What it is

The United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) is the learning institution of the UN system. Its home page calls it "the trusted learning partner of the United Nations system" and sums up its offer as "innovative, scalable, and cost-efficient learning solutions that support the future UN." Its main campus and headquarters are in Turin, Italy, with an office in Bonn, Germany, an office in Madrid and a virtual campus.

It serves two kinds of user, and the site's top menu splits them from the first click: "Individual Learning" and "Solutions for my organization". Individuals, such as UN staff and people working in sustainable development and international cooperation, find courses, programs and a free course catalog. UN entities and partners commission learning programs, advice and platforms for their own workforce. The home page puts the balance plainly: 92% of UNSSC work is tailored to organizations, it has served 117 UN agencies, and 97% of participants recommend its learning experiences.

One change is on the horizon. A news item dated 04 Sep 2026 reports that the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution endorsing the merger of UNSSC into UNITAR and establishing a new United Nations Institute for Capability and Learning Innovation. The site still presents the college, its courses and its services under the UNSSC name.

Five focus areas

The college organizes its work around five areas, which it describes as the UN's three pillars plus two functional areas that run across everything it does:

  • Peace and Security: strengthening analytical and operational capacities for more coherent, evidence-informed and people-centered approaches.
  • Human Rights: giving UN personnel and partners the knowledge, skills and tools to turn shared principles into practical action at country level.
  • Sustainable Development: building the conditions for coherent, collaborative action across mandates and geographies, so Member States can keep their commitments.
  • Leadership and Management: building a cohesive, adaptive leadership culture across the UN system.
  • Change and Transformation: helping people, teams and organizations lead transformation and adapt to change.

Courses and programs for individuals

Courses are found through a course finder and an explore-by-theme view. The upcoming courses on the home page show the format and the languages: an online introductory guide to Youth, Peace and Security for implementation at national level, with editions titled in Georgian, Arabic, French and Portuguese, each running online until 31 Dec 2026. The same theme runs through the blog, where a recent post introduces a Youth, Peace and Security lexicon.

The flagship program is Roots to Results, a leadership and management pathway for UN leaders that the college says was "co-created with entities from across the UN system". It is modular and runs in four stages, from Ignite to Inspire, to develop leaders at every career stage. The site also features a learner story about a UNICEF representative who sharpened her political acumen and foresight to put children's rights on the agenda in the Republic of Congo.

For self-study, The Blue Line is "a unique learning hub open to all UN staff for personalized and self-directed learning", which the site calls a global learning hub designed by the UN, for the UN.

The "Free Course Catalogue 2025/2026", published as a PDF on 11 Sep 2025, is the entry point for learners outside a commissioned program. The college describes it as offering "a diverse range of online learning opportunities designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of individuals working in sustainable development and international cooperation", with courses on "key topics such as peacebuilding, climate action, and human rights" where "participants can gain valuable insights from experts in the field."

Training can also be followed on a phone. The My UNSSC mobile app, available from Google Play and the Apple Store, lets learners "Access your training programme on the go."

Services for organizations

For UN entities, the college describes a range "from strategic advisory and HR solutions to evidence-based instructional design", grouped into four services:

  • Learning and Training: capacity-building programs that support the change Member States seek.
  • Custom programs for organizations: services the site sums up as "Built for the UN. Designed for Impact."
  • Digital Learning: learning technologies and platforms that make learning available to the entire UN workforce, which the college says reduces duplication and maximizes cost-efficiency for the system.
  • Academic Partnerships: links with academic institutions that feed new knowledge into its courses.

The client stories show what that looks like. The chief of the business support section at the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund writes that the fund invested in change management capacity through UNSSC-provided training, manager support and a network of volunteer Culture Champions, "driving staff overall agreement rates up from 57% to 83%", and that in 2025 UNSSC adapted its work to a more tailored survey the fund requested. A manager of learning and development at UN Women describes the Learning Managers' Forum as a network for the UN learning community for over 25 years. A Junior Professional Officer writes that the JPO orientation program gave participants a clearer view of the UN mission and the tools to handle the challenges ahead.

Face-to-face events complement the online work. The events list shows a face-to-face exchange for HR practitioners in Nairobi on 13 and 14 October 2026, on supporting organizations through change.

Beyond the courses

The college publishes a podcast, "Climate, Crisis and Courage", with stories on how climate stress disrupts livelihoods, fuels tension or drives migration, and how communities adapt and build peace; episode 5, from August 2026, covers climate, governance and security in West Africa. The blog covers subjects such as how UNSSC helps UN country teams deliver on the 2030 Agenda. The site also lists its leadership team, board of governors, faculty and speakers, donors, commercial opportunities, FAQs and a newsletter.

Who it suits

UNSSC suits UN staff who want structured learning tied to their work, from leadership development through Roots to Results to self-directed study on The Blue Line, and HR and learning teams in UN entities that want a learning partner designed around the UN system. Its language editions, such as the Youth, Peace and Security guide in Georgian, Arabic, French and Portuguese, help reach country-level staff and partners.

For people outside the UN, the free course catalog is the clearest door in, aimed at anyone working in sustainable development and international cooperation. The college's offer is built first for the UN system, so most of its programs and services are framed around UN entities and their staff. Learners should also keep an eye on the planned merger with UNITAR, which the General Assembly has endorsed.
