Wine Scholar Guild

Tap a star to rate

Wine Scholar Guild (WSG) is a wine education organization that runs certification programs focused on specific wine regions, with online study, live courses, in-person classes through course providers, educational wine tours and a paid member community. It is for wine lovers who want structured study and for people in the trade who want a credential in the wines of France, Italy, Spain or Germany. The homepage describes the aim as helping people "build a deeper connection with wine and become a more active, thoughtful taster." It counts 13000 graduates, 150 expert educators and 130 course providers.

The certification programs

The core product is a ladder of regional certifications. The homepage calls it "three distinct levels of study" for the wines of France, Italy, Spain and Germany:

  • Essentials: French Wine Essentials, Italian Wine Essentials and Spanish Wine Essentials.
  • Wine Scholar®: French Wine Scholar, Italian Wine Scholar, Spanish Wine Scholar and German Wine Scholar.
  • Masters: Bourgogne Masters, Champagne Masters and Bordeaux Masters, all in France.

So France runs the full three levels, Italy and Spain offer Essentials and Scholar, and Germany offers the Scholar level. Beside the regional ladder sit two tasting credentials, the WSG Tasting Certificate and the WSG Tasting Diploma, and specialty certifications: CSWS® (Certified Sherry Wine Specialist) and Valpolicella Explorer. A student quoted on the homepage, Rana Masri, says the French Wine Scholar program stood out for "its updated, comprehensive information and deep dive into the history and culture of French wine."

WSG also offers an Exams FAQ, a "Find Your Educational Path" guide for choosing a starting level, Corporate and Group Training for teams, and scholarships, with past winners listed on the site.

Online study

The online study page says "All of our certification programs are available via online learning" and pitches it to busy professionals who want to follow a detailed course of study at their own pace, at home, at the office or while traveling. WSG uses its own online course interface, which it calls user-friendly, and gives students direct access to wine instructors through an active Q&A forum. A roadmap charts the curriculum.

The study package for an online course includes:

  • a comprehensive study guide in print and e-book versions;
  • interactive online study modules;
  • professional educator support via the Q&A forum;
  • a suggested schedule of study with learning objectives for each chapter;
  • online quizzes for self-evaluation;
  • downloadable maps of all wine regions;
  • access to a global community of fellow classmates;
  • a list of recommended wines to sample alone or in a tasting group hosted by students in the online program;
  • an online-proctored exam.

The exam rule is precise: candidates have one year from the registration date to take the final exam, and must contact the WSG office one month in advance to schedule it. For a learner treating this as test prep, that sets the pace. The work can be spread out, but the year is the limit.

Live courses and independent study

Learners can start at any time in the independent study format, or join a scheduled live course. The site's "Starting Soon" list shows upcoming dates: Spanish Wine Scholar on September 30, 2026, French Wine Scholar on October 4, 2026, the Certified Sherry Wine Specialist on October 12, 2026, Bourgogne Masters on October 27, 2026, Bordeaux Masters on October 29, 2026, Champagne Masters on November 3, 2026, Italian Wine Scholar Unit 1 and Unit 2 on January 12 and January 14, 2027, and Valpolicella Explorer on March 8 and 15, 2027. German Wine Scholar is marked "start today." The menu also points to independent study versions of the French, Italian and Spanish Wine Essentials.

For classroom study, WSG works with course providers. The site has a list of upcoming in-person classes, a course provider directory and Course Provider Awards.

Wine tours and Masters immersions

WSG runs travel programs, which its homepage calls "industry-recognized wine tours and immersion programs" guided by "leading wine authorities and journalists." The Educational Wine Tours take a small group to regions including Bourgogne, Piemonte and Mosel, plus nine other locations, combining vineyard visits, privileged winery access and regional cuisine "without the pressure of exams." The Masters Program Immersion is the study-focused version, with focused seminars, expert-led tastings and field exploration, "Ideal for students pursuing advanced knowledge or preparing to begin a region specific Masters certification." The two listed immersions are Bourgogne Masters in Beaune and Champagne Masters in Reims. Private wine tours appear in the menu as well.

Faculty and community

The homepage names its expert educators and contributors: Andrew Jefford, Essi Avellan MW, Pascaline Lepeltier MOF, Jasper Morris MW, Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon, Dr. Cornelis (Kees) Van Leeuwen, Jane Anson, Peter Liem and Steve Charters MW. Several contributors are quoted on the site; Andrew Jefford praises "the commitment and enthusiasm of the students, the reach of WSG and the informality and open-mindedness which is such a key part of its corporate culture."

WSG Membership is the community product, introduced with "No AI. No algorithms. No ads." and "Just real people, real conversations and real wine." Members get expert-led deep dives into wine regions and a discussion board with other wine enthusiasts around the world. On the homepage, Mário Márcio Lescano Júnior says WSG Membership "cultivates a rare scholarly culture where passion and intellectual rigor meet."

There is a fair amount of free material too: free sample chapters of the French, Italian, Spanish and German Wine Scholar study guides, wine maps, vintage charts, free online events, a blog, the WSG Wine Game and a trial of a Producer Guide covering 500+ wine producers.

Price

The homepage and the online study page publish no course, tour or membership prices; learners choose a certification and book it from that program's page.

Who it suits

Wine Scholar Guild fits a learner who wants depth on one country or one region rather than a general wine survey, and who is happy to study toward an exam. A sommelier or retailer wanting a regional credential, an enthusiast working through French, Italian or Spanish wine in order, and someone preparing for a Masters level in Bourgogne, Champagne or Bordeaux all have a clear path. The online format and the one-year exam window suit people with jobs; the in-person classes and the immersion trips suit those who learn better at a table or in a vineyard. A company or group can look at the Corporate and Group Training option.

It suits less well a learner who wants a broad, world-wide introduction to wine, since the ladder is built around France, Italy, Spain and Germany. Someone who only wants to drink better without exams can still start with the membership, the free chapters or an educational wine tour.
