What Spires Is

Spires is an online tutoring marketplace where students post what they need and vetted tutors bid to teach them. The home page puts it simply: "Spires is a marketplace that lets you find professional tutors to suit your budget. Have, record and pay for classes online." It is run by SOTC Limited, registered in England and Wales, and its subject menus follow the British system closely, from Key Stage 1 to A-Levels and Oxbridge admissions, while also covering the IB, US college admissions and international exams.

The headline claim on the home page is "81% of our students get grade increases!" That is the company's own figure, and the site does not say how it was measured.

How It Works for Students

The home page lays out four steps.

  1. Find a tutor. The student clicks Find A Tutor and describes the help they need; the site says "The more information the better." Spires then instantly alerts top tutors with the job request.
  2. Receive bids. Qualified tutors bid to teach the student, which the site says brings "competitive offers, saving time and money on quality tutoring."
  3. Hire. The student browses the bidding tutors' profiles, compares tuition rates and reads real student reviews, and can contact tutors by text, phone or video before choosing.
  4. Have classes. Scheduling is flexible, and "All lessons are recorded so you can review anytime." Payments are made through Stripe.

The bidding step is what sets Spires apart. Instead of scrolling a directory, the student writes one request and lets interested tutors come forward with a price. Recording every lesson is the other notable feature: a student revising for an exam can go back to the explanation of a hard topic instead of booking a repeat session.

Who Teaches

Spires says it "only works with professional online tutors and experienced university-level tutors from top universities and institutions," and that it accepts only the top 4% of those who apply. The tutor application has three stages: an application covering qualifications, experience and self-employment status; an interview with a mock tutorial on the platform to check online setup, subject knowledge and teaching style; and onboarding with references, a background check and payment details.

The home page shows a sample of tutors with their qualifications and hours taught. The list includes a tutor with a doctorate from the UCL Institute of Education and 13540 hours taught, an MSc Mathematics graduate of King's College London with 9820 hours, a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants teaching ACCA, ICAEW, ICAS and CIMA students, and a medicine graduate of the University of Sydney who tutors MCAT and GAMSAT. Every tutor shown carries a 5.0 rating. The home page presents verified student reviews and links to the company's Trustpilot page.

The tutoring jobs page says Spires offers tutoring in "many hundreds of different academic subjects."

Prices

Spires does not set lesson prices. Tutors set their own rates when they bid, so the price depends on the subject, the level and the tutor. The tutoring jobs page gives one benchmark: "Average tutor pay is £40/$53/€45 per hour." That is what tutors earn on average, not necessarily what a student pays. The site also has a Pricing page and a Tutor Prices menu link for students who want to compare.

Teaching on Spires

For tutors, Spires describes itself as a platform "built by tutors for tutors." The jobs page lists fast payments ("Set your own rates and get paid weekly through our automated system"), a supportive team from onboarding to day-to-day tutoring, and an all-in-one platform. The home page adds 24/7 support for tutors on tech and administrative questions. Live chat support is available to both students and tutors.

Spires names its high-demand subjects as the IB Diploma, computer science, finance and accounting, STEM, economics and business studies, engineering, law, medicine and psychology, and says applicants in these areas have a higher chance of an interview invitation. Tutor stories on the page include an engineering tutor who turned a side job into a career, a former solicitor who built a client base, and a French and Spanish tutor who has taught on Spires since 2021.

Who It Suits

Spires suits students and parents in the British system who want a well-qualified specialist, especially for GCSE, A-Level, IB or admissions tests such as the 11+, UCAT or Oxbridge entrance exams. University students and professionals preparing for ACCA, CFA, SQE or medical exams will find tutors for those exams listed by name, and recorded lessons are a real asset when revising for those exams.

The bidding model suits learners who like to compare tutors and prices before committing. Those who would rather be matched with one tutor straight away may find it slower, and because rates are set tutor by tutor, the price of a specialist in a niche professional exam can sit well above the average. Reading the reviews and qualifications of each bidder is the way to judge whether the rate is worth it.
