What Alchemy Tuition is

Alchemy Tuition is an Australian private tutoring company that matches school students from Kindergarten to Year 12 with a hand-selected tutor, who then teaches them one-on-one either online or at home. The homepage says that for more than 15 years it has been providing tutoring for K-12 students across Australia, and describes itself as the highest rated private tutoring in Australia for K-12 students, pointing to a 5 star rating from 5000+ verified reviews on Google and Facebook. The business is run by Elite Education Australia Pty Ltd, with an office address in Sydney.

It is a service for parents rather than a platform where families browse tutor profiles. Alchemy picks the tutor. The online tutoring page says families do not need to scroll through tutor profiles: Alchemy chooses a tutor for the child based on their needs and arranges everything.

The founder, Nic, tells the company's origin on the homepage: he struggled in early high school, a young university student tutoring him believed in him, and he went "from basically failing 8th grade to topping my HSC year." The model that came out of that is matching students with young, passionate tutors who act as mentors as well as subject teachers.

How matching and booking work

A parent fills in a booking form that the site says takes under 3 minutes, and Alchemy promises to have a tutor lined up within 48 hours. One of its education experts calls to learn more about the student, then matches them with a tutor "based on their year level, subject requirements, learning style, personality and academic goals." The first lesson is confirmed by SMS and email, and the family receives the tutor's profile before it starts. A callback can be requested instead of booking straight away.

Online and in-home lessons

Online lessons take place in Alchemy's custom-built online classroom. The FAQ describes a secure virtual classroom where student and tutor talk in real time with video, audio, screen sharing and an interactive whiteboard. It runs in the browser, so students join from a computer or tablet without installing anything; they need a reliable internet connection, a microphone and a webcam. Online lessons are available 7 days a week, 7am to 8pm, and the page says students also get access to a far greater network of Alchemy tutors than they would locally.

In-home lessons send the tutor to the family's house before or after school or on weekends. The contact section lists all suburbs of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth and the Gold Coast for home visits, with online tutoring everywhere else.

What students study

Primary school tutoring covers all grades and subjects and, the homepage says, aligns with the national curriculum standards. The primary tutors are "specifically chosen and trained to work with younger students and impart a life-long love of learning." High school tutoring covers all subjects up to Year 12 across all state curriculums, including the HSC, VCE, QCE and the IB. English and maths are the most featured subjects, with maths tutors who have experience in every grade from K-12, and the site also names sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, literacy, history, geography, economics and languages.

Test preparation is a specialty: selective school tests, the OC test, NAPLAN, scholarship testing, ATAR and SACE preparation are all listed, and the site says tutors teach test strategies as well as content.

The lesson itself

The FAQ says the first lesson focuses on "understanding the student’s current ability, identifying strengths and learning gaps, and setting clear academic goals," after which the tutor builds a personalized learning plan. The homepage adds that tutors draw on thousands of resources from Alchemy's resource center, and the online page promises "No boring software or workbooks" with each lesson customized to the child.

Families choose the lesson length with their tutor. The pricing section says most families do well with 1 hour for primary school students and 1.5 hours for high school and selective school students, and that many Year 11 and 12 families extend sessions to 2 hours or add lessons. Alchemy encourages weekly lessons for consistency, with more sessions per week for senior students or during exam periods.

Progress reporting

Parents receive feedback by email from the tutor after every lesson, covering what was taught and how the child responded. The online tutoring page adds a detailed progress report every 10 lessons that families can share with the child's school teachers, and the homepage mentions a comprehensive report each term on current strengths and weaknesses.

Who the tutors are

Alchemy says it has state ranked tutors, school duxes, school captains and tutors who achieved 99+ ATARs. Every tutor must have completed their schooling in Australia, show proven results in the subject (the site gives a band 6 in the HSC, VCE or QCE as an example, or study at university level), and pass a content exam. Tutors range from high-achieving university students to retired teachers, and all go through Alchemy's training and mentorship program.

On safety, the homepage describes Alchemy as a child-safe organization and says every tutor passes a triple check: a face-to-face interview, double reference checks, and a Working with Children Check that the company verifies itself before the first session. The site also runs parent-voted tutor of the month profiles.

Price, payment and guarantees

Alchemy publishes its prices. One-on-one tuition costs $59 per hour lesson online and $89 per hour lesson in the home. The site says there are no contracts, prepayments or hidden fees, and that "the price you see above is what you will pay." Payment details are stored and the card is charged 24 hours after each lesson. Lessons can be rescheduled with 24 hours' notice, there is no charge for a missed lesson if the tutor gets at least 24 hours' notice, and families can cancel anytime.

The first lesson is covered by what the site calls a 100% happiness guarantee: if the family is not happy with the tutor after the first lesson, there is no charge. Office hours for phone support run Monday to Friday 9am to 9pm and weekends 9am to 5pm AEST, and families can also email or text.

The homepage also notes that every lesson helps fund the company's training courses for teachers in Tanzania.

Who it suits

Alchemy Tuition suits Australian parents who want someone else to find a well-matched tutor quickly, for a primary child who needs foundations or a challenge, a high school student working through the HSC, VCE, QCE or IB, or a child preparing for selective school, OC or NAPLAN tests. The online option at $59 an hour suits families outside the home-visit cities or with tight schedules, and the in-home option suits those who want a tutor at the kitchen table.

It is a one-on-one service, so families looking for group classes or a self-paced course will not find them here, and because Alchemy chooses the tutor, parents who want to pick from a list of profiles themselves may prefer a different model.
