World Instructor Training Schools

World Instructor Training Schools, or W.I.T.S., trains and certifies fitness professionals. Its three headline certifications are the Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), the Group Fitness Instructor and the Medical Fitness Specialist, and around them it sells continuing education, specialty courses and certification renewal. The homepage says the school was established in 1993 and has supported fitness professionals "through education, certification, and career development" for more than 30 years. Its pitch is practical: "Education Designed for More Than Passing an Exam," with live instruction, hands-on training and flexible formats.

The Certified Personal Trainer

The CPT is the flagship. According to its page, the program "evaluates the knowledge and practical skills required for entry-level personal training practice," and certification requires passing both written and practical exams. W.I.T.S. states that the CPT Level I certification is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), and is careful about the limits: the accreditation "applies only to the CPT Level I certification program and does not apply to W.I.T.S. as an organization, its education or training, preparatory materials, textbooks, or other credentials."

Training is optional. Candidates can register for the exams alone through a CPT Exam Only option and prepare with any materials they like, and the page adds that using W.I.T.S. resources "does not guarantee a passing score." For those who want the training, there are three paths:

  • Self-paced Online, $775.00. 24/7 access for 4 months, with lesson modules on assessment, exercise technique and program design, guided drills for coaching skills, and structured review for the written and practical exams. The package includes a voucher for both CPT exams, which the page values at $490.
  • Instructor-led Virtual LIVE, $775.00. A 5-week cohort with live lectures on Tuesdays from 6:30pm to 9:30pm ET and live skills labs on Saturdays from 1 PM to 4 PM ET. The next cohort listed starts on 2026-10-06. Sessions are recorded, and the page advertises a limited special test voucher at $350.00 (normally $490).
  • College-based Hybrid. Offered through participating colleges: live virtual lectures, skills labs in your local fitness center, and recordings of both. You register and pay the college directly, and a search tool finds a partner college by state.

The CPT curriculum covers assessing clients safely, coaching stretches and exercises with free weights, machines, tubing and bodyweight, and applying biomechanics and exercise physiology during hands-on coaching. An optional textbook, the Fitness Professional's Handbook with HKPropel Access (8th Edition), costs $109.

W.I.T.S. also publishes its 2025 CPT results: 236 people took the examination, the pass rate for the written and practical exams was 45%, the fail rate 55%, and 514 people became certified personal trainers in the calendar year. Those figures tell a reader the exam is not a formality.

Group Fitness Instructor

The Group Fitness Instructor Certification prepares people "to confidently lead group classes through effective cueing, class design, motivation strategies, and safe movement instruction," covering both technical skills and the interpersonal side of managing a group. The FAQ says it suits beginners and that graduates may teach in gyms, studios, community centers and corporate wellness programs.

Both learning paths cost $475.00. The self-paced version gives 24/7 access for 4 months and moves through group fitness principles, safety and screening, class design, choreography and movement sequencing, and cueing and motivation. The Virtual LIVE cohort runs 10 weeks, one session a week on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 PM ET, with skill labs inside the live sessions, lectures led by W.I.T.S. Master Trainers and recordings of everything. The next cohort listed starts on 2026-10-07. Certification exam eligibility is included on completion. A textbook is required and sold separately: Methods of Group Exercise Instruction, 4th Edition with online video, at $74 to $98.

The third headline certification, Medical Fitness Specialist, is described as education "for clients with health considerations" focused on "safe, informed, and practical fitness application."

Grants

Both the CPT and Group Fitness pages advertise limited grant availability for an "All Access" path, which covers all course content. The number of grants is limited and the exam voucher is sold separately.

There is a run of business courses too: club management workshops on facility design, member retention and staffing, marketing and social media courses, and Setting Prices for Profitability, which lists 2 CECs. The site's Education Network adds courses from partner organizations: instructor education in personal safety and self-defense, Niel Asher Education for rehabilitation and soft tissue work, and the Program Design Association.

Renewal and governance

Keeping a W.I.T.S. certification current involves continuing education credits (CECs), and the menus link a CPT renewal page, renewal FAQs, a CEC petition and a CPT Level 1 retest registration. A Certification Council oversees the program; its listed members include Certification Director Ashley Davidock, who the site says taught the W.I.T.S. CPT Level 1 course for ten years, alongside council members and a public member serving three-year terms.

The school's approach

The president, Jay DelVecchio, writes that W.I.T.S. has worked in higher education for 33 years, teaching fitness much as other health occupations are taught, and that "We do not have open book exams or just online learning in a canned format." He mentions internships with real-world experience and adds that "Employers love that you can perform and are more than book smart." The homepage describes partnerships with colleges and universities that bring instructor-led fitness education to local communities.

A graduate testimonial from Son Ha Chung, CPT, reads: "After 13 years in fitness, I chose W.I.T.S. to continue growing professionally."

Support

Student Services answers by phone and email, Monday to Thursday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM ET, and is closed Friday to Sunday. A contact form covers certification, enrollment, renewal, continuing education and testing, and the footer links liability insurance.

Who it suits

W.I.T.S. suits people who want a personal trainer credential with real practical testing, and who like structure: fixed cohorts, live labs and set access periods. The college route suits learners who want a campus schedule, and the exam-only option suits experienced trainers who only need the credential. Working professionals have a wide, inexpensive catalog of CEC courses for renewal and specialties such as seniors, pregnancy, chronic illness and GLP-1 clients. The published 45% pass rate is the caveat to weigh: preparation matters, and the structured paths are there for that reason.
