What Skilljar by Gainsight is

Skilljar by Gainsight is an external LMS for customer education: a platform for software companies that train their customers and partners on the product they bought. Gainsight, which calls itself "The Customer Success Company," sells it alongside its customer success, community and in-app guidance products, and its product page sums up the idea in one line: "The faster customers learn, the longer they stay." The pitch is to "Help customers and partners get value faster, use more of what they bought, and get more out of it over time."

The product page frames the problem as the gap between a release and customer understanding: "You shipped it. Did they get it?" Gainsight's home page lists Skilljar under its product family with the line "Turn new customers into product experts with academies that scale," next to Gainsight CS, Gainsight CC (Customer Communities), Gainsight PX and Staircase AI.

Why customer education, in the company's words

Skilljar's FAQ makes the business case plainly. Customer education, it says, accelerates time-to-value by helping users understand and apply a product faster, and when customers complete structured onboarding, certifications and learning paths, "they adopt more features, require fewer support resources, and renew at higher rates." The same FAQ describes modern platforms like Skilljar as connecting learning data to the CRM, customer success tools and AI workflows so that training drives retention, adoption and revenue. On Gainsight's home page, learning is one stage of the customer journey it covers, between engagement and renewal, with the line "Close the gap between shipped and understood."

How it differs from an internal LMS

The product FAQ answers the question directly. Internal LMS platforms are built for employee training such as HR onboarding, compliance and internal upskilling, while Skilljar "is purpose-built for external education: training the customers and partners who use your product." In practice that means public-facing academies with branded experiences, self-service enrollment, ecommerce, SSO for end customers, and integrations with revenue tools like Salesforce and Gainsight CS.

Building the academy

Course creation. Teams build on-demand courses, VILT (virtual instructor-led training) sessions and learning paths, and customize the academy with their brand, SSO and AI-assisted content creation. The product page promises this "without the complexity," so the education team spends less time building and more time on outcomes.

Certifications. Learners earn LinkedIn-shareable certificates, and the page says Skilljar supports "industry-recognized credentials." Certification programs can use proctored exams, badges and re-certification flows, which the page says "boost learner pride and signal expertise to the market." That matters for vendors whose partners or power users must prove and renew product expertise, since a lapsed certification can be caught and renewed rather than quietly expiring.

Commerce. Training can be sold, not only given away. The commerce engine supports subscriptions, a-la-carte purchases and training credits. A native Stripe integration handles payments, tax collection and 100+ currencies, and a Salesforce contract integration lets sales reps add training seats to any deal, so paid training can be bundled into a software contract.

AI features

Skilljar's FAQ says the company "is investing deeply in AI across every layer of the platform," and names four features:

  • AI Tutor, an agent embedded in the academy that "helps learners figure things out right where they're learning, then get on with it," giving personalized, context-aware guidance when a learner gets stuck mid-lesson.
  • Skilljar MCP Server, which lets the team "Build courses, enroll learners, organize your program, and handle everyday education work just by asking." The product page describes running the academy from the AI tools a team already uses, in natural language, to build courses, enroll learners, pull reports and manage the program end to end "without writing a single line of code," which it calls "education operations at the speed of conversation."
  • Course Ratings AI Summaries, which surface feedback trends from learner ratings.
  • AI Enrollment Insights, which help an education team understand and act on learner behavior patterns.

Customers can also connect their own AI through MCP so Skilljar works the way their team does.

Integrations and data

Skilljar's integration claim is broad: it "connects natively with Salesforce, Gainsight CS, Zoom, Webex, Zendesk, Marketo, and 80+ more tools." A real-time Data Connector pushes learning data to a company's BI stack, so the impact of education can be measured alongside retention, adoption and revenue metrics. The product page's line is "Your learning data, everywhere it needs to be."

The tightest pairing is with Gainsight's own products. With Gainsight CS, the page says, "Gainsight spots the adoption gap. Skilljar closes it with the right lesson, before it turns into a renewal risk." With Gainsight Customer Communities, a native integration joins the academy and the community into one destination, where learners can reach targeted courses inside the community "without switching tabs or logging in to a separate system." Anita Hæhre, Head of Community at one customer, says that after integrating Skilljar with Gainsight CC they surface targeted courses, certifications and onboarding paths directly in the community, and have seen "higher course enrollments, stronger community engagement, and more self-service case deflection."

Customer results

Two case studies carry figures. Jamf, which "supports over 76,000 customers," connected customer success and customer education using Gainsight CS and Skilljar, and the headline result is an "80% drop in support cases through Customer Education," along with faster onboarding and better retention. Handshake uses Gainsight CS and Skilljar together for onboarding, and the page reports "50% faster TTV for trained customers," with trained customers reaching value in half the time of untrained cohorts. Gainsight's home page also features a story on how Handshake scales customer education and digital success. An Academy Inspiration Database shows what other customers have built with Skilljar.

Pricing and getting started

The product page shows no prices. It offers a personalized demo and a product tour, and Gainsight's menu links to a separate pricing page. Gainsight also runs Gainsight University for training and certification on its own products, plus a customer community and API and developer documentation.

Who it suits

Skilljar by Gainsight fits a B2B software company that treats customer education as part of retention and revenue: a SaaS vendor building a branded customer academy, a company certifying partners with proctored exams and renewals, or an education team that wants to sell training seats through Salesforce deals and charge in many currencies through Stripe. Teams already on Gainsight CS or Gainsight Customer Communities get the most from it, since adoption signals, lessons and community content connect in one system, and the 80+ integrations cover companies on Salesforce, Zendesk, Marketo, Zoom or Webex.

The caveats are scope and cost visibility. Skilljar is built for external audiences, so a company that mainly needs compliance training for its own staff is outside its stated focus, and with no prices on the product page, budgeting starts with a demo conversation.
