What Sylvan Learning Is
Sylvan Learning is a personalized tutoring and test-prep service for children from kindergarten through 12th grade, delivered at local Sylvan centers and online. The site describes it as "K-12 personalized tutoring" with "in-person and online tutoring options that are tailored to your child's learning goals, needs and schedule." The About page says that for over 40 years Sylvan has helped millions of students and families, and it claims that "Sylvan is the largest private employer of certified K-12 teachers in the world." The home office is in Bedford, Texas.
Centers are independently owned and operated, which shapes much of how the service works: prices, schedules and the exact range of programs are set locally. The location finder lists a long run of centers across US and Canadian cities, a few further afield such as Abu Dhabi, and a Sylvan Online option. The About page says Sylvan has locations around the world, and the site also links to Sylvan School Services and to information on owning a Sylvan center.
How It Works
The home page sets out three steps.
- Complete the Insight Assessment. Sylvan's Insight Assessment "shows where your child stands academically, so we know exactly how to help him or her improve." Families book it by phone or through a form on any page.
- Get personalized tutoring. Local tutors, described as expert educators who understand the school's curriculum, build a personalized learning plan for the child.
- See results, which the site frames as better report cards and improved test scores.
Behind the plan is what Sylvan calls the Sylvan Method, which the About page says it developed through academic research, teaching experience and technology. The site stresses that its tutors are certified teachers, that it blends teaching with interactive technology, and that lessons adapt to the child's skill level and pace.
Sylvan also works with the child's school. The tutoring FAQ says: "We work directly with your child's teacher to make sure you see progress in our tutoring program and on their report card," and adds that tutors are familiar with local school curriculums so lessons follow what happens in class.
Tutoring Subjects
The tutoring menu covers math, reading, writing, science and foreign languages, plus online tutoring, homeschool support, Advanced Placement support, report card help and homework help.
- Math runs from early addition and subtraction to algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and pre-calculus. The math page says lessons align with school standards and that Sylvan's tutors are "experts in the 'new' ways math is taught."
- Reading and writing cover phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar and learning how to write.
- Foreign languages are Spanish and French, for reading, writing and speaking.
- Homeschool support includes customized lesson planning and one-on-one tutoring in core subjects.
- AP support offers in-depth guidance, exam strategies and custom study plans for AP subjects.
The math FAQ says Sylvan's tutors can support students with dyslexia and other learning differences, and the resource library carries a feature on individualized tutoring for children with ADHD, which says kids with ADHD "are often bright, capable learners who thrive with the right kind of support."
Test Prep, Courses and Camps
For test preparation, the menu lists SAT and ACT prep, IB prep, state test prep, GRE, GED, ACCUPLACER, ASVAB and high school placement test prep. Courses and camps include STEM camps, academic camps and study skills courses. The Sylvan app lets families discover, book and track classes, camps and parties, and keep the whole family's schedule in one place.
Prices and Payment Plans
The pricing page states that each independently owned center sets its own prices and gives typical starting points:
- Personalized Tutoring and Homework Help: $50+ per session
- ACT and SAT Group Classes: $900+ per class
- STEM and Academic Camps: $200+ per camp
The math page says math tutoring "typically starts at $49 per hour." The pricing page notes that rates could be higher or lower than these typical averages.
There are three ways to pay. A month-to-month plan has low fixed monthly payments and lets the child attend as often as needed. A prepayment option rewards an upfront, one-time payment with a discounted rate, described as the lowest tuition rates. A standard month-to-month price is built on a custom schedule agreed with the local center. Some locations offer club memberships, and a refer-a-friend offer gives both families a free week of learning.
Results and the Guarantee
Sylvan makes strong outcome claims, all on its own pages. It says that, according to independent research, students in its Personalized Tutoring programs achieve up to 3x more growth in math and reading scores than their peers, and the math page says Sylvan students typically see up to two times more growth in math scores than non-Sylvan students. The pricing and About pages both say Sylvan guarantees your child's progress, and the menu links to an Our Guarantee page with the terms.
One parent quoted on the tutoring page writes: "My child began at Sylvan two grade levels behind, and by the end of the school year, she was more confident than ever, and scoring at or above grade level." On the home page, Geoff B., whose child took the Math/Algebra Edge program, says Sylvan "has greatly improved her grades and confidence."
Free Resources
Sylvan Nation, the free resource library, offers worksheets, games and activities, and articles for parents, filtered by topic and grade. The library page counts 41 Worksheets and 77 Articles, with topics from reading and math to SAT and ACT test dates and report card help.
Who It Suits
Sylvan suits parents of K-12 students who want a structured program with a diagnostic at the start, a written plan, certified teachers and regular contact with the child's school. Families who prefer in-person sessions at a local center are well served, and those without a center nearby can use the online option. The wide test-prep list makes it a fit for teens heading to the SAT, ACT, AP exams or the GED, and the homeschool support and camps extend it beyond after-school catch-up.
The main caveat is price transparency. Because every center sets its own rates, the published figures are starting points, and families should get a local quote after the Insight Assessment before choosing a payment plan.
