Learnmate is an Australian marketplace for private tutoring and coaching. Families and adult learners search tutor profiles, message tutors for free, and book lessons online or in person, paying per lesson through the platform. The homepage headline is "Hire Australia's best tutors online & near you," and its FAQ describes the service as "an online marketplace that connects families and students with 700+ independent tutors and coaches across 110+ subjects." The online tutors page calls Learnmate "Australia's leading online tutoring marketplace," which is the company's own description of itself.

The site gives several scale figures. The homepage invites visitors to "Join 10,000+ students tutored on Learnmate" and "Pick from over 750 amazing tutors across Australia," claims "Over 170,000 hours taught," and shows a Google rating of 4.8 from 363+ reviews. A section titled "A Decade of Impact in Education" says the company has supported thousands of students, including through COVID-19.

How it works for families

The process is self-directed. A family searches by subject, filters by budget, location, qualified-teacher status and experience, compares profiles, reviews and rates, and messages tutors "free before booking." From a tutor's profile, the family can either message the tutor and ask them to schedule lessons or click "Request lesson" to send a preferred day, time and requirements. Once the tutor schedules a lesson, it appears in the family's Learnmate calendar. The online tutors page says "Most students are able to find a tutor and start lessons within 24–48 hours," and contrasts the model with "app-based platforms that match students algorithmically or manually": on Learnmate, students "read real profiles and choose."

Families who prefer to be approached can post on the Jobs Board, where tutors respond. Individual tutors decide whether they teach online, in person or both; the location filter finds in-person tutors nearby, while an online search opens up tutors across Australia. For a first lesson, the FAQ recommends starting online for scheduling flexibility.

Subjects and curricula

The FAQ lists the range: school subjects (English, maths, science, chemistry, physics, biology); business and humanities (economics, accounting, business management, legal studies, psychology, history); test preparation ("ATAR maximisation, UCAT, GAMSAT, admissions tests and interview preparation"); languages (French, Spanish, German, Mandarin, Japanese, Italian, Indonesian and more); music (piano, guitar, violin, cello, drums, voice, music theory and AMEB exam preparation); technology (coding, AI, web and app development, data science); and professional development (business, life and executive coaching). Curriculum pages cover VCE, HSC, IB, QCE, WACE, SACE and UCAT, and the site also names TCE, NAPLAN preparation and primary school. Adults are welcome: the tutor page mentions adult learners picking up a language, an instrument or skills such as AI prompting, coding or public speaking.

The site also offers free resources, including ATAR calculators, a study timetable and guides.

Tutors and safety

Tutors must meet one of three bars, according to the registration page: high school graduates "with an ATAR of 97 or higher (or overseas equivalent)," qualified teachers, professional tutors or coaches, or people with 1+ year of tutoring experience, a relevant qualification or mastery of the skill. They also need a strong grasp of English and must commit to at least 3 hours a week. The FAQ says every tutor passes an application review, and that "all tutors working with students under 18 are required to hold a current Working with Children Check"; a WWCC badge on a profile means Learnmate has verified it directly. The tutor community, per the FAQ, includes VIT-registered teachers, 99+ ATAR graduates and Premier's Award recipients, university students in medicine, law and engineering, industry professionals and UCAT 99th percentilers. Profiles on the homepage include a VCE English teacher with 38 years of teaching experience and a qualified primary teacher with over 25 years.

Tutors move through account tiers. "Most tutors start on Learnmate's Bronze account tier" and progress to Silver, Gold and Pro "by taking on students, completing lessons and receiving reviews," with qualified teachers starting on Silver. "The higher your account tier, the less you pay and the more visibility your profile has on Learnmate!" Tutors set their own rates and hours, get training modules and support, and are paid automatically for completed lessons; one tutor quote mentions being paid weekly. The FAQ says tutors keep 70–77% of their earnings, compared with agencies that, it says, keep 40–65%.

Prices and terms

Tutors set their own rates. The homepage says lessons start "From just $30 /hr (+ GST)," and an FAQ answer gives the 2025 averages on Learnmate: primary $42/hr, Years 7–10 $57/hr, Years 11–12 $68/hr, and $64/hr overall. The online tutors page puts the 2025 platform average at $65/hr, which it calls significantly below the $80 to $120/hr base rate most tutoring agencies charge, and the homepage claims savings of "up to 50%" against agencies, which it says start from $85 an hour. Optional prepaid packages are available for extra savings.

Payment is cashless. The FAQ says the family's card "is charged securely via Stripe 24 hours after each lesson, so there's nothing to prepay," and cash and direct transfers are not accepted. There are "no lock-in contracts, no minimum lessons," and the "100% Good Fit Guarantee" lets families switch tutors anytime or pause lessons without penalty. Free first lessons are up to the tutor: "Many tutors also offer a free first lesson or discounted trial; check individual tutor profiles for their policies."

Results and what families say

The homepage cites its own research that "70% of students who achieve ATARs of 99+ engage one or more tutors." On how often to have lessons, it refers to Evidence for Learning research, and the online tutors page says that "Evidence for Learning found tutoring delivers an average of five months of additional learning progress regardless of delivery mode."

Family reviews on the homepage include "We found the right tutor for our daughter, and it goes really well. Learnmate makes everything easier," and "Our son had the first introductory lesson with Gauravi for Chemistry and UCAT preparation. and we found her to be precise and supportive."

Who it suits and who it does not

Learnmate suits Australian families who want to choose a tutor themselves from detailed profiles, compare prices openly and pay per lesson without a contract, whether for primary school, NAPLAN, final-year school exams in any state, UCAT or a music grade. Students outside the big cities can reach the full national pool online. Adults learning a language, an instrument, coding or AI skills, or looking for a business or life coach, can use the same marketplace.

It is less suited to families who want someone else to pick the tutor for them, or who need help on demand at any hour, since each tutor sets their own availability. The pricing is in Australian dollars plus GST and the curricula are Australian, so it is built for learners in Australia.
