What EdPlace is

EdPlace is a UK online learning and revision app for school-age children, covering English, maths, science and 11+ from Year 1 to GCSE. Families use it at home, on the desktop website or through separate parent and student apps; teachers and tuition providers use it with their own students. Its pages describe it as "Online learning that helps your child get ahead" and say EdPlace "Matches your child's schooling and exams from year 1 to GCSE."

The company's founder, Will Paterson, explains on the About page that he started EdPlace because of his own school experience as a dyslexic pupil, and that parental support, hard work and confidence became "the backbone of our approach to learning." The stated mission is "to help millions of students achieve academic success, and beyond!"

What a child does on EdPlace

The product is built from short activities. The pricing page sums up the approach: "Short and engaging English, maths, science and 11+ activities," "automatically marked with teacher explanations," with new work "automatically assigned to advance your child at the right level and build confidence." The features page groups this into three steps:

  • Learn: practice the skills being taught at school, with instantly marked questions and teacher feedback, then test exam readiness with exam-style questions and practice papers.
  • Progress: progression tailored to each child, activities assigned automatically based on progress, and recommendations on what to practice next.
  • Achieve: points for each correct answer, badges for key milestones, and individual goals with personalized rewards.

Personalization runs on AI. The About page says EdPlace uses "AI-technology" to tailor resources to a child's needs, and the parent plans list a Basic or Advanced "AI Recommender."

The catalog follows the English school years. Maths, English and science each run through Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2), Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6) and Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9), then GCSE: Maths, English Literature, English Language, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Topic pages range from fractions, division and algebra to grammar, nouns and adverbs, and electricity or healthy living and diet in science.

Exam revision has its own sections:

  • GCSE revision: "Exam-style questions and practice papers," "Skills development specific to exam boards" and "Aligned to 9-1 grading." The site states it has no affiliation with OCR, Pearson Edexcel, AQA or Eduqas and that the questions are its own, written by its GCSE authors.
  • 11+ revision: "Early prep from Year 3 to 5," "CEM and GL aligned," with verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, maths and numerical reasoning, and English.
  • SATs revision: maths, reading comprehension and SPAG, with practice papers, help to fill gaps in primary knowledge and preparation for the Year 7 transition.

An Assess menu adds Catch-up Assessments, Termly Benchmark Assessments and Combined Core Subject Assessments.

What parents and teachers see

The parent account is the control panel. Parents can assign activities, track progress on the parent dashboard, get recommendations and set personalized rewards. The pricing page adds that "Weekly reports are provided to easily track and measure progress on a regular basis," and that assessments and practice papers produce "shareable reports." One parent, Pat Heath, writes: "Between EdPlace & my Son's school work, EdPlace is the one he ASKS to do!"

Resources are written by teachers. The About page says its "dedicated team of authors are highly qualified teachers" who build resources aligned with the UK National Curriculum and exam boards, and it introduces teachers by key stage and subject with revision tips, from KS2 English and maths teachers to KS4 science teachers and 11+ specialists. The same page says "Our expert tutors lead our online 1-1 and group tuition sessions," so live tuition is part of the wider offer as well.

The progress claim and awards

EdPlace's headline number is "150% progress achieved in English, maths and science across the academic year." The footnote explains it: students who used EdPlace materials "progressed by an average of 153% in English, maths and science over an academic year," analyzed from scores in the EdPlace database for activities taken by students managed by parent accounts between October 2018 and September 2019. It is the company's own analysis of its own users.

The site also shows National Tutoring Awards 2023 badges, with EdPlace shortlisted for Private Tutoring and a finalist for Best for Home Learning / Parents.

Who it suits and who it does not

EdPlace suits UK parents who want structured, curriculum-matched practice at home, set at the right level automatically, with a dashboard and weekly reports to see what is happening. The free account lets a family try it with one child at 5 activities a month, and the Family plan covers siblings for £24.99 a month. Children facing the 11+, SATs or GCSEs get dedicated revision sections, and the site has advice pages for homeschooling and SEND support. Schools get a free tier for up to 30 students in school hours, and tutors can run their own students on per-student plans or a branded custom setup.

The fit is narrower for families outside the English school system, since everything is organized by UK key stage, SATs, 11+ and GCSE. The app is practice and revision, so a child who needs teaching from scratch will lean on the separate tuition sessions or on school. And the progress figure is EdPlace's own measure of its users, not an independent study.
