Forte
Tap a star to rate
Forte is an online platform for live, one-on-one music lessons over video. The homepage sums it up as "Live, one-on-one online music lessons for anyone, anywhere." It serves two groups: learners (and parents of young learners) looking for a private music teacher, and music teachers who want to move their existing studio online or find new students. Its main pitch is a video platform built for music rather than for meetings, paired with a matching survey that suggests teachers instead of leaving the learner to scroll through a directory.
The homepage announces "Virtu.Academy & Forte have joined forces!" and the footer reads "© Copyright 2026 Virtu.Academy, All Rights reserved," so the service now runs under the Virtu.Academy name while keeping the Forte brand and the fortelessons.com address.
The Learning Experience
Getting started takes three steps. First, the learner answers "a 6-question survey that will cover your skill level, goals, genre preferences, and demographics," which the site says is used to "intentionally connect you with teachers who align with your skill level, your musical goals and aspirations, and your budget." Second, the learner reads about their teacher matches; the FAQ says "We will recommend the top five teachers for you based on your preferences," and adds that you "can explore more teachers as well!" The site frames this as a fix for being asked "to scroll through hundreds of qualified teachers who may or may not meet your specific needs." The learner can "schedule a Trial Lesson with as many teachers as you'd like" before choosing one. Third, they book ongoing lessons on their own schedule and meet the teacher on Forte's lesson platform.
No experience is required: the FAQ says "Beginners and experts alike are all welcome here." Switching is easy too: "You can change to a new teacher at any time with ease. No strings attached!"
The homepage lists what it calls "Personalized Matching," "Lessons Anytime, Anywhere," "Built-For-Music Video" and "100% Online." It argues for live teaching over recorded courses: "you're more likely to absorb information, build technique, and reach your goals than with recorded videos."
After each lesson, learners keep their material: "all your progress, resources, recorded video sessions, and learning materials can be accessed in your account at any time!" Student reviews on the homepage back this up. Donna E. writes: "My teacher is amazing! After my lessons, I look forward to practicing what we discuss and my playing has improved tremendously since starting with her a year ago." Carolyn W. writes: "Forte provides notes and recordings so I can review the lessons which reinforces my understanding of assignments." Adrienne N., a parent, writes: "My daughter's violin instructor is awesome. She's very engaging and personable."
Instruments and Subjects
The homepage heading reads "Forte offers lessons for 41 instruments," and the list includes more than instruments in the strict sense. It runs from accordion, bagpipes and banjo through baroque bassoon, baroque flute, baroque oboe and baroque violin, bass and bass guitar, bassoon, cello, clarinet, drum set, euphonium, flute, guitar, harp, harmonica, harpsichord, horn, mandolin, oboe, pan flute, percussion, piano, recorder, saxophone, sitar, synthesizer, trombone, trumpet, tuba, ukulele, viola, viola da gamba, violin and voice. It also covers composition, music theory, songwriting, and production and engineering. The site adds: "Don't see the instrument you want to learn? Reach out to us! Chances are good that we teach that, too."
Audio and Video Design
Forte's main technical claim is Forte Pure Audio, described as "the highest audio resolution available so the most human and expressive aspects of music making, like tone color, dynamics, articulation, and musical nuance, are no longer sacrificed, just because your lesson is online." The homepage says the platform is "built for learning and playing music, not for business meetings," and offers audio samples comparing it with "other popular meeting platforms."
On video, the site highlights a "simple visual interface" with "dual camera setup and in-screen documents," and the teacher page mentions an "in-screen shared notebook." Teachers can record lessons and share notes and resources inside the platform.
Teacher testimonials focus on sound. Gabriel Lee, violinist and managing director of the SEA Music Academy Online in Singapore, writes that Forte has "the audio quality prioritized over the video quality." Carlos Vargas of Boston Conservatory at Berklee writes: "The main thing is I could hear everything the students were doing," and "I could hear nuances, the use of pedal, which I struggle to hear in Zoom lessons depending on the type of piano they have." Richard Bosworth DM of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music describes using "multiple cameras, auxiliary mics, mixers, and various screen-sharing activities." Dennis Frehse of Senzoku Gakuen College of Music writes: "With Forte, you log in and you are ready to go."
Teacher-Facing Features
Teachers have two routes. Forte Direct lets a teacher "Invite your existing students to take lessons with you on Forte," with access to "our simple studio management tools and industry-leading audio quality." Forte Connect lets a teacher "Get matched with new students and grow your online studio," with matches "based on student age, skill level, musical aspiration, genre interests, and more."
Setting up means designing a teacher profile, setting "your teaching preferences and rates," and showcasing "your skills, experience, student reviews, and qualifications." Teachers can "Teach one instrument or many!" On Forte Connect, "your profile will be shown to the types of prospective students you most like to teach so you're more likely to be paired with a student who is perfect for a long-term teaching relationship!" Inside the platform, teachers can "Share resources, record lessons, share lesson notes, and manage scheduling, billing, and more."
The teacher page has a section titled "Choose the Forte membership that's right for you" and says "You can get started for free." It does not list the paid membership tiers or their prices, so a teacher sees the options during sign-up. Hilary Travers, a teacher in Australia, adds a note on service: "The Forte team has responded with amazing promptness and helpfulness."
Pricing and Guarantees
For learners, the FAQ answers the cost question directly: "Trial Lessons start as low as $13 for 30 minutes! Lesson and Trial Lesson fees vary by teacher, as they set their rates. You'll see each teacher's hourly rate and the processing fee before you book with them." So there is no single price list; each teacher sets a rate, and a processing fee is shown on top before booking.
A limited-time offer reads: "Complete a Trial Lesson, and you'll automatically get $20 of account credit that will be applied toward your second lesson." Forte also promises a money-back guarantee on the match: "Our matching expertise will ensure you find the right teacher or your money back," and "match with your ideal teacher or your money back."
Scale and Partners
The homepage and teacher page both list "94 countries with Forte users," "38,034 students on Forte," and "337,266 lessons taught on Forte," with the headline "Trusted by over 38,000 students worldwide." Forte also names Sweetwater as "our exclusive instrument retailer" for learners who need an instrument, sells gift cards, and has a For Schools section in its menu. Contact is through a Help Center and the address info@fortelessons.com.
Who It Suits
Forte suits learners who want a live private teacher rather than recorded lessons, and who would rather be matched to a short list than browse hundreds of profiles. The trial lessons, the $20 credit toward a second lesson and the money-back match guarantee make it easy to try several teachers. It fits acoustic players for whom sound detail matters (piano pedaling, string tone, dynamics), as well as learners of voice, theory, composition, songwriting or production. Parents can use it for children, as the violin testimonial shows.
For teachers, it suits a private instructor who wants one place for lessons, recordings, notes, scheduling and billing, either with current students through Forte Direct or with new ones through Forte Connect.
It suits less well a learner who wants a fixed, published price list before signing up, since rates vary by teacher and a processing fee is added, or one who prefers a self-paced video course over scheduled live lessons.
