What it is

Reed Courses is the course marketplace inside Reed.co.uk, a UK recruitment site whose homepage calls itself "the UK's #1 job site" and lists 96,384 jobs. The courses section sits next to Jobs and Career advice in the main menu and works as a shop window for training providers: a learner searches one catalog, compares courses from different providers, saves or compares them, puts them in a basket and pays through Reed. The headline figures on the courses page are "30,753 courses in 1,011 subjects", "Thousands of satisfied customers" and "Rated 4.2 stars on average".

Most of the catalog is run by outside providers whose names appear on every course card: IOMH, Training Edge, Royal Open College, NextGen Learning, The Learning College Group, Keep Britain Working, Small Business Charter, Career Smarter, Avado and Business Consort, among others. Reed also lists its own material under Reed Courses and Reed Business School, and a Provider profiles section lets a learner look at who is behind a course before buying.

The catalog

The "What do you want to learn?" grid splits the catalog into 16 subject groups: Health, Safety & Care; Business, Management & Legal; Construction & Engineering; Accounting & Finance; HR, Sales & Marketing; Software & Web Development; IT & Analytics; Project Management; Teaching & Childcare; Academic & Personal Development; Operations & Purchasing; Secretarial, PA & Office Skills; Media, Arts & Creative Skills; Hospitality, Travel & Tourism; Sports, Fitness & Animal Care; and Fashion & Beauty.

Under those groups the course types get specific. Health and care runs from first aid at work, mental health, counseling, dental nurse and pharmacy technician courses to IOSH and NEBOSH health and safety. Construction covers bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, electrician, gas, welding, asbestos awareness and quantity surveying. Finance includes AAT, ACCA, bookkeeping, payroll, CeMAP and Sage 50. The IT groups list coding, Python, Java, JavaScript, PHP, SQL, software testing and web development next to CompTIA A+, CCNA, IT security, data analysis and Microsoft Access. Project management has Agile, APM, ITIL, PMP, PRINCE2 and Six Sigma at green and black belt. Teaching and childcare covers CACHE, early years, SEN teaching assistant, PTLLS, CTLLS, ESOL and TEFL, and the academic group adds GCSE, A level, functional English and maths, sign language and Spanish and French. Beyond the career subjects there are hobby and lifestyle courses such as cake decorating, beekeeping, dog grooming, yoga and nail technician training.

What a course card tells you

Each card shows the course title, the provider, how many students have taken it or how many enquiries it has had, the delivery mode, the length and pace, and the price with any saving. The "Popular with other students" row gives a feel for the range:

  • Help to Grow: Management Essentials, from Small Business Charter, online, 2 hours, self-paced, free.
  • Job interview masterclass: How to get the job you want (Free Webinar), from Keep Britain Working, 25,074 students, 1 hour, free.
  • CV Writing Masterclass, from Reed Courses, 28,326 students, 1.1 hours, free.
  • Teaching Assistant Level 1, 2 & 3 + Early Years, SEN, Primary Teaching & Child Care, from Training Edge, 13.3 hours, £15 against £100 (save 85%).
  • Microsoft Office Skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint), from NextGen Learning, 11,288 students, 33.5 hours, £15 against £22.
  • Level 3 Certificate in Health and Social Care + Care Certificate Standards, offered separately by Royal Open College (17.2 hours, £15 against £19.50) and IOMH (16.1 hours, £15 against £28).
  • CACHE Level 3 Teaching Assistant & SEN Certificate, from The Learning College Group, 120 hours, £296 against £499 (save 40%).

Longer qualifications sit in a section headed "Accelerate your career with a certification". The CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice appears twice: from Reed Business School at £1,319 over 12 months, self-paced, and from Avado at £1,467 against £2,095, part-time over 8 months. PRINCE2 Foundation with the exam included, from Career Smarter, is £545 against £695 for 25 hours. Functional Skills English Level 2 and Functional Skills Maths Level 2, from The Learning College Group, are £292 each, 60 hours of tuition plus the exam. The CIM Diploma in Professional & Digital Marketing L6 from Business Consort is "Enquire for pricing".

Nearly every card on the page is online and self-paced. The Avado CIPD course is the exception shown as part-time.

Certificates and qualifications

What a learner receives depends on the course and its awarding body, not on Reed. The menu has a "Certifications & accreditations" section with CPD certified courses, AAT courses and CIPD courses, and the footer links an awarding body directory, a university directory and a "Qualifications explained" page. Course titles name the qualification and level where there is one (CACHE Level 3, CIPD Level 3, Functional Skills English Level 2, CIM L6), which makes it easier to tell a regulated qualification from a short skills course.

Paying, funding and extras

The courses page offers installment payments at 0% APR and says learners can "Spread the cost over 3, 6, 9 or 12 months" on courses that support it. The finance notice on the page names Zopa Bank Limited trading as DivideBuy, authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. A "Courses with added extras" block adds three filters: Finance available, for courses payable by installments; Job guarantee, described as "courses which place you in work upon completion of the course"; and Funding available, for "government funding, bursaries, grants and more."

The footer links discount codes, gift vouchers and 0% finance pages, plus Courses Help, a Courses contact page and the On Demand Terms that govern self-paced purchases. Gift vouchers are pitched at "anyone looking to treat their friends, family or colleagues to a brand new learning opportunity."

For course providers

Providers list through "Advertise a course", and the pitch on the courses page is to "Reach over 10 million potential students." That reach comes from Reed's job site: the jobs homepage promotes courses to jobseekers with "Your next skill, from just £15" and a row of popular courses next to the vacancy search. The site does not state on these pages what Reed charges providers to list or sell.

Who it suits

Reed Courses fits UK learners who want to compare many providers' versions of the same qualification in one place, especially jobseekers already using Reed for vacancies. The free webinars and masterclasses on interviews, CVs and AI in job hunting are a low-risk start, and the £15 skills courses cost little. Career changers aiming at teaching assistant, care, HR, accounting or project management roles will find recognized qualification names, side-by-side prices and 0% APR installments for the larger ones. Small business owners can pick up short management or Microsoft Office courses at modest cost.

The marketplace format has a trade-off. Because the same qualification is sold by several providers at different prices and hours, a learner has to compare the provider, the awarding body and the terms course by course rather than relying on Reed as the teacher. Prices are in sterling and the catalog is built around UK qualifications, so it is most useful to someone studying for the UK job market.
