What Özel Ders Alanı is
Özel Ders Alanı ("private lesson area" in Turkish) is a Turkish-language marketplace that connects people looking for private lessons with the teachers who give them. The home page headline reads "ALANINDA UZMAN 117.120 EĞİTMEN" (117,120 expert instructors), and the site says that with "117.120'den fazla öğretmen ve 1 milyondan fazla öğrenci" (more than 117,120 teachers and more than 1 million students) it is one of Turkey's largest education technology platforms. It describes itself as the portal that brings together "Türkiye geneli" (across Turkey) everyone who wants private lessons with the instructors who give them. Lessons can be face-to-face or online, and the subject range covers school support, exam preparation, university courses, languages, music, sports and software. The address in the footer is Yıldız Teknopark in Esenler, Istanbul.
What students can find
The site lists teachers in 250+ categories, from mathematics and science to primary school support, reading and writing, preschool, special education, yoga and swimming, every sport, musical instruments, school subjects, exam preparation and university courses. Elsewhere it mentions 350 categories. The home page shows how deep the larger subjects run: 39,633 mathematics teachers, 22,202 for primary school support, 21,765 for English, 17,574 for Turkish, 11,048 for science, 4,905 for physics, 2,866 for German, 1,684 for piano and 160 for statistics. Teacher cards show subjects such as IELTS, TOEFL and the Turkish YDS and YÖKDİL language exams, education coaching, speed reading, dyslexia support, civil and mechanical engineering courses, SQL and cyber security.
On the online lessons page, the site says the bulk of online requests come from university students and students preparing for the AYT and TYT university entrance exams, with high school students, LGS candidates (the high school entrance exam) and middle schoolers also asking. The most requested online subjects by group are English, German, Arabic and software for adults; statistics, law, differential equations, linear algebra and software for university students; and mathematics, English, Turkish and chemistry for AYT, TYT and high school students.
How finding a teacher works
A student picks a subject and location, filters the results and compares profiles. A profile shows the subjects and places a teacher covers, their university and department, a detailed experience section, how they have run lessons before, what they offer students, years of experience, academic work, a promo video and the hourly rate. The online lessons list also shows each teacher's active students and lessons taught, for example "116 Aktif Öğrenci - 6.292 Ders" on one English tutor's card, and offers filters for teachers who answer the same day or who live in the searched location.
There are two ways to get in touch. The student can send a lesson request straight to a teacher from the profile, or create a "Genel Ders Talebi" (general lesson request) describing what they need, after which the site says suitable teachers will contact them "gün içerisinde" (within the day). Creating a request is free. The two sides then talk through the terms and start lessons. The site says the lessons take place wherever both agree, that it has no physical location of its own, and that "Ders ücretinin planı, ödemesi tamamen ders verenle - ders alan arasında olmaktadır": planning and paying the lesson fee is entirely between teacher and student.
Online lessons
For online lessons, teacher and student use whichever video platform suits them; the site names Zoom, Skype, Google Hangout and Microsoft Teams, and elsewhere Adobe Connect and Webex. It explains that webcam lessons and online private lessons are the same thing, but should not be confused with formal distance education, of which they are only one part. It also notes candidly that for some age groups and some students, online lessons are not as effective as face-to-face ones. Students on the Online Akademi (online academy) can switch to another teacher if they are not happy, and teaching there with references requires at least "süper öğretmen" (super teacher) status.
Prices
Teachers set their own hourly fees, and the site promises teachers for every budget. The home page and the online lessons page both give the hourly price range as 650 TL to 5,000 TL. Sample teacher cards on the home page show math teachers at 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 TRY an hour and an engineering tutor at 2,500 TRY, while the online list shows rates such as 750 and 3,800 TL an hour. An older passage on the online lessons page still gives a typical range of 100 TL to 500 TL and up, so the current profile rates are the better guide.
For teachers
Creating a teacher profile is free. Teachers set their own fee, subjects and locations, teach online or face to face, and answer both requests sent to them and the general requests on the board. The site's pitch is that teachers can give "tamamen bağımsız" (completely independent) lessons, "herhangi bir aracı kuruma komisyon ödemeden" (without paying commission to any intermediary). It lists free support "7/24", a teacher panel for managing lessons, reviews and income, messaging and material sharing with students, consulting, and a technical support team. Profiles are approved before students can contact the teacher. The site claims "Tüm iller, ilçeler, dersler, branşlarda ozeldersalani.com arama motorlarında en iyi sonuca sahiptir": that it ranks best in search engines across all provinces, districts and subjects, and that tens of thousands of people visit every day. It also says "her ay binlerce öğretmen" (thousands of teachers every month) join. The footer also links to pages on rising in search results ("Arama Sonuçlarında Yükselme"), distance sales and refund terms, and the menu has a corporate training section.
Reviews
The home page reports 76,132 approved five-star member reviews across its teachers, and the online lessons page reports 67,594 five-star reviews for its 98,391 online teachers. Featured reviews are in Turkish. One parent writes that during the lessons they saw "belirgin bir gelişme" (a clear improvement) in their child's mathematics, crediting the systematic approach and regular tracking of gaps. A student thanks a YKS mentor teacher for her place at medical school, praising his "Disiplinli ve kademeli ders çalışmak teknikleri" (disciplined, step-by-step study techniques).
Who it suits
Özel Ders Alanı suits Turkish-speaking families and students who want to compare many tutors on price, reviews and experience and deal with the teacher directly: LGS, TYT and AYT candidates, university students stuck on statistics or engineering courses, adults learning English, German or Arabic, and anyone after music or sports lessons. Teachers who want to find students without paying commission on lessons are its other half. Because payment and terms are agreed privately, families should settle fees, cancellation and lesson plans with the teacher before starting.
