Worldchefs Academy is the free online learning portal of the World Association of Chefs Societies (Worldchefs). It offers two courses, the Pre-Commis Chef Training Program and Sustainability Education for Culinary Professionals, both "completely free of charge," through a website and a mobile app that works offline. It is for people taking their first steps toward a kitchen career, for working cooks who want to review the basics against international standards, and for chefs who want to learn sustainable methods. The Academy's announcements describe it as a division of Worldchefs created to offer culinary education for aspiring chefs "that may not have the means, mobility or flexibility to attend full-time culinary school."
Who stands behind it
Worldchefs describes itself as "a dynamic global network with over 110 chef associations worldwide." The October 2024 announcement says the organization carries 96 years of history since its founding at the Sorbonne by Auguste Escoffier. The Academy's Pre-Commis Chef course and mobile app were developed in conjunction with NestléProfessional and the Pro Gastronomia Foundation. The sustainability course was built by members of the Worldchefs Feed the Planet team, with volunteers of Worldchefs and the Electrolux Food Foundation and the support of Custom Culinary, according to the Advisors page.
The homepage quotes the Worldchefs president on the purpose: "For us at WORLDCHEFS, it is important to give aspiring chefs the foundation for a proper learning system that is available to everyone all over the world."
The Pre-Commis Chef course
The Pre-Commis Chef course, also called the Culinary Foundations Course in later announcements, is the foundation level. The About page says it provides "the basics that set the standard for an entry level job in a professional kitchen." The curriculum covers the basics of culinary professionalism, food service operations, culinary theory, hygiene, sanitation, basic cooking and nutrition.
The format is simple. The homepage describes it as reading the lessons, watching the online training videos and/or reading the transcripts, and testing your knowledge as you go, then passing the final assessment. Learners work at their own pace, and the homepage says a learner who follows the program "could be ready for your first job." The course is marked as beginner level.
It can be taken as a complete curriculum, or used lesson by lesson. The language announcements say individual lessons can complement other courses and provide theoretical components toward culinary apprenticeship training, onboarding or culinary review, which makes it useful to a kitchen that trains its own staff as well as to an individual learner.
Languages
The Pre-Commis Chef course has grown one language at a time. The Mandarin version, announced in May 2022, was the 7th language, joining English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Italian and German; the course content was reviewed by a culinary team from Shanghai Disney Resort, and two of its members became Mandarin Advisors. The Hindi version, launched in October 2024, made it 8 languages. Worldchefs thanked Kamal Kant Pant and Manjit Gill, President of the Indian Federation of Culinary Associations, for their contributions to the Hindi translation and review, and Kamal Kant Pant joined as Hindi Advisor.
A group of Worldchefs Academy Language Advisors keeps developing and reviewing the course content "to ensure relevancy and international standards are maintained." The Sustainability Education course is available in English, with additional languages to follow, according to the About page.
The sustainability course
Sustainability Education for Culinary Professionals teaches chefs "how to think and act sustainably" over 8 lessons. The homepage says the lessons help students engage with key themes and learn how to inspire positive change "for both the planet and the bottom line." Its title addresses culinary professionals, though the course card marks it beginner level, and it ends with the same online assessment and certificate. A panel of Sustainability Education Course Advisors keeps the content current and globally relevant.
The app and offline study
Learners can study on the web platform or in the Worldchefs Academy mobile app, available on the App Store and Google Play. The app is the Academy's answer to poor connectivity: the homepage asks, "Struggle to access reliable internet connectivity?" and explains that the full course can be downloaded through the app, with all training resources and knowledge checks available offline. The learner connects to the internet only when ready to take the final assessment online. Sign-up works through a social media account or an email address.
Certificates
On passing the final online assessment, a learner receives a Worldchefs Academy certificate and badge. The About page calls this "an important first step for anyone looking to apply for employment in a professional kitchen," or for showing knowledge of sustainable methods. The 2024 announcement adds that the online training links to Worldchefs Certification opportunities, which the site lists alongside Seminars in its menu.
Partners and in-person plans
The Advisors page names Saudi Airlines Catering Company (SACC) as a partner and the first co-branded partner for the Culinary Foundations Certificate. It also states that in 2022 the Academy and SACC would establish the first onsite location facility in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The blog shows the wider organization's activity too: a Chefs Stand For Peace video launched at the Worldchefs Congress & Expo 2022 in Abu Dhabi, with SACC as Premier Sponsor.
Price and support
Both courses and their certificates are free. The site carries a Donate page for those who want to support the program. Questions go through an enquiry form, by phone or by Skype, and press and information requests to an info address at the Academy.
Who it suits
Worldchefs Academy suits someone who wants to start in a professional kitchen and needs the theory first: hygiene, sanitation, food service operations, basic cooking and nutrition, in their own language and at no cost. It fits learners who cannot attend a full-time culinary school, learners with unreliable internet, and employers or apprenticeship programs that want a free theory module for new staff. Working chefs can use the sustainability course to rethink how their kitchen runs.
The courses teach theory. The About page says a learner finishes having learned the theory required for the online assessment, so the practical side of cooking still comes from a kitchen, an apprenticeship or a school. The catalog is also small, two courses, so the Academy is a starting point and a refresher rather than a full culinary program.
