in phonics, primary subjects or secondary maths and English, a student preparing for the GMAT or IELTS, a professional studying for ACCA, or an adult who wants to learn a language such as German or Yoruba, a musical skill, fashion design or even swimming. Choosing online or home lessons, and paying through the platform rather than in cash, will appeal to families who want some structure around a private arrangement.

For a tutor, it suits someone with strong subject knowledge who wants a steady flow of clients without marketing themselves, and who accepts a 25% to 30% commission in exchange. The lack of a credential requirement opens it to professionals such as accountants or engineers who have never taught in a classroom; the subject test is the filter.

It is a poorer fit for learners or tutors outside Nigeria. The client base is mostly Nigerian and payouts need a Naira-denominated Nigerian bank account. A client who wants to compare tutors' prices before signing up will not find them published, and a learner looking for a self-paced course or a certificate will not find one here: the product is private tutoring, arranged and paid through the platform.
