What BYJU'S is
BYJU'S is an Indian learning company whose programs cover school students from LKG to Class 12 and aspirants for competitive exams. It is a learner product: a parent or student books a free session, picks a class and topic, and then learns through the BYJU'S app, live online classes or, in some cases, at a center. The About Us text calls BYJU'S "India's largest ed-tech company and the creator of India's most loved school learning app", says it launched in 2015, and reports 50 million registered students and 3.5 million paid subscriptions. Those are the company's own descriptions and figures.
The program range is wide. The home page groups it by age and goal: an early learning program for LKG to Class 3, the learning app and live classes for Classes 4 to 10, the Aakash BYJU'S programs for older students, and exam preparation for JEE, NEET and IAS. The page title also names UPSC and bank exams, and the registration form lists IAS, CAT, Bank Exam and GATE alongside Classes 1 to 12.
How the learning works
The core of BYJU'S is the app, BYJU'S The Learning App, which the home page describes as a personalized learning app for Classes 4 to 10 that students can use anytime, anywhere. The About Us text sets out three pillars.
Personalized learning paths. Using knowledge graphs, the program adapts to each student. It covers "over 1 lakh concepts" (100,000) with animated videos and questions, fun quizzes and flashcards. Based on each student's progress, BYJU'S builds a personal learning profile that analyzes strengths and areas to improve. Each concept is tagged at different levels of difficulty to create a smooth learning curve, and when a student makes errors, the system generates remedial material to strengthen the weak spot.
Technology-enabled learning. The company says it combines videos, engaging content and quizzes with its teachers, and lists the program's key features as interactive learning modules, visually rich content for conceptual clarity and long-term retention, and personalized programs enabled by data science.
Teachers and content. Lessons are planned with subject matter experts and teachers, using videos, interactive animations, quizzes and assessments, and the app adds analysis and recommendations matched to each student's learning style. The company credits this approach with "a student engagement of over 71 minutes a day" on the app.
The company frames all of this as individual attention at scale. The About Us text says "We believe in the power of one-to-one learning that addresses every child's learning needs", and describes BYJU'S as the student's constant learning partner. The home page sums up what it calls the BYJU'S advantage in three lines: conceptual clarity through visualization, personalized learning programs, and individual attention.
Programs by stage
- LKG to Class 3: BYJU'S Early Learn Program. Described as a "Specially crafted early learning program for young minds". The kids-learning page points parents to the Disney BYJU'S Early Learn app, with learning games, kids' learning videos and free printable worksheets. It outlines what children cover in Classes 1 to 3: core words and letter sounds, basic arithmetic, stories and poems in English, and Environmental Studies on the body, plants, animals and surroundings. The same page offers subject-wise classes such as online English classes for kids, and says its kids' resources are built by experts who understand what engages children and how they can learn without feeling burdened or bored.
- Classes 4 to 10: BYJU'S The Learning App and BYJU'S Live Classes. The home page also flags a new personalized online tutoring program built on what it calls a unique two-teacher model, and a banner advertises online live school tuitions for the 2024-25 academic year.
- Classes 8 to 10: Aakash BYJU'S Foundation Program.
- Classes 11 to 12: Aakash BYJU'S App Program.
- JEE and NEET: a "Comprehensive learning program for JEE preparation", another for NEET aspirants, and the Aakash BYJU'S Test Series.
- IAS: a personalized learning program pitched at "the leaders of tomorrow".
For school subjects, the About Us section lists Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology for CBSE and ISC students in Classes 1 to 12, and competitive exam courses for JEE, NEET and IAS.
Booking, doubt sessions and payment
Every route starts with a free session. The booking form asks for the child's name, a mobile number verified by OTP, a state and a class, then lets families choose topics, a session mode (online or offline) and a time slot. After submission, an academic counselor gets in touch to schedule a demo. BYJU'S also offers doubt sessions: a student picks a city, a center, a date and a time slot, and if no center is nearby, the site offers to schedule an online class instead. Session details are sent by WhatsApp. Separate sign-up forms let registered students download free PDFs and watch live videos.
On payment, the home page says BYJU'S offers multiple payment methods, including Internet Banking, Wallet and QR Support, with payment gateway partners using secure encryption. The pages show no prices.
What the site claims
Beyond the About Us figures, the home page reports 150+ Million downloads, a 4.7+ Star app rating, students in 1701+ Cities worldwide and "71 mins avg. time spent daily", and says it has "1000s of reviews by happy students". It describes its teachers as "India's best teachers". Short testimonials come from students and parents across India: the father of Souradip (Class 6, Kolkata) writes "My son understands Math better with BYJU'S", Suraj Peela (Class 11, Hyderabad) says BYJU'S "helped me understand the concepts through real-life examples", and Atri (Class 9, Kolkata) writes, "I can balance my studies and sports well with BYJU'S".
Who it suits
BYJU'S suits Indian families who want one provider to cover a child from kindergarten to the end of school and then into JEE, NEET or civil services preparation. Students who learn well from animated videos and frequent quizzes, and who can work in an app on their own, get the most from the personalized learning path. Families who prefer a live teacher can choose the live classes or the two-teacher tutoring program, and those near a center can book offline doubt sessions.
It suits less well a family that wants to compare prices before talking to anyone, since enrollment goes through a free session and an academic counselor. The subject list on the main page centers on CBSE and ISC students, so families following other curricula should look closely at what their class covers.
