The Profs

Tap a star to rate

The Profs is a private tutoring company based in London that matches students with one-to-one tutors, mostly online, across school, university, admissions and professional qualifications. It is a learner product: a student or parent sends an enquiry, the company proposes a shortlist of tutors, and lessons run with the chosen expert. The company's own blog describes it as a multi award-winning tutoring company that has spent the past 10 years building "a network of elite tutors from top universities including Oxbridge," with a team that "includes academics, lecturers, and former admissions officers." The footer gives its address at Canary Wharf in London, and the home page banner says it won the King's Award for Enterprise in 2026.

What a learner gets

The subject menu is long and organized by level. School tutoring covers GCSE, IGCSE, A-level and the IB in the usual subjects (maths, the sciences, English, history, economics, psychology, politics, languages, computer science), plus 11+ and common entrance preparation. University tutoring covers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in economics, maths, law, business, medicine, finance, accounting, econometrics, statistics, physics and more, along with dissertation and academic writing help. The home page lists further subject pages including Python, SPSS, Stata, R, engineering, architecture and pharmacy, and says the company "prides itself on covering all subjects."

Admissions support is a second line of business. The menus cover school admissions (including the ISEE for US independent schools), undergraduate admissions with UCAS applications, personal statements and interview preparation, Oxbridge applications with the ESAT, LNAT, TMUA, STEP, TARA and CSAT tests, medical admissions with the UCAT, GAMSAT, HPAT, IMAT and MCAT, postgraduate and MBA admissions with the GMAT, GRE and BCL, and US admissions with the SAT, ACT, LSAT and Advanced Placement. The home page describes this service as guiding students "from course choice all the way to interview preparation." Professional qualifications form a third group: ACCA, ACA, CIMA, CFA, CISI, actuarial exams, the SQE and the LPC.

Students do not book tutors off a public marketplace. The home page invites a call "for your personalised shortlist of top tutors in your subject," and the testimonial block says "We search hundreds of tutors for you, so you don't have to!" The company's blog says matching uses its own "SmartMatch technology," weighing subject requirements, availability, learning preferences and goals, and that a Client Success Team then connects the student with the tutor and follows progress. The enquiry form asks for level, subject, university and predicted grades, and notes a 5-hour minimum spend policy.

Lessons take place online. The home page calls the company "Pioneers of online tutoring and creators of BitPaper," and the blog says lessons are hosted in secure lesson spaces. The home page also offers 24/7 support and a phone line to "Call anytime."

Tutors and vetting

Selectivity is the company's main claim. The home page says "Only 3% of tutors who apply make it onto our network." Its blog, citing a 2024 survey of the company's own tutors, says 98% hold postgraduate qualifications and 70% have at least 10 years of classroom experience, and states that every tutor is personally vetted and must hold an Enhanced DBS certificate.

The home page shows sample profiles. Dr Bianca holds a Master's and a PhD in health psychology from UCL and has lectured at UCL and Royal Holloway among others, with 2621 hours taught. Dr Amar is a CFA charterholder and former Stanford economics lecturer with over 20 years of teaching. Dr Don has over 12 years as a full-time tutor and a PhD in philosophy of maths, Dr Claire has a DPhil in biochemistry from Oxford and over 10 years of teaching, and Tormod is an anthropologist with five years of tutoring in arts and humanities. Every profile shown carries a 5.0 rating.

Results, recognition and pricing

The home page presents "three years of verified data (2023-2026)": an average grade increase of +2.0 across all levels of study, 99% of undergraduates into their first or second choice, 2 in 3 securing offers from a UK top 10 university, and a 70% Oxbridge offer rate, which it calls "4x the national average of 15%." It also says over 90% of its students achieve their target grades and get into their preferred universities. The blog adds figures it attributes to a 2025 survey of its clients: 68% of A-level students achieving an A or A*, and 92% of students overall achieving a grade improvement.

On recognition, the blog lists "Private Tutoring Provider of the Year" at the 2026 EducationInvestor Awards and the King's Award for Enterprise, which it calls "the UK's highest official business honour" and links to the company's international growth and impact on +50,000 students. Individual tutors have won categories at the National Tutoring Awards in 2022, 2024 and 2025. The blog cites a 4.9/5 Trustpilot rating, and the footer calls The Profs "The UK's highest rated tuition company since 2016 on Trustpilot." It lists membership of the FSB and the Tutors Association.

Three short testimonials sit on the home page: a parent "Eternally grateful that my son is now off to study in Cambridge next fall," a student who says that within 2 months a tutor taught more than his university professors had in a year, and a third who credits a tutor with an A* in economics.

The site publishes no hourly rates on these pages. The menu links to a pricing page, and the enquiry form states the 5-hour minimum spend; the rate itself comes with the tutor shortlist.

Who it suits and who it does not

The Profs suits families and students who want an expert matched for them and are aiming at a specific, high-stakes result: top A-level grades, an Oxbridge or medical school place, a strong personal statement, an MBA application or a professional exam such as ACCA or CFA. University students who need help with a specific module, a dissertation or statistics software are also well covered, as are graduates preparing for the GMAT, LSAT or SQE. The emphasis on postgraduate-qualified tutors and DBS checks will reassure parents of younger students.

It is less suited to a family that wants to browse tutor profiles and prices and book on its own, or that needs only an hour or two of help, given the 5-hour minimum spend. Pricing is not visible before the enquiry. The catalog leans heavily on the UK system and UK admissions, although the US admissions and US test pages show it also serves students applying to American universities. Learners looking for a self-paced course, group classes or a free resource library will not find that here: the product is one-to-one tutoring arranged by the company.
