What Codeyoung is
Codeyoung is a live online tutoring service for children built on one format: one child, one mentor, in a live class. Its homepage line is "One child. One mentor. Real attention. Clear progress." The reader it serves is a parent choosing classes for a child, not a teacher building a course or a school buying a system. The site's copyright and trademark line names Smart Owl Education Pvt Ltd. as the company behind it, and the homepage says students "have experienced 1:1 classes with Codeyoung globally."
The company grounds its pitch in research. It cites the Bloom's 2 Sigma effect, from the educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom, and summarizes it as "A 1:1 tutored student performs better than 98% of their peers." The homepage explains that students who receive one-to-one, mastery-based tutoring can reach performance gains two standard deviations above students in a traditional classroom, and that Codeyoung brings "this proven pedagogical principle to life" through three things: live 1:1 online classes, mastery-based progress tracking, and real-time feedback and guidance.
Subjects and age groups
The homepage lists six course areas: science, coding, math, English, financial literacy and robotics. The parent FAQ names five programs (math, English, science, robotics and financial literacy), and coding sits alongside them in the site menu with its own set of tracks.
Coding is the broadest catalog on the site. The tracks it names are Scratch, MIT App Inventor, web development, app development, Python, artificial intelligence, deep learning and generative AI classes for kids. Math is organized by school grade, with separate classes listed for every grade from Grade 1 to Grade 8.
The science page gives the most detail about how a subject is built. It is recommended for ages 8-14 and splits into four strands: engineering, technology and applications of science; life science (biology, ecology and genetics); physical science (matter, energy, forces and motion); and earth and space science (geology, weather, ecosystems and space). Course tabs cover ages 3-5 and ages 6-8, and the grade courses shown are each described as a "Common core aligned" curriculum:
- Grade 3 covers force, evolution, heredity and genetics, and outer space.
- Grade 4 covers energy, electricity, the human body and tectonic plates.
- Grade 5 covers matter, ecology, the structure of the universe and engineering design.
The science page lists the board curricula it supports as US Common Core, GCSE, CBSE and ICSE, and says classes cater to "multiple international board systems." Teaching methods named there include hands-on experiments, demonstrations, simulations, multimedia resources, interactive labs, inquiry-based learning and problem-solving challenges with real-world applications. For younger children, the FAQ says instructors use age-appropriate language, visuals, storytelling and hands-on activities, and scaffold the learning with concrete examples.
How the classes run
According to the FAQ, live classes typically run for one hour and are held 2-4 times a week, with flexible scheduling to fit a child's week. Each lesson is adapted by the mentor to the child's pace and style. The homepage frames progress as mastery-based: the company says it helps students "fully understand each concept before moving on."
Assessment is part of the routine. The FAQ says Codeyoung conducts periodic assessments to track each child's progress and identify areas for growth, and uses them to adjust instruction to the child's needs. Parents receive what the homepage calls "highly detailed personalized progress reports." Mentors run a continuous feedback loop that the site calls SPR and Glimpse assistance.
Getting started takes three steps on the homepage. A parent selects a course by the child's age or grade, books the free trial class (choosing a mentor and a preferred time slot), and enrolls if they like the demo. The site says a working PC and a stable internet connection are all the child needs.
Outside the lessons, the company lists a "student centric fun environment" with community events and webinars, and says hands-on practice comes from "1k+ of exercises & worksheets." It also lists "Adaptive AI based learning", described as a learning experience aided by AI.
Practice between classes
Two practice products sit next to the live classes.
The Codeyoung AfterSchool app is described as free for everyone. It targets school-level math and science, offers "20k+ quizzes & AI evaluations across all topics", and lets a student book a live class in real time when they need help. It is available for iOS and Android.
Sandbox is the company's practice platform. The homepage says it includes everything in the AfterSchool app plus coding subjects, in-depth interactive exercises, a coding workbench, a whiteboard and unlimited file storage. Full access costs $60 per year and comes free with the online courses, and Sandbox has a free trial for the first 15 days.
Prices
Codeyoung prices by the class. The homepage says courses start "as low as $22 per class", and each grade course on the science page shows "Starts @ $ 22 /class." A parent picks a learning track and checks out online. The first class is free: every page offers a "FREE trial class", also called a demo session. The site does not publish package sizes or a refund policy, so the total cost of a term depends on how many classes a week a family books.
Mentors
Mentor quality is the company's main selling point after the format itself. The homepage says "Less than 1% applicants make it through" and describes "Top 1% mentors with the patience and ability to teach kids." It calls mentors "your personal Gurus" who add a human touch to the tech-enabled side of the classes.
The science page introduces several science mentors with their qualifications and teaching hours: a graduate and two B.Sc holders (one with a B.Ed) with 1,200+ hours taught each, and a mechanical engineering graduate (B.E.) with 2,100+ hours. It describes its science mentors as "Highly qualified and certified."
Scale, ratings and recognition
The homepage says "50,000+ parents trust us" and that Codeyoung has been "consistently rated 4.5+ /5 on Google reviews", with a Trustpilot review section below. The science page counts 3,000+ students taught, 25,000+ classes taken and 350+ certified science mentors.
On accreditation, the site describes a "Globally recognized Stem accredited program", and the science page lists a "STEM.ORG accredited educational experience." Under rewards and recognitions it lists EdTech startup of the year (2023), GSV Cup finalists "Elite top 25", and Forbes India DGEMS 2023 "Select 200 Companies."
Support is by email and phone, both listed in the site footer.
Who it suits
Codeyoung suits a parent who wants a child to have a single dedicated tutor in a live class, with the lesson paced to the child and a mentor the parent picked from the trial. It fits families looking for coding beyond the basics (app development, Python, AI), for science classes mapped to Common Core, GCSE, CBSE or ICSE, or for grade-by-grade math through Grade 8. The free trial class and the free AfterSchool app let a family test the format before paying.
It suits families less well if they want a child to learn in a group with peers, since every class is one-to-one. Per-class pricing with classes 2-4 times a week adds up over a term, and the free Sandbox access only comes with a paid course. Parents who want a self-paced app with no live teacher can start with the AfterSchool app alone.
