Health Coach Institute (HCI) is an online training school for people who want to work as health coaches, life coaches or functional nutrition professionals. It sells certification programs and shorter specialization courses, mostly self-paced with live elements, to career changers, aspiring coaches and working professionals adding a coaching skill. The about page says HCI was founded in 2015 to address shortcomings its founders saw in existing health coaching programs, added a Pathway Program for National Board Certification (NBC-HWC) in 2020, and had reached 35,000+ students in 100+ countries by the end of 2024. Students now reach their courses through what the site calls the secure ISSA Student Portal.
The certification programs
The home page groups its flagship certifications by outcome. Three are recommended on the site:
- Health and Life Coach (the Dual Health and Life Coach Certification) combines the Health Coach and Life Coach certifications. The home page lists it as online and self-paced at 3-5 hours a week, and says it can make a student a certified coach in as little as 5 months. Graduates receive two certificates. The FAQ says HCI was the first school to offer a dual certification in health and life coaching.
- Board-Ready Health and Life Coach pairs the Life Coach Certification with the Advanced Health Coach Certification. The home page lists it at 6 months and 7-9 hours a week, online with live classes, leading to eligibility for the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) exam.
- Functional Nutrition Professional (FNP) is a systems-based program on root causes and patterns across 7 body systems. It is designed for 6 months at 8-10 hours a week, and the FAQ says a full-time student putting in 20 hours a week can finish in as little as 3 months. Graduates receive the Certified Functional Nutrition Professional (CFNP) credential.
The component programs are also sold on their own. The Health Coach Certification is designed for 12 weeks at 3-5 hours a week, fully self-paced, with video lessons, interactive Q&A sessions, peer support and optional live coaching labs. Its modules run from an orientation through program structure, client-centered relationships, coaching foundations, intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy, and appreciative coaching, and the FAQ names motivational interviewing and appreciative inquiry as core tools. The Life Coach Certification has the same 12-week, 3-5 hour format, with seven modules covering behavior change psychology, trust, mastery skills, goal setting and accountability, purpose and career and leadership development. The Advanced Health Coach Certification runs 12 weeks at 7-9 hours a week, with required live sessions, coaching labs and 1:1 mentorship from board-certified instructors, and teaches HCI's signature well-being system, built on the 8 Dimensions of Wellness.
Specialization courses
Four shorter courses let a coach add a niche. The home page lists Menopause Coach at about 1.25 months, Business Growth Blueprint at 4 months and 4-6 hours a week, Stress & Resilience Coaching at 6 weeks, and GLP-1 Support Training at about 2 weeks. Business Growth Blueprint covers niche, lead generation, sales, marketing and client retention for coaches and functional nutrition professionals. Stress & Resilience teaches the physiology of the stress response with somatic and breathwork tools for individuals and groups. The GLP-1 course covers coaching clients through side effects and habit change while they take GLP-1 medications.
The Menopause Coaching course has the most detail. It contains 25 modules in five parts (foundations and hormonal health, pre-menopause, peri-menopause, post-menopause, and special considerations), and comes with a Menopause Wellness Guide, symptom trackers, hormone reference guides, red flag tools and nutrition quick guides for use with clients. Students have 8 months from purchase to finish, with extensions available, and earn a Menopause Coaching certificate and 14 CEUs. A background in coaching, nutrition or wellness is recommended but no specific certification is required. Instructors are Jenny Liebl, a trainer with more than 18 years of experience, and Brooke Jeffries.
Prices and payment
HCI publishes tuition for several programs. On both the Health Coach and Life Coach pages, a One Payment option is shown at $4,245 beside a higher figure of $7,950, with the line "Pay in full and save $500!" next to a figure of $4,745, and a Monthly option is shown at $395.42 a month beside $662. The Menopause Coaching course is listed at $799 against $999 as one payment, or 9 monthly payments of $99.88, and the page invites students to check whether they qualify for a scholarship. The site publishes no tuition for the FNP or the board-ready track; its FAQ says tuition varies by program and points to a Clarity Coach, a one-on-one advisor who helps a prospective student choose a program and payment plan.
According to the FAQ, all course materials and assessments needed for an HCI certification are included in tuition with no hidden fees, while third-party costs such as registering for the NBHWC board exam are separate. A refund policy applies to students who meet its eligibility criteria, with details in the enrollment agreement. Prospective students can also request 72-hour access to test-drive a program, download a course catalog, or join free live webinars such as a Lunch and Learn with the FNP instructors.
Guarantees
Two guarantees sit on top of the tuition. The Paying Client Guarantee covers the coaching certifications and the FNP: the FAQ says that a student who completes the program and follows HCI's process will land a first paying client or get a tuition refund. The Job Guarantee comes with the Advanced Health Coach Certification, alone or within the board-ready track. A graduate who completes the program, earns the certification, passes the NBHWC board exam and applies to at least three relevant employers within six months is promised a qualifying role, or a tuition refund.
Accreditation and credentials
The FAQ says the coaching certifications are recognized by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), with 38 CCE hours for the Health Coach Certification and 40 for the Life Coach Certification, which count toward renewing an ICF credential. It also says the programs are accredited by the Health Coach Alliance, making Health and Life Coach graduates eligible for its Registered Clinical Health Coach credential, and the home page adds FHT to the bodies behind its coaching paths. The Advanced Health Coach Certification is accredited by the NBHWC, and its graduates receive a letter confirming board exam eligibility. The FNP is accredited by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners, the American Association of National Wellness Practitioners and the American Association of Natural Wellness Coaches. Every graduate receives an HCI certificate and a digital badge for LinkedIn or a website.
Teaching and community
Instructors named on the program pages include Brooke Jeffries, MS, CN, NBC-HWC, lead instructor and program director of the Advanced Health Coach Certification; Laura DuBois, faculty lead for the advanced program and a former physical therapist; Jennifer McDonald, ScD, CHES, NBC-HWC; executive coach Alyssa Poggioli; and Priscilla Benavides, a life and health coach who is bilingual in English and Spanish. Graduates join the Heart Warriors Community, which the FAQ describes as a global network offering ongoing business guidance, business-building challenges and career support after graduation. The about page cites 850+ five-star reviews on Trustpilot and an A+ Better Business Bureau rating.
Who it suits
HCI suits a career changer who wants a recognized coaching credential with business support, and the dual program covers health and life coaching in one enrollment. A coach aiming for clinical, corporate wellness or digital health roles has a direct route through the NBHWC-accredited advanced track and its job guarantee. Nutrition-minded students who want deeper physiology can take the FNP, and working coaches can add menopause, stress or GLP-1 skills through the short courses without committing to another full certification. The main caveat is cost: the core certifications sit in the thousands of dollars, and the advanced track adds required live sessions and a separate board exam fee, so it asks more time and money than a short online course.
