What VDCI is
VDCI, the Virtual Design & Construction Institute, is an online school that teaches the software and skills used in architecture, construction, interior design and graphic design. It is aimed at learners: career changers, working designers updating their skills, and employees whose company pays for training. Its homepage sums up the offer as "Nationally Accredited. 100% Online. Live Expert Support. Software Included." The site says VDCI is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET), which it describes as recognized by the United States Department of Education, and that it is an Autodesk Authorized Training Center and Autodesk Academic Partner. The contact block gives an address in San Diego, California.
The catalog runs from AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, SketchUp, SOLIDWORKS and Fusion through blueprint reading, construction management and estimating, to interior design, graphic design and AI. Training comes as single courses, as certification courses that bundle an official exam and software, and as certificate programs that add job support and need an application.
Graphic design
The Graphic Design Certification Course is the main creative program. It runs 132 clock hours, starts anytime, and is split into five units: an Adobe Photoshop course (retouching, color correction, selections, layer masks, Camera Raw and mockups), an Adobe InDesign course (page layout, styles, master pages and print output), an Adobe Illustrator course (the Pen tool, patterns, packaging graphics and logos), a Graphic Design Portfolio course covering composition, typography, color theory and grids, and a 12-hour AI for Graphic Design unit using tools such as Adobe Firefly, Midjourney and ChatGPT. Projects include typesetting a 90-page book, a magazine spread, a restaurant menu, a travel brochure, a two-sided business card, repeating patterns and product mockups, and finished work goes into an Adobe Portfolio site.
The program includes 100 training videos, 4 months of access to Adobe Creative Cloud, proprietary workbooks, and eight live 1-on-1 mentoring sessions for portfolio reviews, difficult concepts, resumes, LinkedIn profiles and job applications. The exams section lists three optional Adobe Certified Professional exams, in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, with proctoring included. Learners who want only one tool can take the Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign course alone (30 hours and $975 each), or the 36-hour Photoshop Certification Course at $1,999, which adds tutoring and prepares for the Adobe exam.
Interior design
Intro to Interior Design is a 60-hour beginner course at $579, with 25 training videos covering design elements and principles, the fundamentals of the profession (project phases, anthropometrics, the parties involved), presentation techniques and material boards, universal design and ADA, furniture and elevation plans, and sustainability. Projects include a digital material board and an artist's lounge or gallery, and the course lists 6 CEUs. The FAQ estimates about 6 weeks at roughly 10 hours a week. Instructors include Rebecca Lockwood, who holds a BFA in interior design and is an educator member of the American Society of Interior Designers, Richard Hess, with over 23 years in architecture, interior and furniture design, and Derek McFarland, an architectural designer. Students who want to go further can move into longer programs at $2,999 each: Interior Design Professional (390 hours), Residential Interior Design Foundations (278 hours) or Commercial Interior Design (440 hours), with Revit, Twinmotion, SketchUp and Photoshop. A Residential Interior Design Certificate (420 hours) costs $3,999.
Certification exam prep
Much of the catalog prepares for vendor exams, which is why VDCI also belongs among test prep and certification providers. The AutoCAD Certification Course (140 hours) prepares for Autodesk CAD certification; the Revit Certification Course (150 hours) for the Autodesk Certified User exam in Revit; Revit MEP and Revit Structure (150 hours each) for the Autodesk Certified Professional exams in mechanical and structural design; and AutoCAD & Civil 3D (150 hours) for the Civil 3D exam, with the voucher included. SOLIDWORKS CSWA (60 hours) prepares for the Associate exam, Fusion (60 hours) for the Autodesk Certified User exam, Construction Estimating (80 hours) for the Bluebeam Certified Professional exam, and Construction Management (180 hours) includes the Procore Student Certification and Bluebeam exams. Longer certificate programs, such as CAD (280 hours), BIM (290 hours) and CAD/BIM (400 hours), add 1-on-1 mentoring.
How study works
Courses are self-paced, with 24/7 access to videos and projects during an access window that starts when the learner activates it: 150 days for the graphic design certificate, 30 days for Intro to Interior Design. Learners can request one seven-day extension, and others are decided case by case. Videos are not downloadable. Each course assigns an industry expert as instructor who answers messages and grades projects, quizzes reinforce each lesson, and there are online discussion forums. Many courses include live 1-on-1 bonus training, one session in the case of Intro to Interior Design. Completion earns a verified digital certificate that can be downloaded and shared on LinkedIn. Reviews on the interior design page praise the speed of grading; one student writes that the instructor "was very on top of replying to messages and grading assignments in a quick and timely manner."
The graphic design certificate offers career help through its mentoring sessions and job placement assistance, but the FAQ is explicit that VDCI does not reach out to companies on a student's behalf, and the page adds that it does not guarantee any job.
Tuition, financing and refunds
Prices are listed per course, and the FAQs say there are no extra fees or taxes. The Graphic Design Certification Course costs $2,995 (listed as $4,915 before discounts). It can be paid in installments with no interest: a $975 deposit at checkout, then 3 installments charged every 30 days or before the next class. A 12-month 0% financing plan through Climb Credit takes a $500 deposit and then $207.92 a month, subject to approval. Companies can enroll staff by corporate invoice, and VDCI provides documentation for employer tuition reimbursement. Intro to Interior Design does not qualify for payment plans or financing. For that course, the refund policy is a 90% refund (the payment less a nonrefundable 10% registration fee) within 30 days of purchase, provided the course materials have not been accessed. Support runs by phone, email and live chat on weekdays from 9am to 6pm Eastern.
Who it suits
VDCI suits adults who want a structured, instructor-backed route into a design job or a software credential: a marketer or small business owner who wants to produce professional graphics, a returning designer rebuilding a portfolio, someone exploring interior design before committing to a longer program, or a drafter preparing for an Autodesk exam. The accreditation, the CEUs on some courses and the employer-invoice option make it a fit for professional development paid by an employer.
The access windows are fixed, so a learner with little spare time should plan the start date carefully, and some single courses, Intro to Interior Design among them, must be paid in full before the class starts. Learners who want live weekly classes will find the teaching self-paced, with instructor help on demand rather than a timetable.
