Superstar Teacher

Tap a star to rate

Superstar Teacher is a Singapore online learning and tuition platform for primary and secondary school students, run by Superstar Teacher Pte Ltd. Parents subscribe their child to video courses in mathematics, science, English and Chinese, from Primary 1 to Secondary 4, and the subscription adds one-to-one homework help over live chat, revision practice and progress reports. The About page says the curriculum "is meticulously crafted to align with the latest MOE syllabus," meaning Singapore's Ministry of Education, and states the goal as "exam success for every child."

The company is not shy about its standing. The About page calls it "Singapore's leading online learning platform," the home page carries the banner "Singapore's #1 in Online Learning," and the PSLE page describes it as "the pioneer of online learning in Singapore." Those are the company's own descriptions. Its stated mission is "to enable our students to attain subject mastery and ace their examinations by adopting an integrated approach to optimise their learning."

The lessons

The home page describes the lessons as concise and "designed to fit into your child's busy schedule, enabling them to grasp new concepts in just 5 minutes a day." They are recorded videos, which the PSLE page says lets students "learn from expert teachers anytime, anywhere," and a child can watch them as often as needed: a subscription includes unlimited viewing.

The catalog is sold as one title per subject and level:

  • Lower Primary: Primary 1 and Primary 2 Math and English; Primary 3 Math, English, Science and Chinese; and an Intermediate Composition course.
  • Upper Primary: Math, English, Science and Chinese for each of Primary 4, 5 and 6, plus Advanced Composition.
  • Lower Secondary: Math, English, Science and Chinese for Secondary 1 and 2, plus Lower Secondary Writing.
  • Upper Secondary: Elementary Math, Additional Math, English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Chinese for Secondary 3 and 4.

Each subject has a short statement of approach and a free demo. Primary Mathematics promises "Skills and strategy-based teaching" and "Non-routine and critical thinking concepts"; Primary Science "Inquiry-based learning" and "Impactful experiments to reinforce concepts"; Primary English "Techniques to conquer cloze passages and comprehension"; Primary Chinese "Mastery of answering techniques." At secondary level, mathematics works on "higher-order thinking and reasoning," science has a "Two-fold emphasis on both theory and calculation," English teaches students to "deconstruct and paraphrase text," and Chinese covers answering techniques and creative writing.

The course pages show how specific this gets. Primary mathematics is organized around named problem-solving methods: Number Bonds, Part-Whole Model and Guess and Check in Primary 1; Make a List and Look for Patterns in Primary 2; Working Backwards and Before and After in Primary 3; Make Supposition, Grouping and Gap Problems in Primary 4; 3-Step Guess and Check, Double "IF", Excess-and-Shortage and the Branching Method in Primary 5; and Common Friends, the Pull Down Model, Use of Equations and the Rainbow Method in the PSLE Mathematics course. Primary science runs from Classifying Things, Living and Non-living things and Life Cycles in Primary 3, through Matter, Magnets, Light and Shadow and Heat and Temperature in Primary 4 and Water and Changes of State, Cell and Electric Circuit in Primary 5, to Forces, Energy, Food Chains and Food Web, Adaptation and Environment in PSLE Science.

PSLE preparation

The PSLE page explains why the platform puts weight on the Primary School Leaving Examination: it is "the first national exam," and its results decide which secondary school a child can enroll in and which subjects they can take. The catalog includes dedicated PSLE Mathematics and PSLE Science courses, and the home page's "Ace the Exams" section promises targeted practice with "strategies and insights that boost confidence and performance."

The teachers

The home page profiles the teachers by subject. Monica Leong teaches Primary English and Mathematics, and the site calls her "Probably the first video teacher in Singapore." Stacie Phua teaches Primary Mathematics, Li-anne Sia Primary Science, Brendan Buxton Primary English, and Oh Ming Yeo Primary Science, Lower Secondary Science and Upper Secondary Physics. At secondary level, Johan Foong teaches Secondary Mathematics, Gary Ang Upper Secondary Additional Mathematics, June Foo Secondary English, Selena See Upper Secondary Chemistry, and Roy Teo Upper Secondary Biology; the site says Roy Teo holds "a PhD in Biology from University of Cambridge." The Primary and Secondary Chinese teachers' profiles are written in Chinese; the secondary teacher's profile says the teacher helped write secondary Chinese courseware in Singapore for many years and knows the ministry's latest question formats.

Homework help, practice and tracking

The second half of the product is help outside the videos. The PSLE page describes an Instant Homework Help feature through which students can reach "our team of expert mentors" when they get stuck, using a live chat interface that "allows mentors to interact and guide students." The pricing page lists it as "24/7 One-to-One Homework Help," available with a subscription.

Subscribers also get Topical Revision and Full Mock Exam Practice, physical worksheets for reinforcement (delivery included), a Study Tracker with Exam Readiness Insights, Monthly Progress Reports, and a reward scheme in which children earn stars and redeem rewards. A parent, Kelvin Chow, adds on the home page that "the mini assessment milestones incorporated within the online lessons serve as valuable checkpoints to gauge my child's understanding of the content."

Plans and prices

The pricing page sets a free trial beside a Core Subject subscription for primary or secondary. The trial needs no credit card and gives one topic of lessons and one topic of revision practice, with worksheets online only. The subscription costs "From just $53 /month," with a 0% installment plan on OCBC or UOB credit cards (terms apply), and opens unlimited viewing, unlimited practice, physical worksheets and the subscriber features above. The FAQ adds that the "Price quoted per title is a one time payment for the period of one year from date of activation."

Parents can buy online by adding titles to the cart and paying by card, or through an education consultant at selected Popular Bookstores, by phone, or by WhatsApp for current promotions. Accepted payments are Mastercard, Visa and Amex, AliPay, WeChat Pay, GrabPay, Atome, PayNow and the installment plan. The site says it does not store card details or renew subscriptions without permission. Its refund terms are strict: "All sales are final and are non-refundable." An un-activated title can be exchanged within 14 days of purchase, only for a similar-priced or higher-valued title, and administrative charges may apply.

Numbers the company publishes

The home page reports "More than 117,000 Active Learners," a "96% rating On Google & Facebook" and "46 mins avg." time spent daily. The PSLE page gives its own set: "50 000+ subscribers," a "95% rating on Google & Facebook," "1600+ lessons" and "53 mins avg." daily. The pricing page counts "600+ SUCCESS STORIES" and "5,000+ PARENTS TRUST US." A Primary 6 pupil quoted on the PSLE page, Qi Qianhao, says "The tips and ways to solve questions shared from Superstar Teacher are also better than what I get from my tuition classes."

Who it suits

Superstar Teacher suits Singapore families who want structured, syllabus-aligned support at home alongside school, and in particular parents of a child heading for the PSLE who need a clear method for problem sums and science answers. Children who learn well from short videos they can rewatch, and who will use a chat channel when stuck, get the most from it. Secondary students taking Additional Math or a separate science have dedicated titles. Since every course follows the MOE syllabus, a child on a different curriculum will find less of it relevant. The non-refundable terms make the free trial the sensible first step.
