Berlitz is a language school that teaches through live instructors, online and in its own language centers. The US home page describes "Online Language Classes for Individuals, Corporations, and Government", all "Powered by The Berlitz Method", and says the company has helped learners "For more than 145 years". It offers "more than 50 languages", with English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Japanese featured on the home page, and the enrollment form adds Arabic, Russian, Mandarin, Portuguese, Korean and Dutch. The site is run by Berlitz Corporation and has country sections, including the United States, Switzerland and Romania.

The Berlitz Method and how lessons work

Everything is built on the Berlitz Method, which the FAQ calls "a proven, immersive language learning technique where instruction is customized to your needs, giving you the confidence and skills to speak your new language right away." Lessons are taught by what the home page calls Certified Berlitz Instructors, who adapt lessons to each learner's goals, and the Romanian course page says every instructor "is a qualified native-level language expert". Cultural understanding is part of the offer too, with Cultural Skills Seminars and cultural consulting alongside the language classes. The Swiss site sums up its case in four points: the Method itself, fast results ("Spend less time on study, and more time on what matters to you most"), cultural understanding, which it calls "the closest experience you can get to actually living and working in a new country", and flexibility, with a customized program online, in person, with an instructor or through self-study.

The FAQ lists three formats: private lessons, group lessons and self-paced online options. Online classes come in private, group and on-demand formats, "delivering the same proven classroom experience from wherever you are." On the self-study side, the US menu names Berlitz Flex and Berlitz On Demand Plus, and the Swiss site describes Berlitz Flex as "online self-study + live coaching" for learners who want "Maximum freedom and flexibility". Much of the online course content is downloadable, according to the Romanian FAQ, so it can be used offline. The same page says learners can customize a timetable and pace, and that several intensive Romanian courses are available for faster progress.

Courses for adults, kids and teens

For adults, the US menu lists private language classes, group language classes, Total Immersion, Fast Track and courses for international students, who can learn American English at a U.S. Berlitz Learning Center. Private lessons are the one-on-one tutoring option, and group classes let learners practice with others. Not every language has every format: the Romanian page says only private online Romanian courses are offered at the moment.

Kids and teens have their own section, including an Online Language Summer Camp in the US and, in Switzerland, private classes for kids and teens and group English classes for that age group. The Swiss site also runs study abroad programs, test and exam preparation, and courses for expats.

Before enrolling, learners can take a free language placement test or an online trial lesson, both linked from the Swiss site, and the US site has a proficiency level test. The Swiss center pages add that staff will evaluate a learner's level on request and without commitment.

Language centers

Berlitz teaches in person as well as online. The Swiss site lists centers in Baar, Basel, Geneva, Lausanne, Lucerne, Lugano and Zurich, and the contact form adds Bern and Zug. The Geneva center sits on the Carrefour de Rive and offers French and German courses developed for expatriates and foreigners. The Basel center teaches German and Swiss German to French-speaking Swiss, expatriates and foreigners, and runs continuing education seminars in management, project management, coaching and leadership. Both center pages claim Berlitz is the only language school in their city that teaches languages "from both a social and professional point of view", and both offer private or group classes face to face, online or a mix of the two. The Romanian site lists a Berlitz center in Bucharest.

Business and government training

Companies are a large part of Berlitz's work. The FAQ says it offers corporate language training, cultural consulting, language testing and translation services, "with established collaborations with companies like Dell, FedEx, and Verizon." A Berlitz Collaborations section lets employees of partner companies find their company and reach an employee portal for language and cultural training. The home page describes developing "training and testing programs to suit your budget and objectives" for companies expanding globally or managing dispersed teams. The Swiss site adds business seminars and help with funding programs for companies.

For government and military clients, the home page says the training "meets the rigorous standards and measures required to offer GSA-rate approved programs" and that Berlitz delivers "centralized reporting for global training and testing initiatives."

Prices and enrollment

The pages show no course prices. Enrollment runs through an advisor: the US site asks learners to share their goals in a form, after which "a Berlitz Enrollment Advisor will guide you to the program that fits you best", and the Swiss site promises a personalized offer from a consultant. The forms include a question on company sponsorship and a choice of format, from online classes and online self-study plus private lessons to in-person classes, kids and teens online and summer camp.

What learners say

The home page features short learner stories: Kei, who took English classes in person and advanced her career; Sam, who learned Spanish in Berlitz Live Online classes to work with international clients; and Anna, who took on French. A Berlitz blog post quotes a student saying, "I feel at Berlitz, you gain fluency. I think it's a lot easier than I thought. But, easier doesn't mean less effective." A Swiss learner writes that the instructors "were not only knowledgeable but also culturally sensitive."

Who it suits and who it does not

Berlitz fits learners who want a live teacher and a structured method rather than an app: adults preparing for a move, a new job or travel, expats settling into Switzerland, international students working on American English, and parents looking for classes or camps for their children. Its wide language list, private lessons and intensive formats make it a strong choice for someone with a deadline. Companies and government agencies get training, testing, cultural consulting and reporting from one provider.

The blog post on online programs is frank that live instruction costs more than a regular app. Prices come through an advisor rather than a public rate card, and some languages are offered only in certain formats, so a learner should expect a conversation before the first class.
