What Kartable is
Kartable is a French online learning platform for schoolchildren, covering the official national curriculum from CE1 (the second year of primary school) through to Terminale, the final year of the general lycée. It is a learner product: a subscription that gives a child lessons, exercises, quizzes and revision sheets in every main subject, plus an AI tutor, while parents follow progress from a dashboard. The whole service is in French and built around French school programs, the brevet and the baccalauréat.
The homepage describes Kartable as "Leader du soutien scolaire en ligne depuis 2011" (leader in online tutoring since 2011) and says it has supported "Plus de 20 millions d'élèves" (more than 20 million students). Elsewhere it says the platform welcomes hundreds of thousands of students every year. One limit is stated plainly in the FAQ: Kartable covers the general track up to Terminale, and the technology and vocational sections of lycée are "pas encore disponibles" (not yet available).
Lessons, exercises and exam sections
The core of the subscription is the content library. The homepage advertises more than 1,000 short, clear summaries, lessons explained step by step, thousands of quizzes and corrected exercises, and further resources for students who want to go deeper. Courses can be downloaded as PDFs, which the site pitches as a way to work without a screen.
Kartable says 16 subjects are available. The list on the page includes mathematics, French, history, geography, physics and chemistry, life and earth sciences (SVT), economics and social sciences (SES), English, German, Spanish, philosophy, literature, moral and civic education, "Questionner le monde" for younger pupils, and the lycée specialties such as geopolitics, LLCE English and humanities, literature and philosophy.
Exercises are interactive, come at every difficulty level, are graded instantly and carry detailed corrections. Dedicated Brevet and Bac sections add revision sheets and corrected past exam papers. According to the FAQ, the content is designed and written by a team of Éducation nationale teachers under the direction of an "enseignant agrégé" (a teacher holding France's senior teaching qualification), and the same applies to the corrected exercises, methods and revision sheets. A separate block on the homepage says 200 Éducation nationale teachers design and write the learning paths. All of it is described as conforming to the official programs and the latest reforms, and a back-to-school article explains that the lycée courses, sheets and exercises were rethought, rewritten and illustrated for the 2019 reform.
The quiz page sets out Kartable's own view of quizzes and multiple-choice questions: they are not typical of what the French system grades, which values written reasoning, but they are a useful tool for memorizing a lesson and checking revision. Quizzes are organized by chapter, with examples ranging from the optics of the eye to second-degree trinomials and La Princesse de Montpensier.
Alfa, the AI tutor
Alfa is the newest feature, presented as "votre professeur particulier IA" (your AI private tutor). The site describes it as reliable and "100% conforme aux programmes officiels" (100% aligned with the official programs). It works in three ways:
- a chat where the student can ask about any lesson at any hour; Alfa adapts to the student's level, rephrases difficult ideas and gives concrete examples;
- custom lesson tests: the student photographs a lesson, Alfa writes questions to check memorization, spots weak points and lists the ideas to review first;
- practice on the teacher's own exercises: the student photographs homework, and Alfa guides step by step, asks questions, corrects mistakes and explains the method "sans jamais donner la réponse directement" (without ever giving the answer directly).
Alfa is included in every plan, but a footnote says its use is subject to a monthly limit that varies with the type of request.
Live help, private teachers and holiday courses
Beyond the self-study library, the homepage lists three services. Homework help by chat runs every evening: teachers connected online answer a student's specific question, in every subject on the program. Private teachers are available on request, billed per lesson on top of the subscription, at home or by video, with "Aucun engagement" (no commitment). During school holidays Kartable also runs online catch-up courses and revision courses for the brevet, the French bac and the baccalauréat, taught in small groups by video conference.
The platform also tracks the child. Kartable says it assesses the student's level instantly on the program's skills, updating the dashboard after each exercise, and that it is developing technology to plan a child's work automatically through a weekly skills check, goals set from the results and a work plan to reach them. The site also has sections for professionals: Éducation nationale teachers, private tutors, local authorities and companies with works councils.
Plans and prices
The homepage publishes prices. A switch at the top of the pricing block chooses between Solo (one child) and Famille (two or three children). The figures printed on the page are:
- Formule Mensuelle (monthly plan): €14.99 a month;
- Formule Année Scolaire (school-year plan): €9.99 a month, paid as one immediate payment of €109.89 for 11 months, running to 31 July 2027;
- Formule 2 Années Scolaires (two-school-year plan): €7.99 a month, paid as one immediate payment of €183.77 for 23 months, running to 31 July 2028.
Every plan includes Alfa, unlimited access to the teaching content, PDF downloads of the sheets, detailed corrections, instant assessment and the parental dashboard. The footnote says plans renew automatically and can be canceled at any time in one click. Private lessons are the only service the site says is billed on top.
Results the site reports
Kartable leans on two figures. The homepage shows "97,5% de réussite au bac" (a 97.5% bac pass rate), and the footnote compares it with 91.5% nationally, across all general tracks and before resits. It says the figure comes from a survey of 13,063 students registered on Kartable, 9,804 of whom took the general bac in 2021. The second figure is "+ 4,4 points en moyenne" (an average gain of 4.4 points), from a survey of 1,847 students registered on Kartable in 2020. Both are the company's own surveys of its users.
The app is available on the web, iOS and Android. The site gives a rating of 4.5 on the App Store and shows 4.5 out of 5 from 20265 reviews. Parent reviews on the homepage praise the clarity of the content and the dashboard; one mother writes that "Kartable est devenu un réflexe pour ma fille" (Kartable has become a reflex for my daughter).
Support and the parents' role
Pedagogical advisers answer seven days a week, by phone and e-mail, from 9am to 7pm on weekdays and from 10am to 1pm on weekends. They help parents with their child's schooling, choosing the right support and subscribing.
The parent dashboard shows each child's progress curve in real time and identifies gaps. The FAQ recommends that parents stay involved until collège, suggesting a 15-minute check each week to review the child's work and schedule. It also says a private tutor can have the child work directly on Kartable.
Who it suits
Kartable fits French-speaking families whose children follow the French national curriculum, from CE1 to Terminale on the general track. It suits a child who needs structured lessons and plenty of corrected practice, a collégien preparing the brevet, and a lycéen working toward the bac who wants corrected past papers and an AI tutor that guides rather than answers. Parents who want to see what their child is doing get a dashboard in every plan, and the two-year plan brings the monthly cost down to its lowest.
It fits less well outside that frame. Students on the technology or vocational lycée tracks are not yet covered, the content and tutors work in French, and Alfa comes with a monthly usage cap. Families who want regular one-to-one teaching should budget for private lessons, which are charged per session on top of the subscription.
